With its more than 300 employees, AVL Schrick GmbH functions
as a high-tech supplier and key competency partner for the international automotive
industry. The company portfolio includes the development and manufacturing of
high-performance engine components, such as camshafts, crankshafts, cylinder
blocks and cylinder heads, as well as the design and production of complete
combustion engines for a diverse range of applications. Company references
include many well-known automotive manufacturers and customers from the
industry, as well as a number of racing teams, for example from Formula One,
German Touring Car or NASCAR racing. One of the factors for the success for the
company are clearly its innovative power and competency in engine technology,
with a soft spot for problem-solving, a high degree of reliability, flexibility and
especially adherence to delivery dates, and finally high product quality with regard
to dimensional accuracy, surface quality and purity of components.
Accordingly, the demands on chip removal production are high, the sector
in which AVL Schrick GmbH will manufacture anything that has been developed
internally or that is demanded externally from a customer. To meet these demands
in the precision manufacturing of crankshafts and long camshafts for high-per-
formance engines, the company acquired a GMX 400 linear turning / milling centre
from GILDEMEISTER last fall. It is already clear that the option for technology
integration has lead to time-savings of up to 40%, in comparison to sequential
manufacturing on several lathes and milling machines with the added benefit
of increased efficiency and minimised reject rates.

In June 2008, Franz Kessler GmbH celebrated a remarkable anniversary: 50 years
ago, Franz Kessler shipped the first main spindle motor to what was then the
Friedrich Deckel AG. This was the beginning of a very successful partnership between
DECKEL MAHO GILDEMEISTER and Franz Kessler – a win-win situation for
both companies.
A number of specific product developments deserve special mention here:
• 1993 marks the beginning of the age of directly driven motors spindles
• In 1999, the so-called company spindle was introduced, a product that set
the benchmark for the entire sector and which is still proving its quality
and reliability daily with more than 5,000 spindles sold overall
• In 2000, the first lathe motor spindle with a synchronous motor was delivered
to GILDEMEISTER GmbH. This product is being continually improved and
used, for example, in the new CTX alpha, beta and gamma machines
• Another milestone was reached in 2003, when Franz Kessler decided to
expand the product range of motor spindles to include all turning axes of the
machine tool. Here too, the first projects were developed in cooperation with
DECKEL MAHO. The DMC 75 / 105 V machines are equipped with rotary
tables as well as with complete swivel axes from Franz Kessler
• The most recent development at Franz Kessler is the entry into high-speed
spindle technology. For the HSC machines of the GILDEMEISTER Group,
a 42,000 rpm spindle was recently introduced, and a 60,000 rpm spindle is
currently being tested
In the interval in which these technological advances were made, Franz Kessler
has become the largest supplier of the GILDEMEISTER Group. The fact that
Franz Kessler recently earned the Supplier of the Year award for the third time
surely delights all 550 employees at the Bad Buchau location and the 70 em-
ployees at the subsidiary in Gamfior, Italy, and provides an additional incentive
to do everything possible in the future to expand this supply partnership for
the mutual benefit of both companies.

not at all the case, however: The average lot size usually does not exceed 50 – 100 units, while single-
digit lot sizes are the exception rather than the rule. This naturally requires production geared to
highly flexible chip removal, and here the company puts its trust in high-tech cooperation with DMG.

HEIDENHAIN controls are universal and yet simple to
operate. Their rapid and accurate path control ensures
high-quality surfaces and very short machining times,
even for complex workpieces.
DCM—the Dynamic Collision Monitoring feature of the
iTNC 530 protects the operator and the machine against
crash situations. A new feature: Now the fixtures can be
entered and graphically displayed.
AFC—the Adaptive Feed Control automatically adapts
the feed rate of the machine to the material removal rate.
Machine tools equipped with HEIDENHAIN
linear and angle encoders operate with greater
precision, reliability and efficiency. HEIDENHAIN
encoders provide measuring signals of high qual-
ity. This improves the quality of the manufactured
part surface, reduces vibration in the machine
frame, lessens auditory stress from velocity-
dependent motor noise and prevents additional
heat development in the motor. With its absolute
encoders for machine tools, HEIDENHAIN has set
new standards in terms of time and functionality,
and you produce accuracy from the very first part.
Mould making machining example
Mould and die making for milling is characterised
not only by high demands upon form accuracy,
it also makes high feed rates necessary in order
to shorten machining times. The first and last
milling paths must match in order not to lose the
time previously gained. The successful fulfillment
of changing manufacturing orders requires
machine tools with high thermal stability. Con-
sequently, feed axes must achieve the required
accuracy over the complete traverse range even
with strongly varying speeds and machining forces.
These targets can be met by using linear encoders
on machine tools.
The illustrated workpieces show the profile of the
Golden Gate Bridge. In order to visualise the linear
deviation resulting from thermal growth of the
recirculating ball screw, machining deliberately
began in the middle of the workpiece. Start and end
paths, therefore, lie side by side and clearly show the
thermal drift with an edge (see figure below, left).

exactly, you can also measure between working
