The Dave Matthews Band began in 1990 in Virginia as a jam band and quickly became one of the most successful funk rock bands in the United States. Its music sells millions of albums and continues to sell out the largest arenas worldwide. Despite taking its first break during the summer of 2011 in almost 20 years, the band continues to release live albums to keep in touch with its fan base. The album, including tracks like “Good Good Time” and “Last Stop,” will be released this April 12.

ATMOSPHERE THE FAMILY SIGNRHYMESAYERS/WARNER RECORDS, APRIL 122

After releasing a series of EPs, “The Family Sign” will be Atmosphere’s first full-length album in three years. Known as one of the longest-running independent hip-hop groups, Atmosphere has one of the most respected repertoires in the alternative hip-hop industry. The group’s lyrics and music play off clever allegories and metaphors for life, making the music great for all hip-hop lovers.

GORILLAZ THE FALLEMI RECORDS, APRIL 194

Though the digital version of the Gorillaz new album has already been released, the actual physical version hits stores this April 19. Maintaining their grasp on the alternative-electronica genre, the Gorillaz recorded the whole album on an iPad while on the North American leg of their tour. The album contains few featured guests and has been explained by the group as an “experimental pet project.” Despite the differences, the Gorillaz maintain their alternative and always amazing approach to music.

MICHAEL JACKSON: THE EXPERIENCEUBISOFT, APRIL 125

Finally, the chance to emulate the King of Pop becomes a reality with “Michael Jackson: The Experience” for Kinect and PS3 Move. While the PS3 version is similar to the previously released title for Wii, the Kinect version of the game brings it to a whole new level. With complete body tracking and the inclusion of feet and legs into the dance, this completely changes the choreography and the involvement into the game. With 30 playable songs in all, this game will keep you dancing all night long.

MORTAL KOMBATNETHERREALM STUDIOS/WB GAMES, APRIL 197

The original ultraviolent blood fest “Mortal Kombat” is back and more brutal than ever. In the newest iteration of the series, the developers have decided to retell the classic story from the original “Mortal Kombat” (1992), but with a few surprise twists, which we will not give away. Using the Unreal Engine 3, this is easily the most beautiful “Mortal Kombat” game ever seen and is sure to please all blood thirsty fans of the genre.

FOO FIGHTERS WASTING LIGHTRCA RECORDS, APRIL 12

These Seattle natives began in 1994 with a self-titled debut album and immediately shot to the top. With six studio albums, a handful of sold out tours and hit singles under their belt, the Foo Fighters are back with their first album since 2007. The band filmed the recording of the entire album in order to make a documentary to go along with their seventh album. The first single “Rope” was officially released on March 1 and gives us just a taste of what’s in store.

6Will we finally get to have cake? Taking place several years after the end of “Portal” and “Half Life 2,” you find yourself stuck in Aperture Science Labs. Overrun with plant life and vegetation, your main goal is to escape using wormhole-like portals. Like the first “Portal” title, this installment offers a full single player story line, with the addition of a much anticipated co-op multiplayer mode, where you can play side by side or join up with your buddies online.

COUNTRY STRONGAPRIL 12Gwyneth Paltrow, made famous by her award-winning performance in “Shake-speare in Love” in 1998 is making a comeback. Be it her guest appearance on “Glee” or her Grammy performance of “Forget You” with Cee-Lo Green, it is undeniable that she’s on her way back into the spotlight. Paltrow stars as a struggling country singer dealing with an alcohol problem, a floundering career and a pushy manager/husband. Her performance along with the film’s Oscar-nominated original soundtrack makes for one of the best mainstream musical movies this year.

LITTLE FOCKERSAPRIL 5The third film in the multi-million dol-lar franchise features the same all star line-up: Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Barbara Streisand and Dustin Hoffman with the introduction of some little ones into the plot. As usual, we watch Jack (DeNiro) and Greg (Stiller) go at it in at-tempt to outsmart and outdo one another. This one also features new characters played by Jessica Alba and Kevin Hart. With some great one-liners and hilari-ous physical comedy, this one will make everyone laugh.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRISAPRIL 5“I Love You Phillip Morris” stars Jim Car-rey and Ewan McGregor as the two quirky main characters of this heart-warming comedic work of art. Though the film received limited distribution in the U.S., the reviews were phenomenal, claiming the film to be one of Carrey’s best perfor-mances of his career. The film, based on a true story, tells of the life of an ex-convict and conman Steven Jay Russell, a fugitive who leads a normal life until he falls in love with fellow inmate (McGregor) and be-comes determined to break out of prison to build a life for the two of them.

