Do you guys have Ableton Live at City?
Yes! We also have Ableton-friendly hardware accessories available for students to use such as Ableton Push launch
pads
Hello everyone, i am an international student and i am interested to know about scholarships .. I have applied for
Piano Performance BA .. How can i get a scholarship?
Hello everyone. Are there any individual lessons for modules outside of performance - I am thinking of composition in
particular.
Hi, how does a schedule look like for Bsc Music, Sound and tech course? Is there a lot of spare time for jobs etc.
There is a minimum of 15 hours of contact time a week and this includes lectures, seminars, tutorials and reading
weeks. However, lots of students do have part-time jobs in the evening and weekend but don't forget you will need to
put time aside for studying outside of contact times.
What are the opportunities like for those wanting to go into the film music industry? Studios and production?
Hello . I'd say pretty good! We have an Oscar-winning composer as one of our alumni! One of our Professors in Music
is a world-leading expert, recently editing the Cambridge Companion to Film Music. We have great links with various
parts of the industry, which can be explored via the Work Placement module, or the sandwich year in industry. We
have a number of professionals visiting the course to speak to students. Finally, if you're interested in the BSc course
in Music, Sound and Technology, the third year has a major component called 'Sound and Image Interaction', where
students collaborate to make a film!
Are there rooms for practicing music or instruments to rent/borrow for recording?
Is it possible to attend lecturers for modules that you aren't taking to learn from them but not be credited?
What notation software do you use?
Hi there! We use Sibelius
Are there opportunities for live sound engineering? At real events/a module on the course?
Does the university supports their students to find a job (maybe in a professional studio) and if yes ,how?
Are there any scholarship opportunities?
How many practice rooms and studios do you have?
Are there opportunities for live sound engineering? At real events/a module on the course?
Sound Recording module teaches recording live situations and there are opportunities to exercise your live sound
engineering skills for events that take place in our Performance Space, for example, recitals of BM us students.
Voluntary assistance to the technical officers could be potentially arranged
Are there rooms for practicing music or instruments to rent/borrow for recording?
About 10 practice rooms and 6 studios. We are stocked with instruments and studio equipment to be used in the
spaces but they can't be rented or borrowed from those spaces.
Is it possible to get a performance scholarship in the second or third year as well?
Hi I just wanted to ask how diverse you felt the music bmus course is. Is there a wide variety of exposure to a variety
of genres, both classical and popular? Does it lean more to one genre than the other? Also is there much opportunity
in modules to try some of the technology side of music and any hands on experience and if so how big a proportion
of the course is it? Thankyou for your help:blush:
Studying Music at City makes for a particularly diverse set of possibilities - modules range from the history of Western
art music to various musical traditions from across the world, popular music, electronic dance music, contemporary,
experimental... The variety can be decided by you - the course opens out into a range of options in years II and Ill. Also,
many of the BSc core modules (more technology focused) are optional electives for BM us students, too.
I was wondering about the structure of the course. Is it more composition or recording or a mixture of the two?? I
was also wondering what performance opportunities there were in terms of music (orchestras, bands etc) and also
with performing with technology (DJ-ing etc)
It's a bit of a mixture. In your first year, there's Sound Recording and Studio Techniques 1, so there's not much
composition (particularly for the BSc). In your second year, there's Sound Recording and Studio Techniques 2, but you
also have the opportunity to choose from 3 Composition electives: Moving Images, Performance and Studio.
As for the performance aspect, you have to join an ensemble and you have a wide variety to choose from: Orchestra,
Experimental, African Dance and Drumming, Gamelan, etc. As for technology, you can definitely book any studio
outside of the lectures and work on your own compositions or mixes. regardless of the year you're in. Hope that
helps! :)
Hi everyone!, could someone describe the facilities available for the Bsc Music, Sound and Tech. and how accessible
they are for students? Thanks!
The facilities at City include a flexible Performance Space, rehearsal rooms, an ensemble room, Balinese and
Javanese Gamelan, the main Recording Studio (Audient), two recording/mix studios (Neve, SSL), three
composition/surround studios and Mac Labs. Most studios are equipped with either 5.1 or 8.1 Genelec systems. All of
the studios are equipped for sound editing, processing and mixing, and are equipped to deliver multi-track recording
and mixing to a professional standard. As well as general software such as Logic, Sibelius and Pro Tools, these studios
are equipped with Native Instruments Komplete, Ableton live, Max and IRCAM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

0 Hi everyone Its nice to meet you and i was wondering within this course do we get any opportunities to showcase the
skills we develop and learn and perform at events ?
