No other institution currently offers such an academically and administratively cohesive doctoral program that combines Latino education, a variety of cultural and linguistics issues, and international issues. As a graduate, you will learn theoretical, conceptual and research methodology used to study culture, literacy and language. You will also be prepared to conduct interdisciplinary research in multicultural- multilingual contexts. PROGRAM OPTIONS This doctoral degree requires a minimum of 60 semester credit hours beyond the master’s degree. The core curriculum consists of 24 semester credit hours of required courses. In addition, you will complete a minimum of 12 hours in research methods, nine hours of electives and 15 hours in doctoral research. An advisor will work with you to construct a program of study that is approved by your dissertation advisor, the dissertation committee and the Doctoral Studies Committee. Final approval of the program rests with the Dean of Graduate Studies. You must fulfill university-wide requirements, including residency. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates of this program have a wide range of career opportunities within institutions of higher learning, K-12 central office administration/ leadership, K-12 research organizations, community college teaching and community development. Admission Requirements A master’s degree is required in an area such as: anthropology, applied linguistics, bicultural-bilingual studies, foreign language education, history, international business, linguistics, psychology, sociology or teaching English as a Second Language. Master’s degrees in other fields may be accepted, subject to the approval of the Doctoral Program Committee.A portfolio consisting of the following items will be evaluated by the Doctoral Program Committee:• A GPA of 3.5 or better in an approved master’s degree program• Graduate Records Examination (GRE) score (analytical plus verbal)• For students whose master degree is from a non-English speaking university, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score • Advanced proficiency in a language other than English • Three letters of recommendation attesting to the student’s academic and personal attributes for success in the program and the potential for contributing substantially to a field of study related to the degree • A sample of academic writing, such as a paper written for a course, a master’s thesis or a scholarly publication • Statement of purpose: A description of research interests, reasons for seeking doctoral study and connections between the candidate’s interests/professional goals and the program in Culture, Literacy and Language. • A resume or curriculum vitae