TRON: LEGACYAPRIL 5

After almost 30 years, the much-antic-ipated sequel to the 1982 “Tron” was released this year to a cult-like audience. The film picks up 20 years later with the main character, Kevin Flynn’s (Jeff Bridg-es) son, Sam, as the heir to his mysterious legacy. Sam picks up where his dad left off and attempts to destroy the very computer program that caused his mysterious disap-pearance years before. With a complete soundtrack by Daft Punk and some of the best graphics yet, “Tron: Legacy” is a must see.

SOMEWHEREAPRIL 19The first film from award-winning director Sofia Coppola in more than four years, “Somewhere” has received rave reviews and even more awards. The film tells the story of a newly famous, over-privileged actor (Stephen Dorff) who decides to spend time recovering from an injury at the world famous Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. While Dorff explores his newfound celebrity, his 11-year-old daughter appears and forces him to grow up and face his responsibilities.

THE KING’S SPEECHAPRIL 19Nominated for more than 20 awards and winner of four Academy Awards, “The King’s Speech” swept the award shows this year and proved to be one of the best films of the year. Based on the true story of Prince Albert, Duke of York, the film tells the story of the stuttering prince and his resulting discomfort in public appear-ances. Convinced by his wife to work with Australian speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush), the two form an unlikely friend-ship that helps the prince overcome his lifetime of struggles.

This. Movie. Looks. Epic. It’s part “Lord of the Rings,” part “The Princess Bride” and part “Pineapple Express.”

Although “Your Highness” is set in medieval times, the characters use today’s colorful language and it couldn’t be more funny. In the film, Franco and McBride are brothers/princes that are dissimilar in almost everyway. Fabious (Franco) is the daring, rugged and courageous man in the royal family, while Thadeous (McBride) is the lazy, scared, idiotic brother. Their life seems to be going perfect until the evil wizard Leezar kidnaps Fabious’ fiance (Deschanel) and the princes must go on a quest to bring her back. Along the way, they meet Isabel (Portman), a strong-willed young woman who is out to kill Leezar herself. There are dragons and castles and mythical beasts-a-plenty in this flick and they all seem to be done with a tongue-in-cheek feel to them. Also, Natalie Portman wears a metal thong that would make Princess Leia jealous.

Now what’s got me so pumped is A) Danny McBride is in it and B) the chemistry the two main actors have on screen together

is perfect. These guys feed off of each other like crazy. If you haven’t seen “Pineapple Express,” you need to go and check it out. It is done by the same director and has Franco and McBride in it. If you don’t know the name Danny McBride yet, you should be ashamed of yourself. He is definitely one of the funniest actors in movies today. You might know him from “Tropic Thunder,” where he played the crazy special effects technician, but his most amazing role was as the main character from a little television show called “Eastbound & Down,” where he played a has-been major league baseball player named Kenny Powers. Epic show. Absolutely epic.

I have a feeling this movie is going to be a huge hit with people who like crude humor, blatant drug references, cussing and boobies. I mean, the trailer made me LOL on more than one occasion all 38 times I have watched it. Just go check it out and if it seems like it’s up your alley, then give these people your money. You’ll be happy you did.

YOUR HIGHNESS 4/8/11 Directed By - David Gordon Green Starring - Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel

This one should be interesting. The guy that directed the sci-fi masterpiece “Moon” is taking his turn at an action thriller.

Gyllenhaal’s character finds himself in the body of someone else as a government mission to try to find a terrorist who is going to bomb a commuter train, but everytime he fails, he has to go back and start all over. Sounds interesting.

Gyllenhaal is a very strong actor (minus “Prince of Persia” of course) and I think he will fair well as this kind of character. Should be a good time.

I stopped caring about these movie be-fore the second one came out. I don’t know what Wes is doing, but hopefully this doesn’t ruin his credibility.

Apparently, this outing is all based around the new rules of movies and how they have all changed since the first three. Stuff like virgins can die and movie studios will apparently throw money at a long dead franchise.

What’s my favorite scary movie, you ask. I would definitely have to go with “Gi-gli.” That movie scared the hell out of me. Something, I’m sure, this movie will fail to deliver.

SCREAM 4 4/15/11 Directed By - Wes CravenStarring - Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette

Hmmm. I don’t know how I feel about this one. I don’t really care for either of the main actors, but the story seems intriguing. It takes place in the 1930s and is set in a traveling circus. Pat-tinson’s character is the circus vet who starts falling for the circus owners woman (Witherspoon) and things start getting out of hand from then on.

