DLSL Soars beyond at 55:Foundation Week CelebrationHighlights

Looking into the future with endless possibilities, De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) soared beyond as it celebrated its 55th year through a week-long celebration on February 12-16, 2018.

Hosted by the Legions of St. Mutien Marie and St. Br. Benilde, this year’s celebration highlighted various activities encapsulating the institution’s strategic directions while at the same time engaging students’, Lasallian Partners’, and guests’ interests.

The Inspirationbehind the Theme

This year’s theme, “Soar Beyond”, was coined by Esethkiel Raven Cuevas, Grade 12 - HUMSS student, the winner of the theme and logo-making contest.

Cuevas reiterated on his inspiration behind his winning entry. “The tagline Driving What’s Next 2.0 is manifested through showing the next step to the future in the theme Soar Beyond. The 54th Foundation Week Celebration was built with the notion of driving what’s next by moving forward. Now that the forward route has been set into motion, one would ask, what’s next for De La Salle Lipa? If one can no longer stay at just moving forward, the next logical step is to soar beyond. Beyond the highways and roads that limit our movement to forward, backward, left and right. Soaring high into a future with endless possibilities.”

February 12, 2018 – The 55th Foundation Week Celebration commenced with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided by Lipa Archbishop Most Rev. Gilbert Garcera, D.D. This was followed by a soft opening program highlighted by students’ performances and the Grade 10 students’ bench cheer featuring synchronized school chants and a human formation showing “DLSL” and “55”.

Moreover, in commemoration of the institution’s 55th year of foundation, the Viridi Gallery was also put up. Mementos and photos were showcased to highlight the significant milestones throughout the years.

Soaring beyond Sports, Arts, and Culture

DLSL’s Foundation Week Celebration will not be complete without sports and cultural events. First is the Seminar-Workshop on “Eventology” and Working across Culture. Another is the annual Sayaw Filipinas, a collaboration of various dance troupes across the country.

An addition to the culture-related events this year, an exhibit of Taka (Paper Mache) Horse Collection was also conducted. This featured the works of Lasallian students as they created their own versions of paper mache horses for auction. This is not to mention an assortment of variety shows and performances by Vox Fusion, Salindayaw, Modern Dance Company, Musikalista, Voices, and other performers.

Invitational basketball games also transpired – with teams from DLSL, De La Salle Araneta University, La Salle Greenhills, and San Beda Rizal.

The Foundation Week Celebration, moreover, was a time for families. With this, just like the previous years, the Integrated School Dance Festival was held. Lasallians also spectated over the dragon dancers who carried with them various sections of the Chinese dragon as they roamed around the campus on February 16, Chinese New Year.

Academics and Research-Related Happenings

Integrated School and College students and partners showcased their specialties through a roster of activities. For one, the Institute of Culinary Arts had their fish and seafood Chinese Cuisine Free Demo. Meanwhile, the College of Information Technology and Engineering held its Tagisan ng ECEpan, an academic quiz competition for Electronics and Communications Engineering students. Another competition, this time, involving robotics was also held through the Tagisang Robotics Sumobot Competition. Junior High School and Senior High School students, on the other hand, presented their Community-Based Action Projects Addressing Strategically Themed Learning Objectives through Networked Environments (CAPSTONE) via an exhibit and a colloquium.

The Office of Research and Publications also launched the Batangas Studies Collection and Batangas Sustainable Development Research Program. Likewise, the Research Capability Workshop for academic service personnel was held. (See full article: “DLSL Launches Center for Batangas Studies”.)

Non-Academic Engagement with Students, Lasallian Partners, and Alumni

Students, Lasallian Partners, and alumni did get involved during the week-long celebration through various non-academic activities. On February 13, Red Cross Youth members and volunteers headed their Blood Drive for Humanity 9.2. Meanwhile, a Mental Health Awareness Seminar was also held.

On February 14, following the formal opening of the school fair, a motorcade joined by students, parents, and partners took place. Kids then flocked to the SENTRUM for the Children’s Show, while song and dance competitions also ensued.

Lasallian Partners, on the other hand, participated in the “Bring a Plant: Paint a Pot” competition sponsored by the DLSL Gardening Club. The Centen area was then filled out students and Lasallian Partners as they joined the Bingo Social. Later, a Valentine’s dinner was then held for DLSL’s outsourced personnel.

The 14th would not have been complete without Echoes 6, a concert with performances by guest artists, DJ Nix, Autotelic, Ben&Ben, and Spongecola.

On the 15th, the third installment of the Animo Night Sky then featured short films by DLSL’s Bachelor of Arts in Communication students and alumni as Lasallians watched under the moonlight.

The second day of the school fair was capped with “Doni Di Corde Verde: A Night of Classical Guitar Music by Iyo Enginco”, a concert by DLSL alumnus from HS Batch 2010 Aemilio Enginco, a multi-awarded classical guitarist.

On the third day, on the other hand, a Drone Race Exhibition and Games took place at the Oval, with professional and amateur drone enthusiasts from Batangas as participants. Moreover, DLSL’s High School Batch 1986 also initiated their very own Blood Letting activity.

Another activity, the Lipa Youth Assembly (LYA), this time headed by the Lasallian Jurists (with the leadership of Maria Rosario Ebreo), was held and was attended by youth leaders all over Lipa City. Talks and workshops on human rights, youth movement for the nation, Sustainable Development Goals, followed by breakout and planning sessions then occurred.

Stallion papier maches for a cause

105 students took part in the creation and designing of stallion papier-mâchés, an art-for-a-cause project launched at the College Learning Resource Center (CLRC) on February 14, 2018.

The said exhibition drew its meanings from the enduring symbols of Lasallian education landscapes – especially with the stallion’s characteristics: strength, vigor, and love of freedom. The horses’ bright and expressive colors depict every single Lasallian who was and is part of the institution, all collectively moving to what is next.

The creations are up for auction and on display at the CLRC.

Newest Attractionsand Activities

This year’s Foundation Week Celebration would not be complete without the latest additions to its attractions and activities. Techies, for one, engaged in the QR Hunt Game and Google Maps Hunt. Through the QR Hunt Game, contenders scanned various QR codes spread across campus, answered trivia questions, and raced along with other contestants to reach the final QR code and answer the most number of correct questions. Meanwhile, those who joined

the Google Maps Hunt also competed in locating various Lasallian landmarks through Google Maps.

eGamers likewise got involved in DOTA and LOL competitions, a three-day affair with elimination and championship rounds. Lasallians also marveled at the Tunnel of Lights, a first for DLSL as it showcased an “instagrammable” spot for students, partners, and guests.

Dazzling lights surrounded spectators visiting the Tunnel of Lights.

A different kind of search game ran with the Google Maps Hunt.
