Basel has a new number – the Volkshaus

In several steps, Volkshaus Basel will be remodeled and former uses reinstated such as hotel, shop, bar (No.1), brasserie (No.2), concert hall (No.4, 5 and 6). The architectural intervention by renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron aims to revitalize the diversity of uses of the unique location in order to combine cultural events, arts and gastronomy in one and the same building.

In spring 2012, Volkshaus Basel opened its No.1 (Bar), No.2 (Bras-serie) and No.3 (Courtyard). Together with the already opened event spaces (No.4, 5 and 6), the location is already today able to offer an unparalleled diversity of uses in order to satisfy the needs and wishes of its visitors.

Volkshaus Basel is situated right in the centre of Kleinbasel, just a few steps away from Claraplatz and only 5 minutes from Messe Basel.

How to get there

Basel railway station (SBB) and French railway station (SNCF):Exit the station towards Centralbahnplatz. Then take the tram No. 8, direction Kleinhüningen, to Claraplatz.

Badischer Bahnhof (German railway station):Tram No. 6, direction Allschwil to Claraplatz.

There are no private parking facilities at Volkshaus Basel – please use car park Claramatte or Messe Basel.

– Bar10:00 am – a freshly brewed coffee with a croissant, served by a cordoally breakfast lady who knows her guests and how to spoil them. The dish of the day around lunchtime from the brasserie next door – the Tatar au Frites or even a club sandwich and a Champagne in the afternoon, a glass of local Riesling or a fresh beer from the tap. The day at the Volkshaus bar, which has been styled by Her-zog & de Meuron, begins early and has many exquisite meals and snacks on offer all day long. Immerse yourself in the classic bar atmosphere with music towards the evening and a wide range of cocktails prepared individually by our chef de bar. In short, the bar is a lively meeting place for any time and any occasion.

– BrasserieThe Brasserie of the new Volkshaus Basel combines classic brasse-rie-style elements with special design touches and adheres to the warmth and generosity of a beer hall. The combination of tradition and modernity also defines the range of head chef Benjamin Mohr dares to bridge the gap between simplicity and something a bit more special. Simple and tasty lunches but also a «Filet de Boeuf» or oyster specials seek to meet all culinary desires at the brasserie.

– BiergartenUnder a canopy of trees, in the heart of Kleinbasel, the beer garden creates an atmosphere of comfort and sociability. Meals from the brasserie and a wide selection of wines and fresh-from-the-tap beers are served here, noon to evening. On request, it is possible to rent the beer garden for your own purposes as well.

– Festsaal and FoyerThe largest room at Volkshaus Basel can host up to 1,300 people standing. It can be converted from an acoustically impeccable con-cert hall with modern lighting- and sound systems to a banqueting- or event hall in a short space of time. The possibilities are almost limitless: Company- and marketing presentations, gala dinners, theatre performances, concerts, weddings, etc.

– GalerieThe smallest room may well be the most beautiful one – the Volk-shaus Galerie has its own terrace onto the tree-covered courtyard and a gallery floor. The former library allows for events of up to 100 guests in an elegant atmosphere and with a superb atrium view.

It is of great importance to us in Volkshaus Basel, to take special care of selecting and processing our groceries. We use regional and seasonal goods, out of ethical husbandry and ecological production.Our Executive Chef, Benjamin Mohr and his team, are looking for-ward to arrange an individual offer for your event.