Like I said, I’m not a fan of either of them, but who knows, it could be really good. But if it’s not, Pattinson should just stick to his music career (No, seriously. He’s a great musician.)

Every month, I have the honor of sharing my dining experiences at some of the best restaurants in our fair city and beyond. In December of 2009, Mistral Kitchen opened its doors and we were quick to include them in our Restaurant Issue a few months later as one of the newest top spots to frequent. Since then, I’ve been back for post-dinner cocktails and for full-on meals, each time experiencing a new taste or flavor (even a new seat with different sights and sounds) that brings me back for more. Unable to stay away for too long, I also couldn’t keep myself away from wanting to paint a bigger picture this time around for anyone still unfamiliar with the experience that is Mistral Kitchen.

Prior to becoming a Seattle sensation, Executive Chef and Owner William Belickis spent time working in the New York kitchen of his mentor David Bouley. He worked in the revered flagship restaurant, Bouley, before making his move to the Pacific Northwest. After continuing to polish his culinary skills in Seattle, Belickis eventually opened his first restaurant, Mistral, a 40-seat establishment

in Belltown. For eight years, Belickis strutted his stuff at Mistral, garnering a devoted following and receiving the highest Zagat food rating in the Northwest for five of those eight years.

In 2008, Mistral closed its doors making way for Belickis to lay the groundwork for his next project. Within two years, Belickis went from the 40-seater Mistral to South Lake Union’s Mistral Kitchen, a 5,000-square-foot restaurant housing four different kitchens (traditional, rustic, technical and pastry) and multiple dining areas to accommodate a variety of occasions and everyday non-occasions.

Equipped with an army of staff with the same dedication to food and customers as Belickis, a few of which came from the original Mistral, Mistral Kitchen has all the elements needed for a thoroughly joyful eating and drinking experience.

Upon entering, patrons walk through a steel corridor where seasonal fruit and other aromatics line the walkway, capturing one’s senses and beginning the culinary journey immediately.

18 The word “anniversary” was first used for Catholic feasts to commemorate saints.

The something-for-any-occasion establishment offers a main dining area that is simple and modern while still being warm. A wall of windows floods light and downtown street liveliness into the space during the day and moonlit cityscape by night. A bar area has views of the rustic kitchen with its wood-fired oven.

For a fancier evening, The Jewel Box dining room pays homage to the original Mistral. Plush carpeting and elegant décor make for a more leisurely drawn-out meal where diners can choose from a tasting menu of four courses ($60/$120 with wine pairings) or eight courses ($90/$190).

On my latest visit, however, I briefly sat down for a quick chat with Chef Belickis in the private Bijou room that can accommodate up to 12 guests and can be configured various ways, before settling at a seat at the bar.

Citrus marinated octopus ($13) glistened of extra virgin olive oil and blood orange reduction, with sprigs of baby cilantro, frisée, thinly sliced radish and cucumbers and micro watercress. Every forkful was a bright bite of fresh ingredients and carefully chosen flavors.

Big Eye Tuna crudo ($15) united parsley juice, beet puree, discs of watermelon radishes, grapefruit pieces and micro watercress. Each guilt-free component had the freshness of a same-day harvest, as it culminated in a blast of goodness.

A happy hour favorite for many, the pork belly burgers ($12 lunch/$5 happy hour) were a nice balance of sweet and salty, with the juicy pork belly, fresh pineapple slice, pickled shallots, curry vinaigrette and cilantro on a lightly toasted, pillowy hum bao bun.

The Maine diver’s scallop ($12) was absolutely immaculate. I’ve personally made it a rule to never go without ordering the always impeccably prepared, glossy, golden and caramelized scallop at Mistral Kitchen. This time around the delicate and impressively large shellfish were bathed in a white wine broth with tiny rounds of carrots and small leaves of spinach foraged from the Cascades floating about.

Mountain Vodka

•1 oz St-Germain

COPPER MOONHousemade spiked

cherries make for a lively garnish for this spirit-

forward cocktail. Makes 1 cocktail

•2 oz Moon

Mountain Vodka

•1/2 oz sweet

red vermouth

•1/4 - 1/2 oz smaretto

•Garnish: Three spiked

cherries on a pick.

Drop the strawberries into a cocktail shaker. Muddle to release juices. Measure in the Moon Mountain Vodka and St-Germain. Fill with ice. Cap and shake vigorously. Strain cocktail into a martini glass. Garnish with half a strawberry on a pick.

Note: You can double strain the cocktail through a fine strainer for a clearer cocktail.

