DocumentationThroughtheuseofvariousobservationmethods,childcareprofessionalscanrecordassortedinformation.Childcareprofessionalscanrecordphysical,social,emotional,and/orcognitivedevelopmentinformation.
Iftherecordingstyleallows,detailbeyondayesornoanswerandexplainhowachildbehavesoracts.Recordingahighamountofinformationismoreusefulforadequateanalysis.

DocumentationChildcareprofessionalsshouldavoidcertainareaswhendocumentingchildren’sbehavior.Thereshouldbeacleardifferencebetweenobjectiveandsubjectiverecordedinformation.Anyinterpretationofaobservationshouldbewrittenseparatelyfromtheactualobservation.
Documentationshouldneverincludeonlyoneobservation.Accurateanalysiscannotbemadewithoneobservation.

DocumentationChildcareprofessionalsworkveryhardtocreateacomfortablerelationshipforbothchildrenandparents.Anyconfidentialorpersonalbackgroundinformationthathasbeensharedwiththechildcareprofessionalmustnotbeincludedinanydocumentationofbehavior.
Recordsshouldnotbediscussedinanareawherechildren,parents,orotheradultscouldheartheconversationandshouldbestoredinasafeplace.

Itisalsoveryeasyfortheobservertotakebehaviorsoutofcontext,resultingininaccuratedata.Becausesomanydetailscanberecordedusinganecdotalrecords,theobservermayhavedifficultyanalyzingthedatacollected.
