Purpose of Magazines

• The purpose of magazines is two fold:

• To Entertain• To Inform

• Magazines continue to appear on the market and sell in huge numbers. Why?

• The tactile and visual nature of the medium differs from every other medium.

• They are portable and easy to access.

• Although the internet has had an impact on the mag market, much of what features in magazines is exclusive to the issue.

The industry

• Magazines exist to make money. An average magazine consists of 45% advertising with some fashion magazines exceeding 70%.

• Money is generated from the cover price of course but the primary revenue is generated by advertising. This is called ‘dual revenue stream’.

Genre of Magazines

• Magazines can be classified according to their content, their target audience and their frequency of publication (monthly, weekly).

• Task: What are the generic conventions of music magazines? What are they likely to contain?

• Front cover with featured artist• Tend to be genre specific• Interviews• Latest news• Reviews of albums, singles and live concerts• Contents page• Advertising specific to the genre

The Magazine Form

• Whatever the genre and target audience most magazines conform to a set of formal conventions.

• Have a discernible front cover with main image and masthead etc.

• Have a contents page.• Include adverts.• Feature articles.

• Music magazines can be sub-divided in accordance with musical genres.

• The music industry has always been keen to categorise music. Why?

• Because genres help them specifically target a market.

Music genres and markets• A music genre has to be marketed to its target

demographic. What media does the music industry use to do this?