The tropical baba ($9), a rum-soaked cake, was a vision of dazzling deliciousness. Each bite of the moist cake was joined by fresh cut pineapple, micro-cilantro and coconut sorbet, encrusted by a globe of tiny, cylinder-shaped lime meringue pieces that had an irresistible pop to them, “like lucky charms for grownups,” described our server.

Beyond the fine fare at Mistral Kitchen, however, the cocktails, champagne and wine list are second to none. General Manager Patrick Hymer is an ace at assisting in choosing between the 12 red, white and sparkling wines by the glass or the more than 200 bottle selections available from throughout the old and new world. Not to mention his perfection at the art of sabrage, where his technique has been tested many a time, as he’s opened champagne bottles with a saber for guests on plenty of occasions.

Meanwhile, Bar Manager Andrew Bohrer is a connoisseur at concocting the most exquisite and unique of drinks by combining his creativity and knowledge about classic technique and forgotten secrets of the bartending world.

Bohrer, an avid blogger, explained further through his Web site, that he “crafts classic drinks and builds tomorrow’s. […] What I focus on is how things were done best and finding the best way to do them now; without comprising quality or speed.”

Whether catching a glimpse of the staff fully engrossed in tasks or snagging a bar seat that provides the opportunity to chat with Chef Belickis while he works away in one of the open kitchens, the level of detail and fondness the Mistral Kitchen staff has for what it does and what it provides for customers is constantly visible. The careful selection of seasonal ingredients, the watchful attention to presentation, the enthusiasm when interacting with patrons, the fresh cooking and well-thought out tastes and textures that appear on each dish. It’s all there. So come for a snack, come for a drink or come for a celebratory dinner. But whatever you do, just come to Mistral Kitchen.

After feasting on some of the magnificent morsels from the bite menu from Le Gourmand next door, the Sambar cocktails are well worth

your time. Everyone at Sambar pitches in ideas for ingredients, from infused waters to the most special and new liquors, the people behind Sambar know what makes the best combinations. Each drink on the menu pushes the boundaries of a time-tested cocktail or invents something entirely new. But each cocktail is never exotic just for exotic’s sake. The best way I found to approach my new home was to leave my taste buds in the care of bartender Jay Kuehner. Using a tequila base for the best drinks, Kuehner created several cocktails that grew into a story of their own. Starting with a subtle kick, the tastes exploded on my palate until subsiding into the perfect aftertaste. Each sip furthered the feeling that I’d found my new home.

KOREAN FOODKorean flavors tend to be pungent, with a generous dose of garlic, ginger, sesame seed oil and chilies. Tofu, noodles and rice are staples of the cuisine as well. Vegetables are often pickled or served raw and you’re likely to find daikon, Napa cabbage, potatoes, cucumbers and seaweed. Here are a few traditional dishes you’re likely to come across in various forms as Korean food becomes more and more popular.

INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL YANG OF JOULE AND REVELThough the menu at Joule is eclectic and is as likely to offer cornbread as smoked tofu, Korean flavors play a central role. At chef/owners Seif Chirchi and Rachel Yang’s recently opened Fremont outpost, Revel, Korean influences are even more evident. Chef Yang, who is Korean and grew up with all the flavors now seen in her food, was kind enough to discuss the couple’s cuisine.

What are some of the dishes you serve that are most heavily influenced by Korean flavors?At Joule, we serve spicy beef soup and Joule BBQ plate which have a great combination of spicy and big hearty flavors. At Revel, most of the dumplings, pancakes and rice bowls are all very Korean dishes.

How long does it take your kimchi to ferment?We ferment our kimchi anywhere from three days to two weeks depending on what kind it is.

I’ve seen all sorts of things in the kimchi I’ve had at Joule, like kabocha and Asian pear. Does this mean kimchi doesn’t have to involve cabbage to ferment?Kimchi can be made with anything! It can be made with most vegetables and some fruits. You don’t want anything with too much sugar or water since that will spoil a little too fast.

How much kimchi do you regularly go through at your restaurants?At Revel, our most popular dish is the pork belly and kimchi pancake. We will easily go through two 50-pound cases of Napa cabbage.

Have you noticed an increase in Korean- influenced food in Seattle recently?Yes. Korean flavors have been sort of national phenomenon lately and Seattle is definitely getting its share. Just look at Marination Mobile selling their Korean tacos.

Where do you go in Seattle for some great Korean food?One of my favorite Korean dishes is Soondubu or soft tofu stew. I usually go up to H Mart in Lynnwood to do Korean grocery shopping and go to BCD Tofu House in the food court. Best food court meal you will ever have.

