the nation embracing over five million workers.

In 1900, there were less than two health workersassisting each physician in the care

of patients.

Twelve health workers complemented each physician

in 1970, and the ratio is

increasing.

Demands for services have expanded and personnel

devote their talents and energies

to health maintenance, prevention of illness, aswell as caring for the ill.

New career

opportunities will develop as the role of the health

worker changes.

Educational agencies,

therefore, have a responsibility to assist students to prepare for

employment in the health care

industry.

The purpose of this course is to create student awareness

of the broad range of health

occupations.

It can be adapted for use at the junior high school, highschool, post-secondary or

adult levels, and is designed to be used in a variety of ways.

The program can be offered for

one year, one period a day (45 minutes)

totaling approximately 180 hours.

This can be increased

or decreased as time allows, depending upon

the student audience.

Each unit contains one cluster

in which several related occupations are presented.

This enables the student to learn about career

families within the entire health field.

It is hoped that Orientation to Health

Occupations will

motivate students to seek further education in the health field.

Each health occupation listed, follows an outline that includes adescription of the work

involved, personal qualifications of the worker, employment opportunities

including locations

of employment, working

conditions, financial and

other rewards, and futureOutlooks.

Educational

requirements, includinglicensure or certification,

are also

contained in the outline.

A sample

of this outline is shown in

the first unit of each

cluster.

Several audio - visualmaterials are

suggested for each unit.

The teacher should select

those which are mostappropriate for the

individual group.

Evaluative tools should be

determined and used bythe teacher at appropriate

intervals throughout the course.

The Division of VocationalEducation, Health OccupationsUnit, welcomes comments and

suggestions

from teachers following the use

of these outlines.
