THE EARLY YEARS: 1914 TO 1942

After starting out building bicycles and, later, components for the fl edgling automobile business, the Dodge brothers produced their inaugural vehicle on Nov. 14, 1914, and it was the fi rst car built with an all-steel body. Within a year Dodge became the nation’s third-largest automaker and offered its fi rst “winter car” with a removable hardtop and snap-on side glass.

The brothers would both pass away in 1920, but their legacy would continue through the Roaring ’20s with an assortment of stylish, fully enclosed cars and pickup trucks. The company was subsequently sold to a consortium of investment bankers in 1925, and then to the Chrysler Corp. in 1928. The company’s fi rst six-cylinder engine debuted that year, with an eight-cylinder engine following in 1930.

The Dodge line was redesigned in 1934, with new features including the industry’s fi rst automatic overdrive transmission. As with the rest of the industry, Dodge cars became longer, lower and wider the in years immediately preceding World War II as the industry embraced streamlined styling cues.

With the federal government ordering automakers to halt production of passenger cars in February of 1942, Dodge focused on supporting the war effort, with its Chicago plant alone building over 18,000 engines for B-29 bombers.

TAIL FINS AND MUSCLE CARS: 1945 TO 1979

The fi rst post-war Dodges are built in the fall of 1945, though they’re essentially refreshed 1942 models. The 1950s see the fi rst all-new models in a decade, with aristocratic names like Coronet, Diplomat and Royal. The fi rst Dodge V8 engine, the “Red Ram” Hemi, enters production in 1952.

Dodge made an ill-fated attempt to reach women buyers in 1955 with the La Femme; it was equipped with a face-powder compact, lipstick case, cigarette case, comb and change purse, along with a pink calfskin purse that matched the car’s interior. An under-dash “Hi-Way Hi-Fi” record player premiered in 1956, along with the industry’s fi rst push-button transmission. Dodge models adorned with massive tail fi ns would begin to hit the highways in 1957.

The 1960’s would see the birth of the muscle-car era with models like the Charger and Coronet “Super Bee,” and it would fl ourish through the 1970s with the introduction of the Challenger.

THE MODERN ERA: 1980 TO NOW

With the onset of federal safety, emissions and fuel economy standards, the 1980s would see Dodge’s lineup become smaller and smarter, with models like the compact Omni and midsize Aries “K car” leading the pack. The Dodge Caravan minivan – nicknamed the “magic wagon” – debuted in 1984 and caused a revolution in family transportation. Dodge’s pickup truck line would be renamed Ram for the 1981 model year.

A fresh range of models throughout the 1990’s included the compact Neon and full-size Intrepid, but the big news would be the introduction of the low-slung two-seat Viper sports car, powered by an 8-liter engine that put a then-staggering 400 horsepower to the pavement.

Offering a full line of passenger cars and trucks, Dodge would subsequently rekindle the muscle car in 2006 with the return – after a prolonged absence – of both the full-size Charger and a Hemi V8 engine. The Challenger coupe likewise rejoined the lineup in 2008 as a true contender with a 6.1-liter, 425-horsepower Hemi V8.

The compact Dodge Dart hit the market running in 2012 as the fi rst model developed in conjunction with the company’s current owner, the Fiat Group. Dodge celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014 and recently lit the candles on the proverbial cake by unveiling the industry’s fastest muscle car, the screaming 707-horsepower Challenger SRT Hellcat.

It’s been a century since brothers John and Horace Dodge built their fi rst vehicle, and the cars, trucks, minivans and crossovers have been rolling

off the automaker’s assembly lines ever since.

Here’s a look at 100 years of history from America’s performance-minded car company.

Brothers John and Horace Dodge got their start designing and producing bicycles in the late-1890s. At the turn of the century, the pair get out of the bike business and started what would later become the largest machine shop in Detroit.

In 1901 they began supplying engines, transmissions and axles to the nascent automobile industry, citing Oldsmobile and Northern as major customers. In 1903, the shop transitions to focusing exclusively on creating production drawings and all mechanical parts for the new Ford Motor Co. Over the next decade the Dodge Plant grows to 78 acres and more than 5,000,000 feet of manufacturing space before the Dodge brothers decide to ditch the Ford business and introduce their own car.1914: The fi rst Dodge vehicle – and the fi rst with an all-steel body – leaves the Dodge plant on Nov. 14. By the end of the year, 259 Dodge vehicles are built.1915: Dodge introduces a “winter car,” which features a removable hard top and snap-on side glass.1917: Dodge enters the commercial truck fi eld with both civilian and military trucks (built on a passenger-car chassis).1920: Both Dodge brother pass away, John on Jan. 14 and Horace on Dec. 20.1923: The company introduces the fi rst all-steel Business Coupe.1924: A major plant expansion increases employment to 20,000 people and produces 1,000 cars a day.1925: A group of New York

