SMART DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE AUTOMATION & REMOTE OPERATIONS

Developments in ICT will have a dramatic effect on the shipping industry

- Worldwide coverage satellite communication network and maritime mesh communication networks

- Internet of Things – all types of devices connected

- Software algorithms to handle “Big Data” enable faster and more informed decisions

- Bitchain technology to allow authentication and verification

- Real-time condition monitoring and remote operations through smart sensor networks

Impact of improved communication

1865: first successful Trans-Atlantic

communication cable

– 8 words per minute

– $10 per word ($134 in current value)

Today’s capacities:

– Trans-Atlantic cable (TAT-14): 3200 Gbit/s

– Largest satellite: 140 Gbit/s

6

Improved coverage and bandwidth

– Exponential growth

– Higher throughput per satellite

Impacts:

– Improved supply chain efficiency

– Optimized fuel consumption

– Remote monitoring and control

Projected maritime VSAT network capacity

Example 2: modernising physical inspections – «semiautomateddigitization»

DNV GL has cooperated with DLR (the German aeronautics and space

research centre) to develop a stereo camera system called IRIS

(“InnenRaum-InspektionsSystem”).

The goal is to achieve an automatic photo localization while being inside

a ship or a ship structure (where GPS does not work), and auto-populate

our “digital twin” with inspection data.
