Dear 4-H Families,
4-H 2018 is in full swing! I am guessing many of you went to your club meeting recently
and received your project materials and you are starting to think about the 4-H year and
your project work. As you do that, it is a great time for you to think about what you want
to do and learn this year.
4-H strives to teach youth how to set and achieve goals because this is a life skill that can
have a huge impact on their futures. What is a goal? A goal is what you want to do and
learn. It’s like having a road map that helps you decide how to get to where you want to
go.
To be successful, set goals that:
· Are specific (not too general or broad)
· Meet your needs and interests
· Emphasize what you want to learn
· Provide you an opportunity for achievement
· Can be accomplished in a reasonable amount of time with the resources
available to you
· Show progress over previous years
A goal has 3 parts: Action, Result, and Time.
· The action is how you are going to do it.
· The result is what you will do.
· The time is when you plan to have it done.
Now is a GREAT time to set your 4-H project goals! Write down what you want to learn
in your projects and share your goals with your project leaders. While you’re at it, record
your goals on the “Project Story” page for your record book

The UW-Extension Office is located on the first floor of the

the 15th of each month. Drop off your information or e-mail it to
Marie Witzel or Bonnie Borden. Your newsletter is your source
for all 4-H program and event information.

and November/December are joint issues) and are also posted on

Event Registrations Registering for 4-H events, workshops, and activities is easy.
Dodge County uses SignUp Genius, Google Forms, email, and
other convenient links to register for events that do not require a

the state with the goal of recruiting new members. The site is
designed to give potential members, parents, and volunteers a
brief overview of 4-H Community Club programs, while provid-

Host an International Student this Summer!
Each summer Wisconsin families have the opportunity to host
a youth from Japan, Korea, Norway/Finland, Mexico, Costa
Rica, or Argentina for one month. Times vary throughout the
summer depending on the program. You could be a host!
If you are between 10-18 years old and want to take part in a
two to four week program that will stay with you for a lifetime,
apply now!
Chaperone hosts also needed for two week periods during July-
August. Applications are due by February 1 or till all delegates
are assigned.

Achievers (Avery Panetti) Club members will decorate Valen-
tine’s Day cookies for community members.
Astico Perseverance (Emma Paulson) December will be ice
skating at Fireman’s Park in Columbus. We are also doing the
Candlelight Hike at the Horicon Marsh on Saturday, January
20th.
Hyland Prairie (Lexi Bird) Vivian Lichty helped with the tree
decorating at the Juneau Library with ornaments with village
pieces under the tree. The club decided to have sledding, bon-
fires and food in either January or February.
Portland Boosters (Asher Frank) Mini Golf at the library will
be held in January. Club members talked about their experience
Christmas caroling. Club will go ice skating in January.
Junior Fair Book Orders Due February 16
The 4-H Leaders Executive Board approved printing Dodge
County Junior Fair Books for clubs, the same as last year.
Books are $5 each. Hard copies of the Junior Fairbook must be
ordered through your club’s general leader only. Deadline for
clubs to order is February 16.

Family Learning Day
Join us for the 4-H Family Learning Day! A day of family fun
and education. 4-H volunteers, businesses, and community mem-
bers teach a variety of sessions on topics related to 4-H projects
and other learning opportunities.

Learning Day on February 25 and/or April 1.
Some of the duties we need help with include:

Does your club apply for Dairy Promotion Funds or know
what they are?
The Dodge County Dairy Promotion Committee are accepting
requests for funding for 4-H Club Dairy Promotion activities. We
are looking for any or all clubs to request funds. Any club can
request funding even if you don't have a dairy project in your
club!
Clubs must submit reports at the end of the 4-H year and then are
also eligible for more awards. Attendance at the Dairy Promotion
session at Family Learning Day is a requirement to request funds.

site or see your club’s general leader for more infor-
mation.

All proceeds go towards improvements in the large animal build-
ings at the Dodge County Fairgrounds starting with swine pens.
MAS Committee Pig Pen Fundraiser Hey, have you seen this little piggy running
around Dodge County? He really needs a pen
and you could help get him one!
The Dodge County Meat Animal Sale Committee
is selling t-shirts to help raise money to finish the Swine Barn
Pen Project. All shirts are grey with black lettering. The cost of
each t-shirt is $15.00 for sizes youth thru XL. If you need a 2X
or larger size the cost of the shirt is $17.00. The long sleeve shirts
are selling for $20.00 (all sizes).
This is not the only way you can support this project. Families
and clubs can donate $450 to cover the cost of a pen. We will
have a plaque with your Club or Family name on it in the Swine
Barn starting in 2018.

