Doctors of Terror

For most physicians there is some kind of oath that they take as part of their graduationfrom Medical School. Though the most well known is the Oath of Hippocrates, in thetwentieth century the oath has been revised to be more applicable, not only to currentmedical and social trends, but also to the individual needs and viewpoints of the physiciansthemselves.

The original oath, once taken by every physician worldwide, was written by Pythagoreanphysicians and included elements which would be uncomfortable to staunch Christians,Jews and Muslims:

I swear by Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, allthe goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgment, the following Oath.

For monotheists the above oath poses a problem in that the physician is being asked toswear by the gods of a polytheistic religious base. As a Christian, I could not say that partof the oath in good conscience.

Most medical schools have some kind of oath, and many of the larger ones have their ownoath separate and apart from the Oath of Hippocrates. According to a 1993 survey of 150U.S. and Canadian medical schools, only 14 percent of modern oaths prohibit euthanasia,11 percent pledge by a deity, 8 percent reject abortion, and 3 percent forbid sexualcontact with patients, which were all maxims held sacred in the classical version.

For most burgeoning physicians, the remainder of the oath poses no problem. New versionshave been proposed which alter the abortion limitation (Nor will I give a woman a pessaryto procure abortion) and for those from the Dr. Kevorkian school of medicine, the sectionabout not prescribing a drug to induce suicide is altered or omitted (To please no one willI prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death.)

There is a Christian Physicians Oath which, if a doctor is of the Christian faith, he or shemay take and its considered as valid as any other medical oath. The Rambam medical oathis available for Jewish doctors. And, for those who feel no call to a particular persuasion,theres always the World Medical Oath.

And yes, Virginia, the Muslims also have a Medical Oath.

BAD MEDICINE? OR POOR INTERPRETATION?In the past week the UK has been slammed by a spate of terrorist attacks. None of themhave been on the scale of 7-7 and all have been thwarted with minimal loss of life andproperty.

However, what has come out of the event is quite disturbing. The suspects were not poor,uneducated young men who were limited in intellectual capabilities. Rather, one might

consider them the creme de la creme of Islamic culture. For you see, all are eitherphysicians or physicians in training:

-Dr. Bilal Abdulla was a passenger in the Jeep that slammed into Glasgow airport. He wastrained in Iraq and moved to Britain in 2006.

-Unnamed Locum Doctor was the driver of the Jeep. He set himself on fire and is beingtreated for burns over 90% of his body.

-Dr. Mohammed Asha and wife. Considered brilliant, he came from Jordan where heexcelled in academics even as a child. He moved to Britain to complete his medicaltraining. He is a neurosurgeon. Neighbors reported that the Ashas seemed to be a nicecouple (they have a child) and that he was always immaculately dressed.

-Unnamed Liverpool suspect, a Junior Doctor.

-Two Unnamed suspected, both male, both believed to be Junior Doctors.

-Dr. Mohammed Haneef was arrested in Australia. Only 27 years old, thought of as a modelcitizen was arrested when authorities intercepted a phone call between himself and oneof the other suspects.

This is the list to date of those arrested in the plot. A plot which, fortunately, did not seefruition.

But this curious turn of events leaves one wondering if its only the so-called radicalMuslims we have to fear.

I cannot say whether or not these doctors took the Muslim Medical oath. What I can say forcertain is that were not talking about poor, uneducated Muslim males who see no futurefor themselves so they end up resorting to violence.

The same Quranic verse cited in the Muslim medical oath that would ostensibly prohibitthem from taking a life still gives them an out depending on how they view the non-Muslims around them:

Whoever killeth a human being, not in liew of another human being nor because ofmischief on earth, it is as if he hath killed all mankind. And if he saveth a human life, hehath saved the life of all mankind.

In other words, its okay to kill someone who has either a) committed murder or, b) causedmischief on earth. As far as I know, the Muslim Oath is the only medical oath in the worldthat allows a physician to kill anyone.

Until theres more questioning of the suspects we will not know their particular view of thepeople in the UK nor the west in general. What is obvious, however, is that these doctorscould well be the Jihadi Kevorkians. While these recent actions are appalling, what is moreappalling is that Muslim doctors have been refusing to treat patients for a while now.

An article in the Hindustan Times cited that Muslim physicians in Leeds, London and otherinner city areas have been known to pass STD patients on to other general practitionersbecause they believe that anyone acquiring an STD got it as a punishment from Allah.

At the same time, female Muslim medical students in the UK are insisting on wearing the

Islamic veil called the niqab, which does not allow the patient to see their doctors face.This violates one of the standard rules of medical practice.

To illustrate how one could be trained in one of the most noble professions, be anacademic, and still adhere to archaic societal views, all one has to do is listen to Dr. ZakirNaik who is one of the most educated and famous Muslim personalities and a medicaldoctor. He is also president of the Islamic Research Foundation.

While Dr. Naik is known for his interfaith dialog he is also known to use some of the sameconcepts as the alleged radicals without any clarity as to what he means by terms likeenemies of Islam. Until such time as the term enemy of Islam is clearly defined we

cannot know who will be its next target. Nor can we know with any surety who willbecome the next Jihadi martyr.