It’s been a slow infiltration of flavors so gradual that you may not have noticed it. It’s appeared in the form of Marination Mobile, Seattle’s award-winning Korean and Hawaiian food truck, which will soon have a restaurant in the Harvard Market. This trend of flavors can also be seen in the dishes at Joule, now a Wallingford staple, and at its new sister restaurant Revel. The most common face of this heightening wave of Korean influence in our town is kimchi. It seems to come in any form imaginable. It might be a component of a clam dish at Dahlia Lounge or on a plate of pork belly at Black Bottle. It could be a dash of kimchi sorbet on a raw oyster at Matt’s in the Market or breaded and deep-fried at Biwa in Portland.

Perhaps there’s no reason to be surprised by this outbreak of Korean food. Korean-American chef David Chang of Momofuku in New York City relies heavily upon Korean flavors and recipes in his influential and frequently imitated cooking. Kogi, the Los Angeles food truck with enough foresight - or luck - to put Korean ingredients into Latino tacos, has created a phenomenon out of that combination. And in Seattle, with an ever-growing Korean population, we have the well-loved staple Kimchi Bistro on Broadway as well as a multitude of authentic Korean restaurants in Lynnwood, Federal Way and Edmonds. If anything, the draw of Korean food is just starting to take hold and will likely continue to infiltrate our meals.

KIMCHIKorea’s best-known food, kimchi is eaten at nearly every meal. A vegetable, usually cabbage, is fermented in ginger, garlic, salt and chili pepper. The result is a spicy, addictive and very healthy dish.

KALBI Marinated and grilled beef or pork short ribs. At restaurants, kalbi may be grilled tableside and then served with a dipping sauce and a leafy vegetable to wrap the meat in.

BIBIMBAPA mixed rice bowl usually topped with sliced beef, a fried egg, chili pepper and a variety of sautéed vegetables.

PA JUN A savory pancake-like dish made with meat, kimchi, vegetables or seafood. It is held together with a batter of eggs, flour and green onions and is crispy on the outside with a chewy inside.

BULGOGIThin slices of beef marinat-ed with soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic, then grilled. It is usually wrapped in lettuce leaves or served with rice.

In true “Vegas Style” Munchbar had its grand opening on Jan. 28 and brought in some local and national celebrities including Seahawks members Lawyer Milloy and Matt McCoy, “The Bachelor” stars Molly and Jason Mesnick and “Extra TV” personality Mario Lopez. Since then the restaurant/nightclub has had such personalities as Sammi of Jersey Shore fame along with a multitude of Vegas quality DJ’s and hosts.

The main characteristic that sets Munchbar apart from other nightclubs is that it’s not considered a nightclub. First and foremost, the owners pride the new location on being an amazing restaurant. “It’s a cool, upbeat restaurant before it’s a nightclub,” said owner Shawn Olyaie. “Guests get to experience both in one night. They can watch their favorite sports game, eat good dinner prepared by a culinary chef and have a Vegas-style nightclub experience.” Basically, Munchbar has got it all.

Owners Robert Frey, Bart Mahoney and Olyaie sought to fill a void in Bellevue. Previously heading up some of the most popular nightclubs and restaurants Las Vegas has to offer, the gentlemen decided to give Bellevue a shot.

“This has been a two-year project,” Olyaie said. “The recession really hit us hard. After a lot of research, we found that the economy here is still strong. The Bellevue crowd is also knowledgeable about food, wine and fun, and we wanted to share our experiences and education of the culinary and nightclubs with them.”

A short ride across the 520 bridge hasn’t slowed down the Munchbar fans. “Our crowd is from all over,” explained Leilani Wong, marketing and special events coordinator for Munchbar. “People travel to come to Munchbar, from Vancouver to Seattle, it’s not just a Bellevue crowd.”

What’s a good reason for choosing this Eastside destination? Besides the excellent food and attractive wait staff, the covered walkway and free covered parking come to mind. There’s no waiting in the rain to get into Munchbar. So ladies, don’t even worry about your hair going flat and makeup running before you even step inside.

If you’re looking for a reason to hit the town, Munchbar has a handful of celebrations in April, including the MLB Opening Day on April 1 and Carmen Electra’s birthday party on April 23. You can also catch any UFC fight you wish and enjoy the ever-changing music from Las Vegas DJs every weekend.

And if you’re STILL not completely sold on the restaurant-turned-nightclub idea, check out the dueling piano bar, Piano Bash, which is connected to the main restaurant. Grab a late night bite to eat, get to know that cute guy or girl you spotted across the bar and enjoy an awesome atmosphere all without having to leave the building. Now that’s convenience!

