DO NOWDate:11/23
Reminders
Describe the difference in the two lungs below. What might cause the differences that you observed?
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:How do the structures and functions of the respiratory system provide oxygen to the body?
OBJECTIVES:Explore the structures and functions of the respiratory system.
Teacher Demo: Breathing & Bromothymol Blue
BROMOTHYMOL BLUE: What are you breathing out?
When the teacher exhales into the Bromothymol Blue, then ______________________________ (what will happen?)
READ THE PARAGRAPH on Bromothymol blue.
1) What happened when the teacher breathed out into the bromothymol blue?
2) Why do we inhale?
3) Why do we exhale? What proof do you have?
Respiratory System
BrainPop: Respiratory System
Respiratory System (Lung Model Handout)
The function of the respiratory system is to provide oxygen to your body cells and remove carbon dioxide.
O2
CO2
Lung Model
Write the name of the system that we are exploring.
Describe your observations as you pull down on the balloon. What do you see?
Respiratory System Reading• Tape this
reading on to page ____
• Underline the body system
• Put boxes around the structures of the system
• Label these structures on the picture
DO NOWDate:11/24
Reminders:
Describe the structures (parts or organs) and function (the job) of the respiratory system.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:How do the structures and functions of the respiratory system provide oxygen to the body?
OBJECTIVES:Explore the structures and functions of the respiratory system.Understand the pathway of air flow in the lungs.
The Respiratory System
The Incredible Human Machine (6:30-8:30)
The Pathway of Air Foldable
1. Nasal Cavity(or oral cavity)
• Air enters the body through the nostrils (your nose) most of the time
• It is lined with a ciliated mucus membrane which filters, warms, and moistens the air
3. Trachea
• The main airway in the human respiratory system.
• It contains rings of a tough tissue (cartilage) which keep the trachea open.
4. Bronchi
• Two tubes that branch off the trachea.
• The bronchi are ringed with cartilage.
• Each bronchus extends to the lungs where the tubes become smaller.
Bronchi is plural. Both bronchi
Bronchus is singular. One
bronchus.
5. Bronchioles
• Smaller and smaller passageways that extend from each bronchus.
• The bronchioles are found in the lungs and not ringed with cartilage.
6. Alveoli
•The lungs are made of about 300 million of these tiny air sacs.
•When you breathe in air fills the alveoli.
• Oxygen leaves the alveoli, enters the
red blood cells and is returned to the
heart to be pumped to all your body
cells.
• Carbon dioxide is exhaled when you
breathe out.
Gas Exchange in the Alveoli