Bankers acquire the company from the Dodge brothers’ widows for $146 million.1928: The Chrysler Corp. acquires the Dodge Brothers Co. on July 30 for $170 million.1930: Factory radio is offered.1934: An industry-fi rst automatic over-drive transmission is introduced.1939: The 25th Anniversary models, dubbed Luxury Liners, feature all-new fastback styling with an integrated trunk, headlights built into the fenders and a V-type windshield.1942: The government orders automakers to stop production of passenger cars in February to focus on the war effort. Over the course of World War II, Dodge’s Chicago plant builds 18,413 B-29 engines.1945: The fi rst post-war Dodges are introduced in the fall as 1946 models (though basically refreshed ’42 models).1946: The 5 millionth Dodge is produced.1950: The Dodge Wayfayer gets a fancy new feature: roll-up windows. The fi rst Dodge to race in a NASCAR race also happens this year.1952: The “Red Ram” HEMI engine – the fi rst V8 in a Dodge – is introduced.1954: A Dodge convertible paces the Indianapolis 500 – and 701 replicas of the car are produced.1956: An under-dash record player – the “Hi-Way Hi-Fi” – is the fi rst in-car entertainment system.1957: Large fi ns now are a major

feature on all Dodge models.1966: The Dodge Charger is introduced. The fastback style is used just in 1966 and 1967, giving way to “Coke-bottle” styling in 1968.1970: The Dodge Challenger debuts.1974: Richard Petty wins the Daytona 500 in a Charger.1981: The Dodge Aries K-car is introduced. The all-new compact/midsize car would prop up sales for the Chrysler Corp. for years.1984: Dubbed the “Magic Wagon,” the revolutionary Dodge Caravan minivan is introduced.1988: The Dodge Dynasty is introduced and, with seating for six and V6 power, becomes the company’s best-seller.1990: Driver-side airbags are standard on all Dodge vehicles, an industry fi rst.1992: The Dodge Viper, a concept of which paced the Indy 500 a year prior, now is for sale to the general public. It features an 8-liter, 400hp V10 engine.1993: The Ram line of trucks is redesigned for the 1994 model year and is a major success during the ’90s.1994: The Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan feature an integrated child-safety seat, a minivan fi rst.1995: The Neon is introduced.1996: More innovation on the Caravan: dual-sliding doors.

1998: The Durango, Dodge’s SUV debut, is introduced, with V8 power and seating for seven.2002: A new Ram 1500 truck is introduced.2005: Dodge introduces the exclusive “Stow ‘n Go” seating and storage system on the Grand Caravan, where the second- and third-row seats fold into the fl oor.2006: The Charger nameplate, dropped in 1987, is resurrected, marking the return of a historic Dodge model.2008: The Challenger, dropped in 1974, is reintroduced in an SRT8 Trim, which features a 6.1-liter HEMI V8 with 425hp.2011: As part of one of its largest product renaissances Dodge introduces six all-new or completely redesigned vehicles across a few months in late 2010 and early 2011, including an all-new Durango and Charger and updated Challenger, Avenger, Grand Caravan and Journey.2012: The all-new Dodge Dart is revealed, the fi rst Dodge built off the new Compact US Wide Fiat architecture.2013: 30th Anniversary edition models of the Grand Caravan are released. At the LA Auto Show, the 100th Anniversary of Dodge is celebrated with 100th Anniversary models of the Charger and Challenger.2014: Dodge celebrates its 100th anniversary July 1.

CELEBRATE DODGE’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY WITH SPECIAL PRICING ON THESE NEW VEHICLES!

MUSCLE CARSIn 1966, Dodge’s famed 426-cubic-inch HEMI V8 fi nally becomes

available in Dodge mid-size cars, including the brand-new Charger, an upscale two-door coupe with performance (all Chargers packed a V8) to match its sporty looks. Two years later Dodge launches the “Scat Pack,” which puts its four core muscle models – the newly designed Charger R/T, Coronet R/T, Dart GTS and the Super Bee – under a single banner in national campaigns; its bee logo was the namesake of the bumblebee stripes each model sported on the rear fenders. The Scat Pack all boasted running 14 seconds or quicker in the quarter-mile. A pony car fi nally joined the mix for the 1970 model year with the intro of the Challenger R/T, which offered six different and distinct models and nine engine options. Eventually models were dropped, and the Charger came and went over the years before being brought back to Dodge’s lineup in 2006, followed by the Challenger in 2008 and the Dart in 2012. To celebrate the Scat Pack’s 45th anniversary in 2013, Dodge reintroduced the Scat Pack Club and for 2014 offered Scat Pack Performance Stage Kits on the Challenger and Charger 5.7-liter HEMI and the Dart 2.4-liter Tigershark.

MINIVANSThere is perhaps no greater symbol of Dodge’s innovation than

the minivan, a segment Dodge created when in 1984 it introduced the Caravan. Dubbed the “Magic Wagon,” Dodge’s goal was to get the most interior space into the smallest possible form – something not provided by spacious but large station wagons. The unibody design allowed for reductions in height and weight, and the fl at, low fl oor gave passenger a comfortable interior and increased cargo space. A longer wheelbase Grand Caravan was added in 1987. Over the years it has continued to be the leader in the segment it invented, incorporating several industry fi rst features, including driver-side airbag and child safety locks (1991), integrated child safety seat (1993), standard passenger-side airbags (1994), dual-sliding doors (1996) and Stow ‘n Go Seating (2005). TRUCKS

Trucks have been a big part of Dodge’s history from its early days. Just three years after introducing their fi rst car, Dodge in 1917 began producing trucks for both civilian and military use. At the onset of World War II, the government ordered automakers to stop producing passenger cars – but not trucks. Dodge trucks were in great demand during this time for ambulances and general transportation. Thousands of Dodge Weapons Carrier trucks also were made for the war effort during this time. The Power Wagon and B, C and D series trucks are a few of the models that appear over the next few decades, but it’s not till 1981 that Dodge fi rst uses the Ram name on its pickup trucks, taking its name form the from the ram hood ornament used by Dodge in the ’30s. Despite its heavy-duty performance, the Ram wasn’t a huge success till iconic redesign for the 1994 model year, which was named Motor Trend’s “Truck of the Year” and took sales from less than 100,000 in 1993 to nearly a half-million by 1996. In fact, the Ram name became so iconic and successful in and of itself that in 2010 Ram Trucks became its own division of the Chrysler Group, with no pickup trucks carrying the Dodge tag.
