Hunter attended the University of Iowa for her MS in Biomedical Informatics and Spelman College for her BS in Computer Science. UPCOMING PRESENTATIONDHA Student and MUSC Faculty scheduled to present at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting: Walter Jones, PhD, Latecia Abraham, MHA (DHA in 5/12), Thomas Smith, PhD and Nancy Bracken, DHA are co-authors in a poster session during the annual meeting of the APHA this October. The session focuses on the meaning of the differences of male vs. female patterns of mentorship and succession planning in Community Health Centers. This study encompasses the scope of Latecia

Abrahams’ dissertation research for the completion of her doctorate degree. The primary objective is to explore and identify gender differences within health centers and analyze the extent of leadership diversity and how it may be complemented by mentorship and planning of the organization to eradicate obstacles to career advancement.

DHA CANDIDATE CO-AUTHORS PUBLICATIONDHA candidate (Cohort 10) Sabrina Suber Vereen, MHA, is a co-author of the manuscript titled “Patient-Centeredness: A Best

Practice for HBCU Health Professional Education Programs?” It has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy. Their study examined physician and nursing patient-centeredness’ influence on the satisfaction of Black and African-American female Medicaid patients to enhance Health Professional Education programs at historically black colleges and universities in America. Congratulations to Sabrina Suber Vereen!

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMCongratulations to Chayla Handley, a second year MHA student and CHP SGA President, as the first recipient of a summer internship made possible by the generosity and vision of a CHP DHA Alumni, Dr. Brian R. Poplin. Handley recently completed a summer internship at Max-Wellness in Cleveland Ohio. Dr. Poplin made this ten-week internship possible through a philanthropic gift. Dr. Poplin also established the Dr. Brian R. Poplin Fund for the Advancement of Working Professionals in Healthcare Leadership at CHP in 2006. Handley’s extraordinary and unique experiences have included participation in executive-level meetings, input on company-wide projects, and involvement in program development. In a recent email communication to Dr. Poplin, Miss Handley enthusiastically expressed her sincere appreciation for this life changing experience. “I am confident that being immersed in this environment is not only sharpening me for the general business world, but also reinforcing my ability to succeed in healthcare administration. I am experiencing things that most people my age would never have the opportunity to experience,” states Handley. Congratulations Miss Handley and special thanks to Dr. Poplin for his steadfast support of educational opportunities for our outstanding students!