Hi, how much on the music course is practical and how music is written work?
How well do you need to know how to use music production or notation software such as Logic or Sibelius prior to
entering the course?
No, don't worry about this. You will have some tutorials dealing with this in the first year. You will learn as you go.
Lecturers are willing to help you as you learn.
Is it possible to attend lecturers for modules that you aren't taking to learn from them but not be credited?
It is possible to audit modules depending on numbers signed up to the module. We recommend thinking carefully
about how many you can do though as your selected modules with course work are the priority.
Hi, on the music departments website there aren't currently any classical guitar individual instrumental tutors,
would it still be possible to get classical guitar lessons if I take the solo performance module?
Yes - if you arrived to study music with us, we would find a suitable teacher for your individual instrumental lessons.
Thankfully, as we are in the heart of London, world-class musicians are on our doorstep!
Are there any scholarship opportunities?
We have a number of scholarships and they can be found here. https://www.city.ac.uk/study/fees-and
funding/scholarships-and-bursaries Just filter the scholarships for your criteria. Like all scholarships students need to
check they are eligible and then they can apply. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that you will get a scholarship but
it is always worth applying.

Hello everyone. Are there any individual lessons for modules outside of performance - I am thinking of composition in
particular.
Hello . Every module has an allotted number of hours for one-to-one tutorials. If you pursue composition into the
final year, composition is then taught on a one-to-one basis for the entire year.
In how many instruments can instrumental tuition be offered?
I am mainly an electric guitar player and am interested in all genres, is to possible to form popular music ensembles
outside of the course and use the departments spaces to rehearse? Are there often students interested in popular
music to form contemporary ensembles with as well as classical and world?
Does the university supports their students to find a job (maybe in a professional studio) and if yes ,how?
Our department is very supportive of our professional futures. There is a sandwich year in the industry available as
well as an elective work experience module. There are weekly industry speaker sessions of people coming in to talk
about their work in the music industry. It is a great opportunity to network and make your way into the industry. We
also have a brilliant careers centre in the university that helps with writing CVs, mock interviews, psychometric tests,
etc.
How many rehearsals rooms are there?
Aside from the 120-capacity performance space, we have an ensemble room, percussion room, gamelan room and a
suite of practice rooms (another 10 in total)
Thank you, are the facilities open 24 hours a day?
The facilities are open 9-9 but you can apply for special weekend access. The library is open 24/7 during exam periods.
Can we manage to work and study and still manage to cover all the expenses during a hole year?
Hi, nice to meet you all! I have some questions regarding career prospects. 1 How will the course make me more
employable? Do they offer or arrange placements? 2 In what way do I get support if I ask for career advice?
In your second year, you can choose to take the Work Placement module, during which you will have to find a
placement or internship until a specified date. You will be given a list of available opportunities, but you'll also have to
browse on your own in the meantime until you find something that is right for you.
If you don't want to take this module (it's elective), you can ask your tutor or lecturers for help anytime. They're all
very open. There's also the City Careers service, where you can book slots for mock interviews or ask them to look over
your CV or cover letter. You can also look for internships with them.:)
Would we be issued any equipment to help us study like a laptop or a specific camera to use ? Or should we come
prepared with our own ?
c,
Is it possible to get a performance scholarship in the second or third year as well?
The performance scholarship is only for applicants applying for their first year but will run for the entirety of the
course subject to satisfactory academic progression and successful fulfilment of the scholar's leadership role.
What is Civitas?
Hello . Civitas is a chamber choir led by our of the Music staff Dr Alexander Lin gas, who (amongst other things)
specialises in early music performance practice, especially medieval Byzantine chant. Civitas is an ensemble option,
open to all students in all years.
In the sound & tech course - how much do we focus on composing, producing and creating music and how much do
we focus on the " technical" sides like sound engineering and the sound itself?
In your first year, there's more technical work than compositional. There's the Sound Recording and Studio
Techniques 1 module, which focuses on studio work: music production, recording, mixing, mastering, etc. You'll have
the opportunity to record a band in your second term. There's also Sound Design for working with sound specifically.
In your second year, there's three elective Composition modules and you can choose to take all three of them in
addition to the Sound Recording and Studio Techniques 2 module, which is a core module. So I would say there's a
mixture between both the technical and compositional aspects.
Do the students have to reserve before going to a practice room or a studio?
