HOW DO YOU DEFINEORIGINAL / OFFICIAL / PROPER
ACADEMIC DOCUMENTS?
Original documents: those which are given to the student upon leaving the school or institution; often one-of-a-kind
Official documents: those which are sent directly in a sealed and stamped envelope
Proper documents: those which give a complete picture of a students academic progress, and are issued by the responsible authority
Fax copies

Regular photocopies
Certified or notarized photocopies

DOCUMENT TERMINOLOGY
Know what credentials are called in the country you are working with i.e. Statement of Marks or Marksheet, Relevé de notes, Histórico
Escolar, etc.
Know what format to expect i.e. Hardcover booklet, hand written courses/grades, computer
generated, typewritten, or a combination
“Transcript” is not commonly used
Have an understanding of what is reasonable to ask for / expect

6 Steps for credential assessment for refugees and displaced people
1) Determine when an alternative method is needed
2) Gather information and available evidence – reconstruct the applicant’s history:
• Any available transcripts (including partial and non-official)• an application• a sworn statement• an interview
3) Develop a background paper and portfolio of evidence• Any available transcripts• Student IDs• Class lists• Proof of tuition payment• Admittance to state examinations• Copies of licenses / certificates• Statements of professional standing• Witness statements