When hearing about the most “effective, fastest, yet safest way to change your body,” one might immediately conjure an image of a diet pill promoted by the likes of one of the Kardashians or a member of “Jersey Shore.” However, in the case of the greater Seattle area as of late, this promise refers to a new workout craze recently introduced to both Seattle and Bellevue called the Pure Barre Technique.

“Pure Barre is a workout technique that fuses together elements of ballet conditioning, pilates and weight work into a 55 minute, intense session,” explained Seattle and Bellevue studio owner Sami Dinsmore Sweeney. Sweeney trained directly under founder and CEO Carrie Rezabek who began this fitness phenomenon, which is now sweeping the nation, with a very grassroots type of approach. She opened her first studio in 2001 in the basement of an office building in Birmingham, Mich. Sweeney did all of this without any initial clients, signage or even a bathroom. Now it has expanded to more than 50 studios across the country.

“Many of our clients use the term ‘addiction’ when describing how they feel about our technique,” Sweeney said. “It’s not uncommon to be waitlisted in any of our Seattle classes due to the mass amount of people who are addicted.” The popularity of this workout may be accounted for at least in part by the fact that virtually anyone - from the injury prone to the already fit - can benefit from it. “Due to the non-impact nature of our classes, we’ve found that all levels of physical ability can do Pure Barre,” Sweeney commented. “Pregnant women, overweight women, runners, men, dancers, swimmers and people of all ages fill up our classes. Our teachers are trained to work with students of all levels of fitness.” Just as there is a diverse group of people who

attend Pure Barre, the classes cover a variety of moves that change every session to avoid the “fitness plateau.” Typically the format remains the same for dependability. “We kick off each class with a total body, fast-paced warmup to elevate the heart rate, which we work to maintain for the remaining 45 minutes,” Sweeney described. “Our warmup is followed with intense arm work to target the upper body. Then we move into our notorious thigh section. At the ballet barre we perform small isometric movements set to fantastic music, taking our thighs all the way to fatigue. Each strengthening section is followed with deep stretching to lengthen out the muscle. Next, we isolate our seat muscles, working to create a strong, toned, lifted seat. Then, we move into our ab work, which is unlike any abdominal work you’ll do in any other class. Next we target the lower back, building strength and support for the lower back. Lastly, we end each 55-minute session with a deep stretching cool down.”

According to Sweeney, what sets Pure Barre apart from other exercise programs is that there is a non-impact element so there are no long-term negative effects from performing the workout. It also targets the entire body from head to toe. “We train our students to work each muscle group to fatigue,” she commented. “This forces the muscle fibers to rebuild and restrengthen, resulting in increased lean muscle mass.”

Because of the intensity and range of each class, every instructor involved with Pure Barre has extensive training and has experienced a positive personal effect from taking part in the workout. Katie Boulanger, a University of Washington graduate who majored in dance with a minor in education, has always had a passion for all for forms of dance as well

as working out. “I have been dancing since I was 4 years old,” she recalled. “I cheered in college at UW and I moved down to California last year to find fitness classes that were different than ones that I’ve taken previously. That’s where I found Pure Barre and became a teacher.” Essentially the instructors are all invested in helping the students succeed because they believe in the effectiveness of Pure Barre. “We are here as teachers to push you in class to challenge yourself more and more,” Boulanger added. “As long as you have the personal drive to push yourself in classes and get stronger, you’re a great fit [and] having personal goals and aspirations for fitness and health will help you succeed in class.”

According to Sweeney, the two studios here in the area have both experienced a great amount of success and popularity and the day-to-day to-do list is seemingly endless in order to keep the businesses up and running. “I believe ‘to know us is to love us’ and one of my primary roles as an owner is to make sure as many people know about our technique as possible,” Sweeney stated. “I’m an active member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, a Lululemon ambassador, involved with the Circle of Hope Guild, Girl Power Hour and many other organizations because I believe community involvement is necessary for the success of my studios.” She is the quintessential Northwest business owner.

Even with a full plate, Sweeney manages to run, hike and travel in her free time in order to keep balanced. Her advice in order to lead a healthy and active lifestyle is to simply find something that works for you. “The best exercise is the one you enjoy doing,” she said. So if you’re looking to go outside the box with a workout routine, Pure Barre is a trend that has potential to stick around and may be worth checking out.

