Do you recognize His voice
ldquohellipand the sheep follow him because they recognize his voicerdquo Wersquove probably all heard this reading more than once in our lifetimes The first few times I
heard it I thought it was ridiculous How would a sheep recognize the shepherdrsquos voice or even that he was calling him
I thought back to my childhood when the sun began to go down and the street lights were ready to come on I could hear my father calling in the distance All of the kids I hung out with in the neighborhood knew who it was He didnrsquot have to come looking for me I knew it was time to come home
Then there was that time when we were on vacation with our family in Mexico I tried to navigate the streets to get to church without my parents help I didnrsquot get very far before I found myself lost and all alone I was crying and inconsolable They heard me crying and I heard them calling my name They found me and took me home
Now I know how possible it is for Him to recognize my voice I wonder how often I have been able to recognize His
Do I recognize His voice in my fellow community members Do I hear Him when He invites me to be a part of the liturgy Do I hear Him calling to me when I am in need of His help Can I be a witness to others so that we can all recognize Him when He calls and we can go home together
My hope is that we all make time this Easter season to focus on recognizing His voice when He calls
Peace and Good

LITURGY CONNECTION
Simple Thoughts Jesus the Good Shepherd knows us ~ Itrsquos a truly humbling thought to know that the God of the universe the maker of heaven and earth the Creator the Savior the King of kings and Lord of lords the one who is who was and who always will be who is more famous than any movie star knows me Our God knows each and every one of us and not only knows us but loves us so much so that Jesus became human to be with us died to defeat death and rose so we can rise with Him living in relationship with Him forever This truth is celebrated during this Easter season and all times and it is revealed to us in the Scriptures we hear this weekend Today as we do in every Easter season we celebrate what is traditionally referred to as ldquoGood Shepherd Sundayrdquo In this cycle of readings we hear of a shepherd who knows his sheep Jesus says to us that He is ldquothe good shepherdrdquo and He knows His sheep and they know Him Because He knows us He lays down His life for us in love This is an intimate relationship Our second reading describes this relationship further and we are called to ldquosee what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of Godrdquo It is part of our identity We may try and ignore or reject this relationship but we cannot reject the cornerstone In the first reading Saint Peter is calling us to recognize that our relationship with God is foundational Like any relationship it takes more than one person We need to accept the love we are offered We must know the one who knows us With Christ as our foundation our cornerstone may we claim our identity as His children as the sheep who know their shepherd May we love as we are loved and lay down our lives for the one who laid his down for us ~ Alleluia

RENEWING LIVES Ourselves Our Communities Our World
Connecting the community to Franciscan theology programsThe Casarsquos community may know Larry
Fraher from his presentations on Thse St Johnrsquos Bible a subject he became passionate about and studied while attending graduate school at St Johnrsquos University MN during the Biblersquos
creation ldquoThe images can be catecheticalrdquo he said ldquoThey were transformational for merdquo
Now Larryrsquos relationship with the Casa has grown to help establish adult education programs here through the Franciscan School of Theology (FST) the Roman Catholic graduate school owned and operated by the Province of Saint Barbara ldquoSt Francis is a great connecting point to Christ because he makes Him very real for usrdquo Larry said ldquoOur collaboration with the Franciscan School of Theology will bring new theological learning opportunities insights into living the way of St Francis and the ldquowhysrdquo of the Catholic religionrdquo
Currently Larry is working to bring the FSTrsquos Franciscan Vision Series to the Casa ldquoThey are two-hour programs that include theological video
presentations given by FST instructors followed by a discussionrdquo he said ldquoWe hope to offer them monthly beginning this fall or winterrdquo
And Larry looks forward to initiating a more c o m p r e h e n s i v e learning collaboration that will create new programs at the Casa with FST leadership and faculty These could include online learning opportunities through streaming and smart classrooms for CEUrsquos and possibly degreed programs for graduate level studies with FST leadership
ldquoI am very excited to be developing this relationship with the Casa The friars stand for the best of the Catholic theological traditionrdquo he said ldquoThey are relatable and fully understand what God did through the incarnation and Christ and what that means for us
Since 1951 the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth healing and transformation and serving others
6387 guests attended retreats workshops and classes at the Casa in FY2014

Family Faith Activities April 26 4th Sunday of EasterIn todayrsquos Gospel Jesus compares himself to a good shepherd who cares for his sheep even to the extent of laying down his life for them This image describes Godrsquos love for us A good shepherd knows his sheep and they know him We are like sheep that listen to Jesusrsquo voice and belong to the family of God Gather your family and discuss ways that people love us and ways that we love others Read John 1011-18 and discuss
Why does Jesus call himself the ldquogood shepherdrdquo How does a good shepherd care for his sheepWhat does Jesus do for this flock How does Jesus know His sheep
