New Year, New Decade, New…
I was reading an introduction to an article in a newspaper Magazine in the middle of December,
which brought me up short in a way. It was an article reviewing the 2010s, because we are at the
end of that decade. Wait a minute I thought… but then yes, we are.
The article spoke about things like the rise of the Avocado (seemingly now in everything you eat in
a café) to Uber, the taxi hailing app, to the use of Social Media is all its varieties. Politically (and
this article appeared 2 days after our most recent election) there was the coalition government. In
sporting terms there was the 2012 Olympics and its opening ceremony starring James Bond and
the Queen; there was the rise of Park runs and people doing triathlons.
Importantly we could perhaps add that the 2010s were the decade where we as human beings
finally became more aware of the need to care for God’s Creation more carefully.
There may be many things you would want to put in your reflection of 2010s - 9 of our 11
grandchildren arrived in this decade.
But also 2010s will be for some of us marked by loss and sadness.
Not only are we about, as I write, to enter a New Year and to celebrate the start of 2020, but we are
also starting a new decade in our calendar.
I wonder what we are looking forward to in the next year and/or decade?
I wonder what are expectations are for ourselves, for our families, for our nation, for the world
around us, for science and technology, for our ability to care for one another.
And what about God?
Something I often find myself saying is: ‘It is the God of love who comes alongside us in the midst
of the good and the difficult times, in times of happiness and times of sadness, in times of joy and
in times of grief and bereavement.’ This is something I very much believe within my own life and
for us all.
In all the change over the years I have personally been comforted by the verse from Hebrews:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
The same Jesus, whose birth we have just been celebrating, remains a rock, a foundation.
Psalm 18 verse 2 reads:
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Something to take with us into the New Year and the New Decade, for there is the hope of God for
us in Jesus Christ, His Son sent to us as Lord and Saviour.
Whatever our expectations, whatever the unknowns that are before us, Jesus came as Emmanuel,
God with us, and that applies for all things.
May you know God’s blessings this New Year and New Decade

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Sally Mills has taken over as Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator in the village. The Council would like to
thank Mrs Jackson for her sterling work as Co-ordinator and is grateful to Mrs Mills for taking on the role.
HIGHWAYS
The Parish Council has contacted Lenham Storage regarding HGVs going through the village. A director
has assured the Council that the company briefs its HGV drivers not to use Faversham Road as a route
between to the Faversham area and back to the depot. Lenham Storage will continue to monitor the data
they receive from their own fleet and advise drivers accordingly. Their drivers are instructed not to use
their own navigation systems.
If any Lenham Storage vehicles are seen coming through the village, the company has asked to be
provided with the last three digits of the vehicle registration number, the first four are too generic, and the
date the vehicle was seen. Please send details to the Clerk for forwarding

WAR MEMORIAL
Concerns had been raised about volunteers working on the banks near the War Memorial. The War
Memorial Risk Assessment has assessed that volunteers should not be on the bank if the ground is
unsuitable and that a car should be parked on the road and cones be placed in the road to warn traffic of
a potential hazard and make the base of the steps and banks safe from traffic. Councillors considered a
request for heavy wire strands to be stretched across the bottom of the banks as a safety grab stopping
people working on them ending in the road, but it was felt that this could cause physical harm and that the
risk assessment was proportionate and provided for an alternative safety measure.
SPEED WATCH
Speed Watch sessions are held in the village. If you would like to volunteer to join the team, please
contact Cllr Fraser. Full training is given.

Herbert William John Wildash was born on 13th November 1919 in Lynsted and now a Centenarian living in
Lenham. His daughter, Jacquie, has helped him by taking down in 2013 the recollections of his work and
then there have been subsequent additions.
He started about his work; “I left Doddington School at 14 and worked for about 3 years at Doddington Place
on the Estate of Mrs Maud Jeffries, before joining the family building firm in Teynham. I used to help my
Grand-father who was the Estate Manager for Doddington Place, and had a variety of duties, some of which
were; Wood reefing (keeping the woods in good condition and preparing them for the Underwood sales of
chestnut for fencing which was cut down every 12 years), training gun dogs, looking after the orchards and
the coach roads, also seeing to the chickens etc.
There are many descriptions of his work and this month we will see what they did at Doddington Church.
The family firm gave up and “Dad started his own business with me, now 18, based at 4, The Retreat,
Doddington.”
“We did the maintenance of Doddington Church. We painted the steeple twice. We used a 50 style
wooden ladder. The tower had a square top so we could stand on top. We lashed 2 metal poles across the
top so we could stand on top. We lashed 2 metal poles across the top and slung a scaffold board the width
of the side down the side and walked down the ladder to clamber on to the board, and sit on it with the paint
pot and paint. Then lower the board down for the next section. We charged £90 for the job, for two coats of
lead paint.
We also decorated the inside of the Church which was all done on wooden ladders. Beams to be brushed
off and stained, and the walls painted. Bats were a problem so Dad had the idea to have two ladders up
and tennis racquets. The Vicar had a long pole and disturbed the bats and dad and I batted them. This
worked well.”
“We also converted Doddington Chapel into the Village Hall as it is now. We maintained it over the years
often doing minor repairs without charging for it.”
There is a lot more about his life and working so we will have some more in here in other months.

