The First Quarter meeting in Grand Forks was a great suc-cess. We had 74 members in attendance. Thanks to Curt Sandberg, Tim Goetz, Jim Holter and all the Grand Forks club members for making this meeting a great success. Friday evening’s Bunco Blast was a fun Ice Breaker where everyone had a chance to meet folks and sharpen their dice throwing skills. We had a number of committee presentations on Saturday and I would like to thank all the presenters for informing the attendee’s on timely information about the variety of important topics for upcom-ing year.

THANKS to everyone that submitted articles for this newsletter. For those who wish to submit articles for future

issues, please email them to me at [email protected] by the 27th of each month. Thank you!

Susan Fix, one of our own, from New Ulm is our OI Vice President for the Great Plains Region. She was our guest and did a fantastic job motivating us to do better, take care of ourselves, and be more optimistic. Saturday evening we cheered on the North Dakota Fighting Hawks men’s hock-ey team win over the Bemidji State Beavers. We have a good start to the Optimist year. The T Shot on October 27th shows 35 ads and 63 deletes, for a net minus 28. While we are not in positive figures yet, I am optimistic that all of you will work very hard with Gita Hendricks, Growth Chair, this year and we will end the year as a distinguished district. Jim Meyers is the New Club Building Chair and reported that Terry and Jeri Gorman are also working on a club in Roseville a suburb of St Paul. Arnie Odefey is working on a club in Lakeville, MN. Ken Schulz is working on a club in Carrington, ND; The Rochester, MN club is working on a club in Northfield, MN. If you know anyone in these areas that you think would be interested in becom-ing an Optimist, please contact, Arnie, Ken, Jim or me. There will be a lot of activity in the next few months for your clubs to get kids involved in the Essay, Oratorical and CCDHH contests. With the amount of scholarship money available to the kids, it is imperative that all students in the DMM District have the opportunity to participate. If your club is unable to give the students in your area this opportunity, please contact a neighboring club or the chair for the contest to enable these students to compete for a scholarship. The District Scholarships Chairpersons are; Jeri Gorman for the Essay, Ginny Bisek for the CCDHH and Dave Nichols for the Oratorical. I hope all of my Canadian friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving in October and all of my US friends have a wonderful Thanksgiving in November. Remember, also, our veterans and people currently in the military on November 11th. We owe them all our gratitude for their sacrifices that keep us safe. A reminder for all US citizens to Vote on Tuesday, November 8th, as every votes counts.

from club bulletins

PRIOR LAKE SAVAGE — has an “Attendee of the Year” award which was won by Kristi Erickson for attending 23 of 24 General Meetings in 2015-16. The club recently expended $7,400 in sup-port of seven organizations / pro-jects. They have welcomed three new members to their club al-ready this year and are working hard on building a club in Lake-ville. Their annual Garage Mahal is coming November 19th. SOUTH WINNIPEG — is selling Grey Cup ticket books as a fund-raiser and has 100 mitts ready to give to Frontenac School even before their Mitt Making Bee. SIOUX VALLEY — held their ‘year in review,’ awards, and in-stallation event in early October. WEST ST PAUL — held their “Talk ’N Tacos” event with city political candidates on October 5. RICHFIELD — gathered at Arnie Odefey’s in early October to var-nish the wooden toys the club gives away at Breakfast with San-ta. Arnie supplied the varnish, brushes, rags, coffee and donuts — members provided the man-power. They are sponsoring a pasta feed on Nov 8, Election Night in the USA, as a fundraiser while folks gather to watch the returns come in. They also raise funds via a ‘can trailer’ that they take to various sites encouraging folks to contribute their cans for recycling. LUVERNE — sponsored a five course dinner with wine pairings as a fundraiser on October 21.

Optimist Means . . . This time I will tell you about com-ing events for the coming months. Chili will be served in November at a local church. Salvation Army bell ringing is starting after Thanksgiv-ing. All may volunteer, so what are you waiting for? Optimist means more. It means giving. It means a way of life. To serve, to give, to be honest to one's shelf. To believe in what we are saying. At Richfield Schools the staff is trying to show the students how to live with an Optimist state of mind. To be thankful is a part of Optimist way of life. Also on the other side, to be honest and to say what to you, is wrong and to be so strong that you will have a part in fixing it. Find a way every day. Mary Christenson Richfield Sec/Treas

Dallas Brass visits Rapid City

Thursday night, October 27th was incredible! 100+ students from Central, Douglas, St. Thomas More and Ste-vens High Schools joined the Dallas Brass for an outstanding performance. You just had to be there. Following their participation in a clinic with the 'Brass', the students rehearsed the "American Tableau", a medley of patriotic songs dating back to Civil War days. The clinic and the subsequent concert was sponsored in total by the Morn-ing, Noon and Rushmore clubs in Rapid City. What an AWESOME performance by the Rapid City students! Don Stover, Past Governor

Don’t Drop Until You Add 2015-2016 Results Unfortunately, there were only 14 clubs that qualified - Seven Oaks, Jamestown, Fargo, Grand Forks, Wahpeton, Black Hills Noon, Brandon Valley, Yankton, Sioux Valley, Worthington, Central Minnesota, Eden Prairie, Rochester and St. Paul. And the cash prize winners — determined by random drawing — were: $250 / Brandon Valley; $150 / Yankton; $100 / Jamestown These monetary awards are to be used for a new or expanded youth pro-ject. Once used, clubs need to notify 2015-2016 Growth Chair, Dave Mar-tin, how the funds were used. He will then report back to the DMM at the 3rd Qtr Conference in St Cloud next April. Dave Martin [email protected] 605-951-6543

NORTHWEST SUBURBAN — is searching for a new location to meet and possibly a new locatin for their annual GALA, OR...a to-tally different club fundraiser. Meanwhile, they are gearing up for their annual nut sales effort. AND...they are exploring using DirectMail.com to recruit new members. DEVILS LAKE — is using a Mem-ber Interest Finder to determine club member’s priorities to be in-volved in club activities, is brain-storming for events that they can do during the upcoming Christmas season involving youth, and think-ing they might sponsor a golf tour-nament next summer as their ’signature’ fundraiser. BROOKINGS — listed their club’s contributions to ~28 different pro-jects / charities during the past year totaling nearly $50,000! That’s truly bringing out the best in youth, our community and our-selves. Please be sure your club’s news-

letter, whether distributed monthly,

weekly, or as needed, is sent to

[email protected] for pos-

sible inclusion in the monthly “Club

Answer of the month: If there were four doors it would be a chicken sedan!

Growth / Membership’s

2016-2017 Don’t Drop Until You Add The same program will be used again this year as we did for the past 2: 1. The 1st Quarter Grace Period allows clubs to clear rosters of necessary drops. The beautiful Fall season is so appropriate for our clubs to “clean up” our roster of those “wilted” members in the 1st quarter. 2. Starting January 1, 2017, drops cannot exceed adds in any month through September - be ready for NEW GROWTH. 3. At year’s end, the club must have at least a +3 over the October 1 start date. Don’t forget to replenish those that are being dropped during 1st quarter! In our first month of the year, we have dropped 78 “wilted” mem-bers – 26 of those were from the Bennie-Johnnie College Club. The good news is they have already added 22 new members to keep that club alive and energetic. 4. Any month in which drops exceeds adds after January 1, eliminates the club from the year-end monetary awards drawing. How many Kids will YOU reach? Gita Hendricks – DMM Growth Chair Together We Can!