It is usually first come, first served basis for practice rooms. Studios (and equipment) have to be booked in advanced.
We have a reliable and simple on line booking system. During busier times, to ensure fair studio time (and practice
room) distribution, a token system is implemented.
I am interested in film music and would be interested in taking all of the composition modules, I was wondering what
they entail and how they differ?
Which instruments are the rehearsals rooms equipped with?
There's a piano in each practice room. In addition, there's a drum kit in the main studio.
Between what times do we have access to the practice rooms?
They are open 9-9 Monday- Friday.
Would we be issued any equipment to help us study like a laptop or a specific camera to use ? Or should we come
prepared with our own ?
We recommend that students bring their own laptops and camera equipment as this will not be provided by the
university. However, there are a number of computer rooms all throughout the campus.
Can we manage to work and study and still manage to cover all the expenses during a hole year?
Hi, how much on the music course is practical and how music is written work?
There's Music, Sound and Technology and Critical Listening (which runs only during the first term) that involve written
work. Everything else (Sound Recording and Studio Techniques, Sound Design, Practical Musicianship) is practical.

Can we manage to work and study and still manage to cover all the expenses during a hole year?
Yes, it's possible. There's not a lot of lectures, there's more individual work than anything. During your first term, you
will only go to uni for two hours everyday (occasionally four hours). On second term, you will have Tuesdays off. So
yes, it is possible. If you get a part-time job, you can arrange the working hours with your employer. They're usually
quite understanding when it comes to that.
What assessment methods are used? ... and What demands will it make on me?
There is no arranging module on the course, is this covered within the orchestration and instrumental studies module
for example arranging for big band etc. as well as orchestra?
What is our time table schedule like ? Is it early mornings or does it depend on what classes we have for the week and
does it stay the same each week
The timetable remains the same throughout the term. Yes, it depends on the class you're taking. The earliest lectures
I've had in my time at City was 9:30.
Regarding the recognition of credits, would international qualifications, on a NVQ level 3-4 level roughly, be
considered? That is, non-standard bachelor's degree studies.
Hi. This is an admissions-related question which we could not answer at the moment, I am afraid. Would you mind
emailing [email protected] so he could check for you .
As an EU resident (outisde the UK), I've heard London is a lot more expensive to live in compared to most English
cities. How well do you manage your expenses? Do most people have part-time jobs or get help from their guardians
or parents? Are there some very cheap student friendly accomodations in London?
How far are the accommodation sites from the campus and what are the price ranges?
We have 5 Halls of residence ranging from a 5 minute walk away to a 10 minute ride on the underground. With regard
to costs please follow the link to this page on our website;

How does one apply for instrumental tuition?
Hi. More information about this can be found here https://www.city.ac.uk/study/fees-and
funding/scholarships-and-bursaries/bmus-performance
BM us Performance Scholarship
Is there anything I can do to prepare myself furthermore for studying music&sound tech eg. books or software
The first year provides all what you need to know in terms of sound and all technical nuances. If you are already
teaching yourself how to use a particular software, it's great!
Is there usually availability for rehearsing? Is it possible to reserve a rehearsal room in advance?
What does the music business module cover and is there information on how to book gigs in London, does the
university have links to or can give advice on venues outside of those that performances on the course take place at?
At the end of the Music Business module, you will have to come up with a business plan, so the whole module focuses
on that. How to come up with your own business idea, what are the key elements you need to focus on, etc. Our
lecturer, Marius, also brought in a lot of industry speakers, so there's a good opportunity there to meet some
influential people. But this is only a second year module.
As for gigs, the lecturers usually have a lot of contacts in the industry, so you can always ask. They'll be happy to help!
What assessment methods are used? ... and What demands will it make on me?
Throughout the three years of the music degree, assessment is by a combination of project-based or practical and
creative work, and examinations or coursework. You will receive a considerable amount of tuition in small groups and
individually to maximise contact and enable you to tailor your work to your personal interests.
Marks obtained in your second and third years will contribute to your final degree award.
Coursework and examinations are typically worth 30% of the overall module mark, and the end-of-module project
worth 70%, although this varies across modules. Composition and creative practice modules are assessed by portfolio,
and performance modules are assessed by final recital and interim components.
Is there usually availability for rehearsing? Is it possible to reserve a rehearsal room in advance?
Yes, we have practice rooms available to use on first come, first served basis. Each contains a piano. You can always
book it out on our on line system, it is especially encouraged during busier times
There are 10 minutes left of this chat session. Please ask any further questions you have now.