The date for the 2020 Show has been set for 5 September 2020 in Doddington Village Hall. As usual it’s the
Saturday after the late August Bank Holiday.

I would like to introduce myself as the new Neighbourhood Watch coordinator for Doddington Village. Some of you know me already, but for those who don't, I have lived with my family in the Village for 4 years. I also grew up here and am lucky to have family in the Village.
Although I am currently covering the Newnham area as well, this is a temporary situation and a volunteer to take over the role of Newnham coordinator would be greatly appreciated.
For those on my mailing list, I will be contacting you, hopefully not too often, with any Neighbourhood Watch news that gets passed to me from the Crime Prevention Team at Kent Police. Likewise, if any of you have any concerns that you would like me to report, please email me on the above address and I can send out an alert to the members on the mailing list (if there is any immediate threat, you should dial 999 or 101 to report a non-urgent crime).

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt and the worms did not live in us forever.We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up game with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen we did not put our very many eyes.We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.Little League had try-outs and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!If YOU are one of them – CONGRATULATIONS. You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives “for our own good.” While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Eastling School News Brownie Diary November
The Brownies did much good work in December beginning with Christmas Mingle for which we raised £95.90 for the Church Building Fund from selling handmade festive table decorations, that the girls devoted a whole evening to making, baked goods, games including Sweets in Jar and Treasure Hunt, silken scarves and other assorted decorations.
Perhaps our festive highlight was seeing Rainbow Owl star as Evil Fairy Ebony (Da, da, da!) in Sleeping Beauty. It was a huge secret and none of the girls knew until they saw Rainbow Owl live on stage at the dress rehearsal! We donated the week’s subs of £14 towards the upkeep and improvement of Doddington Village Hall.
Our final festive event was Carol Singing around Newnham and in The George pub, the girls braving wind and rain to raise £135 for Crisis at Christmas.

Term 2 at Eastling Primary School was filled with singing and rehearsals for the infant nativity, which took place on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th December. The children worked hard to learn their lines and take on many different roles to tell the story of ‘The Inn-Spectors.’
Eastling Primary School were delighted to have three beautiful Christmas trees donated to the school. The first tree can be seen in the school grounds, the second has been placed in the corridor and the largest is in the school hall. The children bring in baubles from home to decorate the school tree.
The FOES organised the annual school visit to Mother Goose at The Marlow theatre and the Christmas shopping afternoon. The children love being able to buy presents for their family and friends and have them wrapped ready for Christmas. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the school hall as the elves are busy wrapping.
The school choir took part in a local schools carol concert on Monday 9th December, which was held at Highsted Grammar school. Shooting Stars Entertainment visited on Tuesday 10th December for the pantomime Sleeping Beauty. The FOES kindly contributed towards the cost of the pantomime for the school to enjoy.
Our infant classes went to the Gulbenkian theatre in Canterbury on Friday 13th December to watch The Snow Dragon. On the same day, Eastling Primary School took part in the Christmas jumper day and the FOES organised a Christmas craft afternoon.
Years 5 and 6 went to Horton Kirby Environmental Centre on 22nd November for a Victorian Day. The children spent the day in a Victorian classroom where they did observational drawing of taxidermy, maths on slate and participated in drill and playground games.
Eastling Primary School’s Christingle Service was held at St Mary’s on Tuesday 17th December. Macknades very kindly donated the oranges for all the children. The service with filled with singing and the classes all participated in different ways.
Miss Johnson, one of our teachers is spending Christmas day volunteering at the homeless shelter. As part of this, she decided to collect clothing and toiletries to donate to the homeless as presents on Christmas Day. The support from our families has been amazing and Miss Johnson wanted to express her gratitude.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Term begins on Monday 6th January 2020.

Christmas Quiz at the Chequers Inn, Doddington
A massive thank you to Phil Hope at the Chequers for hosting a Christmas
Quiz in aid of the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association on the
15th of December. Thanks to the generosity of Phil and those who came along
we raised £260 on the night which will make a huge difference to local people
living with this dreadful disease.