WI 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will award more than
$10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students
pursuing higher education in 2018.
To be eligible students must have been a Wisconsin 4-H
member for at least one year; have a grade point average of at
least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled or planning to enroll at a
university, college or technical school during the 2018-2019
academic school year.
Cover letters, resumes and project lists (a total of three pages)
and one photo must be received by the Wisconsin 4-H
Foundation on or before March 15, 2018. All documents must
be attachments to the email. For a copy of the application

WI State Fair Dairy Promotion Board Scholarship The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board is offering
$1,000 scholarships to students that will be 3rd or 4th year
college students during the 2018-19 academic year. Additional
$1,000 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors that
will be first-year college students during the 2018-19 academic
year. Students studying in a two-year program are also
encouraged to apply.
All applicants are required to submit an application
electronically no later than MARCH 23, 2018.

Patricia Hahn Legacy Scholarship Dodge County 4-H is pleased to announce a $1,000 Patricia
Hahn Legacy Dodge County 4-H Scholarship to be awarded in
2018. One scholarship for the amount of $1,000. The recipient
of this scholarship, is not eligible to receive any other Dodge
County 4-H Scholarship.
Eligibility: Any Dodge County 4-H member in good standing
who is a 2018 graduating high school senior may apply.
Applicant must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an
undergraduate college, university, or technical school for the
2018 – 2019 school year and working toward a degree.
Application Deadline: All application forms and letter s of
recommendation should be submitted together, and must be
received in the Dodge County 4-H Extension Office, 127 East
Oak Street, Juneau, WI 53039 by 4:30 p.m. March 1, 2018.

in the previous year. Applicant must be enrolled or planning to
enroll in an undergraduate college, university, or technical
school for the 2018 – 2019 school year and working toward a
degree.

United Cooperative Scholarships
United Cooperative's Scholarship Program awards $1,000
scholarships to 40-50 high school seniors and current college/
technical school students who are continuing their full-time
education in 2018-2019.
To be eligible:
Student or parent must be one of United Cooperative’s
16,000+ active patron members;
Student must plan to attend (or be currently enrolled in) an
accredited college, university, or technical school;
Student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above on a 4.0
scale.
At least 10 of the scholarships will be awarded to students ma-
joring in an agricultural field, at least 10 will be awarded to stu-
dents attending a technical school, and at least 10 will be award-
ed to current college or technical school students who are con-
tinuing their full-time education in 2018-2019. The remainder
of the scholarships are open to all majors. Previous United Co-
operative scholarship award winners are not eligible to apply
for the college or technical school continuing education
awards.

Scholarship Opportunities for
Dodge County Dairy Youth Available to eligible 4-H or FFA Dodge County Fair
Dairy Exhibitors
Juneau, Wisconsin – Seven scholarships, three for $1,000 and
four for $500, are available to Dodge County junior dairy pro-
ject youth who have been enrolled in 4-H, FFA or a junior breed
organization for at least the past three years. Youth must also
have exhibited dairy cattle at the Dodge County Fair.
Applicants must be accepted as a full-time student at an accred-
ited university, college or vocational-technical institute for a
degree program or short-course program.
Application deadline is June 1. Applications are available at

SEEKING: 4-H Summer Intern
Applications are open for one Dodge County Summer 4-H In-
tern to work mid-May through August. Applicants should have
at least two years of college and a car. 4-H experience is prefer-
able. Preferred age of 21 years old.

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN IN 4HONLINE FOR BOTH SESSIONS!
Session 1: March 10-11, 2018 OR
Session 2: April 21-22, 2018 Camp Counselor training is an excellent opportunity for coun-selors, adult volunteers, and 4-H staff alike to come together in collaboration to prepare youth to excel in their summer camp counselor role. This weekend is for both beginning counselors (as participants), experienced counselors (as leaders), adult volunteers, and 4-H staff.
All participants & adult volunteers arrive Saturday morning
Check-in: Begins at 9:15am on Saturday for participants and adult chaperones Lodging: Participants and adult chaperones will stay in cabins on Saturday night. Lodging is available Friday night at no addi-tional cost.
Meals: Meals are part of the conference fee and start at lunch on Saturday through lunch on Sunday.
Schedule: Training activities run Saturday all day and evening through Sunday afternoon, with a closing ceremony at 1:30 pm. The schedule is not yet available. Finalized schedule will be available on this page and distributed to participants. Costs: Registration for 2018 is anticipated to be $250. With added fees for seminars and bus fare.

