THE ARTS:LITERATURE, MUSIC, ART, DANCES

"The great literacy and artistic heritage of Mexico,

both of the Aztec Indians and of their Spanish conquerors."

The tri-faced symbol was designed to commemorate the birthof the Mexican mestizo race or, more currently, the Chicanopeople.

The Spanish conquistodores interbred with the MexicanIndian, giving birth to the mestizo. Today, a mestizo is theterm used to refer to the Spanish-Indian heir.

To differentiate between Mexican nationals and Mexican-Americans, the latter, many years ago, adapted for himselfthe name "Chicano" as a synonym for mestizo. Thus the tri-facesymbolizes five hundred years of history: Spanish father;Indian mother; Chicano child.