Most of us, no matter how diligently skeptical or pragmatic, find ourselves drawn in by astrology to at least some degree. Human nature is one that searches for patterns, meaning that however literally I may reject the idea that the precise timing and placement in the cosmos of my birth will determine anything about me, I still from time to time find myself idly looking over lists of people born around the same time as though it can. For me, the list is certainly a mixed bag. It runs from one end of the spectrum with the simpering dowdiness of Prince Charles and aggressive paranoia of Joseph McCarthy straight into Mamie Eisenhower territory, takes a looping detour through Pablo Picasso and Grace Slick-type lunacy, and ends in the more saucy and complimentary range of Grace Kelly and Bo Derek. There is no obvious connection between any of these people, except for a rough seasonal birth correlation and the fact that history remembers them. But it nonetheless is tempting to look at such lists just to see what trends exist, if any, and try to interpret oneself in view of them.

And hey, if the Supreme Court decision last year in Citizens United decided that corporate entities are individuals in the eyes of the law, then who knows? Maybe horoscopes can apply to them, too. Therefore, in honor of DList’s own birthday, it may be worthwhile to examine a short list of other noteworthy and sometimes surprising anniversaries being celebrated this month, to see where we fit in. So, happy concurrent birthday to…

EDIBLE BOOK DAYBecause as Americans, we’re infinitely more interested in something if we

can eat it (and even more so if we can specifically wrap it in bacon), we should be especially taken by the new international holiday, Edible Book Day. In its sixth year of celebration, this unique festival combines sensory delights of every kind by encouraging book lovers to create edible masterpieces that incorporate text and imagery from their favorite literary works. Originally a high-brow, one-off event in Hamburg, Germany, the idea caught on internationally and do-it-yourself competitions celebrating its anniversary have spread across the globe, including Seattle.

Slated for April 2, this year’s event at the Good Shepherd Center promised to outdo previous years’ pun-tastic entries (such as “Life of Pi(e)” and “The Origin of Reeses”) by challenging local readers to deliciously reinterpret the classics. So if you ever found yourself thinking that “Moby-Dick” would have been a much less boring if it had contained fewer words and more cake, then this is the book club for you.

THE CROCODILE/THE COOLOUT

For those who are unfamiliar, The Coolout (now reborn as Coolout TV) is one of the nation’s longest-running hip-hop series, dedicated to documenting the depth and breadth of NW hip-hop. Completely independently produced and developed, the series aired on public access until 2007 when it moved to webisode form. Coolout TV’s YouTube channel offers archival footage of some of the region’s premier hip-hop stars in their lyrical infancy and the series as a whole has flown under the radar as one of the most dedicated elements of the NW music scene for decades.

Both celebrating their inceptions in April of 1991, Coolout and iconic indie venue The Crocodile are joining up for a 20th birthday celebration on April 2 hosted by Coolout founder Georgio Brown, DJ Roc’Phella and a series of surprise appearances by NW hip-hop notables. Seattle scenesters take note: skipping this epic anniversary of not one but two pillars of Pacific Northwest music may result in your hipster card being permanently revoked.

THE PEACE CORPSThough technically incorporated in March of 1961, this month the United

States Peace Corps is planning regional celebrations for its 50 years of helping volunteers shame the rest of us with their mind-blowing levels of do-gooding. April 3, the Portland State University Student Union will host presenters and recruiters from the Pacific Northwest offering insight into the experience and opportunities available through the Peace Corps. Especially in a job market like this, the event may be worth checking out. The subsidized globe-trotting, opportunity to make a legitimate difference and valuable resume padding the organization offers may prove more attractive than it did when you first got out of college. Plus, for some of us, the possibility of traveling to a magical land where no one has ever seen or heard of things like Charlie Sheen or “Jersey Shore” may be inspiration enough to drop everything and move to the African bush.

STARBUCKSStarbucks, coffee juggernaut and ambivalent symbol of scarily effective

business modeling, turns 40 this month. Rolling out a massive new book-driven PR campaign to combat the company’s image as a heartless corporate leviathan as well as a series of ridiculously delicious mini-desserts, Starbucks is weathering middle-age as successfully as Demi Moore. Though technically on the cusp (having opened March 30, 1971), we’re going to go ahead and selectively include this one. Because let’s be honest, astrology is not an exact science and we can do what we want.

BICYCLE DAYSome people are thinking this must be part of Earth Day and other people

(the kind who go to Burning Man or own at least one Pink Floyd shirt) are giggling. Bicycle Day, celebrated April 19, commemorates the fateful day in 1943 when Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann self-tested a hearty dose of a new research chemical he had just developed, LSD-25. After overestimating what would be an effective dose by about a factor of 10, Hofmann climbed on his bike to head home from the lab and pedaled off into what must have looked like a pulsing, colorful, multidimensional portal, but was actually history. Seattle, as the city of Jimi Hendrix and a beacon of long-term counterculture, owes a serious cultural debt to this (apparently incredibly ballsy) Swiss scientist who decided that testing on animals first is for pussies.

