Industrial lubrication ... the old way.

Traditionally, transport chains of filling lines are lubricated with water and soap, or other additives of various kinds. This leads to a series of related problems including:

• Bacterial growth in wet conditions. • Technical problems between foam and sensors. • Health & Safety risks due to wet floors. • Extensive use of water.

In recent years other types of lubrication have been introduced. The simplest method - adopted by most manufacturers of lubricants - is the use of water-based compounds that are added with small percentages of other substances - such as silicone, etc - to allow sliding. This type of lubrication is called ‘semi-dry’ because the customer is not required to add water, which is already present in the compound.

Our system can save millions of litres of water. This reduces costs and meets environmental goals.

The new way. 100% DN-Dry lubrication.

Ours is the only package that guarantees the total absence of water, both as a product added by the customer and as a component of the lubricant itself. With this solution the customer changes from a ‘flowing’ lubrication (where water runs away) to ‘static’ lubrication. This is because PTFE adheres to the surface of the chain and remains in place.

PTFE is a solid, inert material, which does not react chemically with anything that is not a component of PTFE itself. As an industrial lubricant, PTFE can only be removed by using specific products, or by abrasion of the type which may occur on filling lines. This is why we have developed an automatic lubrication system which can maintain a constant layer of lubricant.

Wet cleaning can be a bacterial hygiene risk. DN-Dry eliminates water from the production line.

Benefits of DN-Dry PTFE lubrication.

In the case of PTFE lubricants, their properties allow the particles to adhere to the surface of the chain by electrostatic polarity difference. This means that they cannot overlap because they repel each other, and therefore this results in minimum quantities of lubricant being required as only some particles are removed during the slide of the transported bottles, cans etc.

There are numerous benefits to our PTFE solution:

• Environmental. Lubrication totally without use of water.

• Quality. Our lubricant is clean, odorless and colorless.

• Safety. Lubricant registered in class H1 by NSF for use in the food environment.

• Health. Does not promote mold growth or bacteria proliferation.

• Economy. Very low quantities of lubricant are used.

• Process benefit. No generation of foam so drip-trays can be removed.

• Protection. Protects against oxidation and corrosion, prolonging equipment life.

• Noise reduction. Substantial reduction of motor energy absorption.

• Friction reduction. Drastic reduction of friction and greater stability of the transported bottles, cans, etc.

• Cleaning. Basic broom sweeping to be done as required.

Suitable for all types of chain.

Given the need to periodically apply only a very small amount of lubricant, DN-Dry install automatic systems that, by exploiting the physical characteristics of the lubricant, can optimize the use of the PTFE-based lubricant. Therefore, although our product has a higher unit cost than soap and water, it becomes economic when you factor in the direct and indirect benefits.

The DN-Dry lubrication solution is particularly effective when used with plastic chains.

With stainless- steel chains it is effective as well, but being a static lubricant it enhances the typical problems of dirt accumulation.

When used for glass bottling lines, particles of graphite residues from the thermo-formation process of the bottles fall onto the chain due to vibrations. This requires periodical cleaning of the chains. depending on the use of the lines - as required.

A special cleaning process is, upon request, provided by DN-Dry for all stainless-steel chains.

Control panel and pump.

The use of a product composed of a liquid and a solid part requires special attention in the automatic management of lubrication. This requirement is met by the use of components whose technology was developed by DN-Dry.

Please note that each single chain is to be considered as one lubrication point. In the case of multiple chains, each chain is also counted individually as one lubrication point.

The customer is asked to only install all electrical cables in the position indicated at the control panel. DN-Dry then handles the entire installation process.

Dry lubrication in action.

Lubrication is done in a cyclical manner, with the distribution on the chains of a fixed amount of lubricant at specified intervals. This allows customers to pre-determine the product consumption, and allows reduced consumption by regulating the cycle pause time, depending on the verified response of the line in terms of performance.

The lubrication of several sections is sequential except if one (or more) of the sections of the line is not in use and has therefore not obtained a ‘signal of authorization’ to lubricate. In this case the system proceeds to the next section authorized to lubricate. The fine-tuning of the cycle time can easily be managed by authorized personnel to use as little lubricant as possible.

Micro application of lubricant is hygienic and clean. Water can harbor bacteria, but PTFE is odorless and safe.

Page 17: DN-Dry PTFE Industrial Lubrication

Distribution of the lubricant.

The distribution of the lubricant is carried out on each of the chains that compose the conveyor belts (1 chain = 1 lube point). Distribution is regulated by mechanical dispensers that deliver a fixed quantity of lubricant at 15 bar opening pressure. The pressure switch is adjusted at 20 bar. This guarantees that all valves will open and dispense the lubricant. At the end of each cycle the pressure quickly falls down to ambient levels.

In the past, the standard way to distribute the lubricant onto the chain was by use of brushes and nozzles.

Our solution of distributing the lubricant onto the chains is performed by lubrication ‘slide units’. This is a plastic material rail-slide exploiting the special characteristics of the lubricant: The necessary lubricant amount is deposited onto the surface of the slide. The slide is mounted at the bottom of the conveyor belt and causes the PTFE particles to adhere by electrostatic adhesion. These units are used for the lubrication of both single and multiple chains.

In exceptional circumstances, more lubricant can be applied by the use of a nozzle jet, delivering, for example, 1 cubic centimetre of lubricant.

Variable lubrication.

The surface lubricity of the chains and the consequent reduction of friction, however, can sometimes be counterproductive. This is the case with ramps where you need to have friction on the climbs so that containers do not stop half way or topple.

For this reason the surface of the chains or ramps with slopes greater than 1-2% are not lubricated directly. Just the chain guides are lubricated.