Wisconsin 4-H & Youth Conference is a three and a half day Statewide Educational Experience. Youth from all over
Wisconsin come to Madison, Wisconsin for educational seminars, assemblies, speakers, exploration, and fun on the UW-
Madison campus! Youth Conference is made possible by contributions from our State Teams (Wisconsin Leadership
Council, Drama Company, Art Team, and Communications team), 4-H staff from across the state, and a planning com-

4-H Art Beat is the introductory program for Wisconsin 4-H
Communication Arts and was created for 4-H members in
grades 3-5, their parents and leaders.
Art Beat! provides an opportunity for youth and their parents to
experience five different art forms in a camping environment at
Camp Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells. Art Beat! track
leaders are older 4-H Youth, 4-H Leaders and staff.
Adult Leader/Chaperone Needs:

ANY SUBJECT. It can be related to 4-H, Special Emphasis

selection, prose or poetry. List ALL ages on registration
form. The selection is NOT to be memorized.
4. STORYTELLING Select/wr ite story; memor ize it; tell
it.
5. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH Draw 3 subjects the
evening of the Speaking Contest, choose one, prepare
original speech. 30 minutes preparation is allowed.

Demonstration & Illustrated Talk Contest

Demonstrations are more showing and doing. Illustrated
Talks rely more on char ts, pictures, and descr iption. For
topic ideas, check with your general leader or the 4-H Office.
Many of you have given brief demonstrations or talks at 4-H
meetings. Do not use school presentations! Just polish up the
presentation. Please, no product labels.
Divisions and Time guidelines
Grade 1-3 5 minutes or less
Grades 4-5-6 6 minutes or less
Grades 7-8-9 5-8 minutes
Grades 10 & up 5-8 minutes
There is no minimum time limit, but demonstrators are set at
least 4 minutes. Participants will be judged on: Clear, pleasant
voice/self confidence, enthusiasm/poise, appearance/posture,
appropriate introduction, accurate information, visual aids,
orderly progression, summarization, adequate preparation,
interesting subject, purpose accomplished. Easels will be
provided.
Team Demonstrations (2 members) may also be given. In a
team demonstration the grade division is that of the older
member. Time guidelines are determined by older member.
Participants will be divided by grade to give demonstration. Top
demonstrators in each grade group will be selected. (This is like
the Speaking Contest.) Upon completion of the contest, ribbons
will be awarded and top demonstrators will be announced. No
reminder letters are sent! State Fair delegates (Grade 7 &
up) will be selected.

UW Madison Poultry Lab Tour—March 3rd The Dodge County Poultry Project will be touring the UW-
Madison Poultry Lab on March 3, 2018 at 10 a.m. The tour and
presentation by Ron Kean from the UW-Madison Poultry lab,
which will include a necropsy of a chicken, will last approxi-
mately 2 hours.
Following the tour, attendees will have the option of going to
Babcock Hall for lunch and ice cream. If there is enough inter-
est, participants will have the option of joining a 20 minute
guided observation of the Babcock Hall Dairy plant from the
2nd story observation deck at 1:30 p.m.
All members attending the tour and presentation by Ron Kean
will receive 2 points on their Blue Ribbon Auction sheet.
No transportation will be provided but carpooling may be avail-

Dodge County Junior Fair Poultry Requirements
In order to be eligible to SHOW any poultry, exhibitors MUST:
Attend 2 County Project Meetings and have signatures on
the Dodge County Small Animal Meeting Attendance Form.
Eligible meetings are listed above.
Have a Premise ID Number and proper Pullorum Typhoid
testing papers for their poultry.
Complete and submit online fair entry by June 10, 2018.
In order to be eligible to SELL at the Small Animal Auction,
exhibitors MUST:
Receive a blue ribbon at the Dodge County Fair Poultry
show on the poultry entry they wish to sell. Have 9 points earned with signatures on the Poultry Poultry
Activity Record Card. *Please note: FFA advisors may give
points for poultry-related activities performed through FFA.
Please include brief description of activity and contact infor-
mation for further questions so that points can be approved
by county leader. Please use your discretion to follow the
establish point system on the record form. Buyers at the
auction are paying far more than market value of the ani-
mals because they are supporting the extra efforts put forth
by the youth in the project. This requirement is meant to
honor their generosity.

requirements.

