Coordination Tasks

document.docx Page 14 of 21

Page 15: Schwartz_ 09_15... · Web view(graduate level professional management courses): Coordinated teaching assignments and faculty hiring with the department chair. Coordinated course revisions

Coordinated the Advanced Design Studio (ADS) sequence of courses and the professional practice and management courses, recruiting, admissions, advising, recommendations on faculty hiring, review of curriculum issues, and program development. The number of ADS sections increased from the previous three to five including two online design studios, our first and probably the first in the nation (as described below).

Revised the syllabus for the five ADS sections, incorporated the Writing Committee’s recommendations for student writing standards into the standard ADS course syllabus, coordinated midterm and final reviews, devised review schedules, and coordinated the invitations of guest critics. I worked with the section instructors to establish standards for student work in the studios and assisted the two new adjunct instructors, Mark Farlow and John Abel, in their understanding and implementation of the course so that it reflected the on campus version of ADS and maintained or increased the existing standards.

Designed and distributed small posters publicizing the end-of-semester graduate reviews. These were posted around the school and distributed online by email and the weekly CoAD News

Online Graduate Design Studio Planning GroupParticipated with Glen LeRoy, Ed Orlowski, Paul Goldsmith, Richard Bush, and Ralph Nelson in the planning for our first online graduate design studios. We ultimately engaged Mark Farlow and John Abela to teach the online ADS courses. We also moved, in the spring of 2011, to offer Architectural Design 7 (AD 7) online, as this course was frequently needed by incoming online students. Summer 2010

Evaluation of Adjunct Instructors Solicited and completed evaluation documents for adjunct instructors of the professional practice and management courses, the Advanced Design Studio, and for AD 7.

Graduate Student AdvisingAdvised over 100 graduate advisees (Concentration in Design and Practice) I engaged in frequent informal counseling conversations with undergraduate students.

Pellerin Travelling Fellowship Revised and rewrote the Fellowship enabling text, in August 2010, and arranged a contact through Professor Richard Weston at Cardiff University (Wales, U.K.) so that Alina Chelaidite (2010 Fellow) could visit the Foster + Partners office in London as part of her travel and study program. April 2011

Nominations of CoAD Faculty for University AwardsTeaching and Learning Using Technology Awards ProgramPrepared and submitted nominations of Mark Farlow and John Abela. February 25, 2011

Professional Practice: Ethics InstructionDeveloped a program of revisions and enhancements to the teaching of ethics in the professional practice courses with Assistant Dean Ralph Nelson. The revisions were coordinated into the Professional Practice course (AR 5913) with adjunct faculty, Matt Bohde and Thomas Platz, who implemented the revisions.

Report to the ProvostPresented an Activities Report 2010-2011 regarding the Concentrations in Architectural Design and Practice and Global Architecture and Practice at the CoAD Faculty Meeting with Dr. Maria Vaz and Associate Provost Al McCord on February 8, 2011.

Exploration DaySession Leader: Spring 2011

Faculty Searches Identified and helped recruit several key CoAD faculty members: Margaret Wong (ID 3 and 4), Ralph Nelson (assistant dean, in my role as a member of the assistant dean search committee), Mark Farlow (ADS online and on campus instructor), Jennifer Perlove Siegel (design theory and research methods online instructor). Developed a faculty search protocols/check list for Ralph Nelson (chair, design faculty and chair search committee) based on our recent search committee proceedings.

The hope for a greenway in downtown Ann Arbor was revived in 2004 with expressions of interest on the part of key figures in the development community, the Department of Parks and Recreation, regional land trusts, and the public. We incorporated the group in the State of Michigan in September 2005 as the Allen Creek Greenway Conservancy. We have been granted 501.3.c status under federal law and have created a proposed route for the Greenway. The ACGC has sponsored and cooperated with several studies of the Greenway. The economics of the Greenway were examined, several years ago, by graduate students at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. This fall, a group of graduate students in the Urban and Regional Planning Program at the University of Michigan will develop and propose a master plan for the Greenway.

Currently, I am working with my ACGC colleague, Joe O’Neal, to advise inForm Architects on their draft proposal for the “SkyTrail” project, a bridge crossing North Main Street in Ann Arbor. The propose bridge would connect the Allen Creek Greenway with existing trails along the Huron River.

Urban Design AdvocatesAnn Arbor, Michigan, 2000-2002

UDA, an ad hoc urban design action group, prepared a “Greater Downtown Ann Arbor Urban Design Principles and Checklist” as a guide for citizens, developers, and civic officials in March 2000. We also met with the Democratic (majority) caucus of the Ann Arbor City Council to promote a thoughtful approach to the proposed expansion of City Hall. In 2002, we developed a “Prospectus for an Ann Arbor Downtown Greenway” which also addressed storm water issues associated with Allen’s Creek.

Property Planning Committee / Huron Valley Girl Scout Council Ann Arbor, Michigan, Fall 2001-Spring 2002

The Property Planning Committee was appointed by the HVGSC Board to study and prepare a set of recommendations for the development of the Council’s three camps over the next 20 years. We prepared a report outlining options for the Council.
