Very common in plants (leaves/stem) and bacteria, not so common in animals(cuts, scrapes, etc)

Sexual Reproduction Creation of new organism from two parents Because organism is getting its genes from two parents, the genes are not the same. Very common in plants and animals

Asexual or sexual?

Asexual or sexual?

Question!!!

What would we look like if we were reproduced asexually? CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING!Which statement is FALSE about sexual reproduction?1. One cell arises from another cell. 2. A cell receives its genes from two parents. 3. A cell receives its genes from one parent. 4. 1 and 3 are both FALSE. What is cell division?

What is cell division? Cell division is the separation of one cell into two. Also called fission.

Why?There are three purposes to cell division.

CD is GRREAT!!!1. GrowthOrganisms start out as a single cell that divides to become a larger organism.

Cells do not get bigger in order to make an organism get bigger; they divide.Example: Sea UrchinSea Urchin EmbryoAdult Sea Urchin:

2. ReproductionWhen cells divide, they form two new cells. This is the way that some organisms (unicellular) reproduce.Example: E. Coli

3. RepairCells can divide in order to repair tissue or other parts of an organism that are broken.Example: A starfish can regenerate (regrow) an arm.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING!Which statement is FALSE about cell division?1. Cell division results in two cells from one cell.2. DNA is copied after cells divide 3. Multi-celled organisms use cell division to grow. 4. One-celled organisms use cell division to reproduce. How do organisms use cell division? One-celled organisms:Use cell division for asexual reproductionMulti-celled organisms:Use cell division for growth, cell replacement, repairExit ticket What are the two types of cell division?A. One-celled, multi-celledB. One-celled, unicellularC. Multi-celled prokaryoticD. Unicellular eukaryoticAnother word for cellular division is:A. FusionB. Fission C. FutureD. FitnessSome organisms are able to reproduce ___________, meaning that they get the EXACT SAME genes from their parent. A. SexuallyB. Fissionly C. AsexuallyD. Both sexually and asexuallyWhat are the three purposes for cell division?True or false: Cells do not get bigger in order to make an organism get bigger; they divide.
