The Djerdap National Park is situated in the South – East of Europe, in theNorth – East of Serbia, along the international border with Romania.The total surface of the National Park is 63.608 ha.

The park stretches along the right bank of Danube for about 100 km, fromGolubac to Karatas near Kladovo, covering a narrow strip of forest hills, which is about 2-8 km wide, in altitude range from 50 to 800 meters.

The part of the river Danube which belongs to Serbia accounts for about 9%of surface of the Djerdap National Park, i.e. 5500 ha. Therefore, the Djerdap National Park is also a river park.

The Danube passes through three canyon-gorge valleys (Golubacka – 14.5 kmlong and 230 m wide at the narrowest point, Gospodjin Vir – 15 long and 220 mwide at the narrowest point, and the Canyon of Veliki Kazan and Mali Kazan 19 km long, and 150 m wide at the narrowest point, and three open valleys –Ljupkovska, Donjomilanovacka and Orsavska. Canyon valleys are cut into thelimestone of the southern Carpathian Mountains.

The Djerdap National Park is divided into zones with three levels of protection.Type of protection regime for each zone is determined on the basis of the purposeand function of that particular zone:

1. The first level of protection requires strict protection of exceptional natural and cultural values. In the zones with the first level of protection all protectivemeasures, scientific research, educational activities and public presentation arecarried out under special regime.

2. The second level of protection is reserved for protection of the areas surrounding the zones which have been placed under protection of the first level, protection of especially valuable natural systems (characteristic ecosystems, landscapes and the other natural assets etc…

3. The third level of protection is applied in those areas of the National Park which outside the first and the second level of protection. Activities pertaining for tourism, sport, recreation, forestry, water supply, exploitation of mineral raw materials etc…

There are more then 1100 plant species in Djerdap area, and especially significantamong these are Tertiary relict species, ancient species which have survived sincethe glacial period: Corylus colurna L., Celtis australiis L., Juglans regia L., Ilex aquifolium L., Staphylea pinnata L., Daphe laureola L., Acer intermedium L.,Ruscus hypoglossum L., Syringa vulgaris L., Taxus bacatta …

The most important characteristic of vegetation in the Djerdap National Park is the fact that in many cases developmental vegetation series have been preservedfrom polydominant types of forests and their variations, through impoverishedrelict communities to present – day. The six developmental vegetation phasesthat are present in Djerdap cannot be found in any other refugium in Balkan.

Flora and vegetation of Djerdap make the central component of biodiversity inthis area, and one of greatest natural values of the Djerdap National Park.

With great natural potentials and cultural-historic heritage, Djerdap is a place interesting for numerous people different structure, age and education. With all this potentials, Djerdap National Park can develop strong tourist offer in way of eco-tourism development and natural and cultural resources protection.