However, for complex moral and simple legal reasons, DList cannot formally condone any kind of literally appropriate celebration of this anniversary. This April kicks off the Seattle Center’s countdown to “The Next Fifty”celebration, an attempt to re-capture the hopeful futurism that marked the original World’s Fair. Most notable among the planned developments will be the installation by this time next year of an enormous Ferris wheel, not unlike the London Eye. And for those concerned about how the city plans to fund this in a year of massive budget shortfall, fear not. The Seattle Center promises that the Ferris wheel itself will come at “a minimal cost” and that the price of admission while help defray the cost of the rest of the celebration.

Though personally, I am slightly unnerved by considering just how one gets a gargantuan, custom-made Ferris wheel on the cheap. Super-sized carnival equipment, much like elective surgery and pre-market drug testing, don’t seem like things you want to cut corners on.

Splashed across the runways and fashion photo shoots, this season has proven to draw much influence from the style of the 1970s. Wide leg pants and big-rimmed hats have made a dramatic impact in the clothing realms, but in the hair and beauty world there’s a trend that represents this style with a new twist: feather extensions. In both subtle and eccentric bundles, feathers are a perfect way to change up your hairstyle for this spring and summer.

There’s a good chance many of you have already seen feather extensions, but I’m here to tell you just how awesome they actually are. My first feather extension experience happened at Allure Salon in Belltown with owner Amani Anderson. Anderson is extremely devoted to staying up to date with trends fresh off the runways. By attending hair and beauty shows in Los Angeles and New York City, she is the first to hear about new treatments and styles. Needless to say, Anderson was very excited to bring her new feather knowledge back to Seattle. This was a trend she knew would catch on. And so it has. I first saw feather extensions

on musicians and movie stars like Ke$ha and Jennifer Love Hewitt, and in multiple fashion blogs in the LA area. Now I’m seeing more and more in this city.

The actual process of inserting the feather extensions is extremely easy and fast (not to mention very affordable). Allure’s most common feather extensions come in a bundle of seven feathers, with a mixture of neutral and vibrant colors. The extensions are clamped on the bundle of hair with plastic that is not heat sensitive. The feathers themselves can be washed, brushed and styled with the hair. Once you have your feathers in, like regular extensions, the hair they’re attached to will grow out. This only gives opportunity to change up your feathers, whether it be moving their location in your hair or changing the feathers entirely. If you’re looking to move the original feathers, Allure Salon will re-insert them for free. Chances are you’re going to want some extra bundles or individual feathers to add to your already rock star-like appearance.

The Ballard neighborhood has recently been adorned and enriched with the installment of Ketch; an innovative, avant-garde clothing boutique. Ketch offers contemporary, high-end fashions that are a cross between LA casual and New York chic. Owner Stephanie Kaldestad strives to keep Ketch’s clothing selection versatile. “I want to offer a variety of premium denim brands, comfy-casual clothes and day-to-night apparel,” she explained. Ketch has a large assortment of high-quality denim, including J Brand, James Jeans, Seven Jeans, Citizens of Humanity and Joe’s Jeans. The store also features fresh fashion pieces from Nation, Joie, Wild Fox, Leifsdottir, 12th Street by Cynthia Vincent, Parker, Daftbird and House of Harlow. The wide array of chic apparel attracts shoppers of all ages. “Our demographic is all over the board,” Kaldestad stated. “I’ve had 18 year olds to 65 year olds shop here.”

Ketch’s nautical-themed interior pays homage to Kaldestad’s roots. Her family has been part of the fishing industry for years, which has instilled an adoration for all things aquatic. “Love my boats; love my Sperry’s,” she proclaimed. The design scheme was brought to life by Laura Zeck of Zinc Interior Concepts. Zeck salvaged discarded wood and barrels from Ballard’s ship yards, which lends an authentic, rustic maritime presence to the shop. Kaldestad described the décor as “maritime meets industrial-chic” and elaborated on the creative design. “It’s unique, not simply a posh boutique with chandeliers.”

From backless chiffon dresses to premium denim to basic luxury tees, there are a variety of fashions at Ketch that will enhance any wardrobe. Kaldestad carefully selects the brands and products she carries. “I envision how it looks on the body. There’s a lot to think about and take into account; colors, price, functionality. Most of my products are chosen on instinct. I know immediately if it’s a yes or no.” Kaldestad’s instincts seem to be spot on, as Ketch has come to be known as one of Seattle’s most original and notable boutiques.