All youth who exhibit swine at the Dodge County Fair will be
required to complete YQCA training and it is highly encouraged
for members of all other livestock species (YQCA will count as
an educational point).
Wisconsin State Fair and other national exhibitions will require
certification in YQCA for participation for 2018 events and be-
yond for all youth exhibitors that compete at state fair in the fol-
lowing species: beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, poultry and rab-
bits.

ATTENTION: ALL BEEF, SHEEP, & SWINE
PROJECT MEMBERS intending to exhibit and
auction market project animals at the
Dodge County Junior Fair…
In 2018, there will be no “weigh-ins” to identify your market
animals for the Dodge County Fair. Like last year, tags will be
issued to families after being requested from the UW-Extension
office.
Families will need to request DNA packets from the Wisconsin
Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC). The cost is $10
per head. After tagging is completed and the WLIC Documen-
tation Form has been completed, mail back to the WLIC by the
deadlines set forth by the MAS Committee and outlined in the
beef, sheep or swine letters that project youth will receive. No
pictures are required.
February is Beef Identification. Swine and Sheep information
will be forth coming. Information may also be found on the
Dodge County UW-Extension website.
FFA Advisors will be notified and will be expected to inform
youth affected in their respective chapters.

MAS Project Member Activity Card
(Orange Card)
There has been some confusion regarding the educational
points required by the MAS committee for the education point
card. “4” points are required and can be obtained by attending
educational livestock events. AT LEAST 2 of the points need
to be gotten at a county or state educational event. For some
youth who have no means to have “local club” learning events,
it is always possible to have all 4 or more points obtained from
county or state events.
If an “out of county” event is where a point will be obtained,
use the back of the card to explain the event AND obtain a
signature that can be identified so a call may be given if the
committee has questions.
No educational event may give a youth more than 1
educational points (even if other county’s youth obtain 2+
points for such an event).
Youth attending college may obtain a point for agricultural
events attended by speaking with obtaining MAS committee
approval.

The Dairy Youth Advisory Committee has created an
educational card to encourage Dairy project members in their
quest to improve dairy knowledge and skills. Download your

Completing the requirements will qualify dairy youth for
exhibiting at the Wisconsin State Fair AND for being eligible
to qualify for Dairy Recognition Auction lots.
The intention for creating new card is to encourage more Dairy
youth project members to participate and advance their learning
at the many opportunities which have been created by willing
volunteers.

WGBA Sponsors Essay Calf Contest
One fortunate Wisconsin youth will be the recipient of a regis-
tered Guernsey calf during the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders’
Association (WGBA) annual convention on March 9-10th at the
Cranberry Country Lodge in Tomah. This calf will be awarded
to the youth who writes the best essay on their choice of two
topics: (1) “What a Guernsey calf would mean to me” or (2)
“The Guernsey cow is important to me because…”
Essays are currently being accepted for this 20th annual contest.
Entrants do not need to have a Guernsey background or be from

Contest guidelines include:
Essay should be a minimum of 250 words on the topic of “what
a Guernsey calf would mean to me” or the topic “the Guernsey
cow is important to me because…”
Contest is open to Wisconsin youth ages 10-17
Entrant should include plans for housing, responsibilities or
plans for caring for the calf and show opportunities in the essay
Winner must agree to exhibit the calf at shows and give a report
on the calf at the WGBA annual meeting after winning
Winner must be willing to join the Wisconsin Junior Guernsey
Breeders’ Association for a one time fee of $15.00.

Deadline: March 23, 2017 This contest is in its 87th year and has entries from more than
800 4-H clubs. Prizes are $100-$75-$50-$25. Lomira Clover

Welcome to the 87th annual Hoard’s Dairyman Cow Judging
Contest. You and your family, students or club members are
invited to join the thousands of others who participate in this
fun and educational picture judging contest.
This interactive web-based portal contains all five classes, and
allows you to submit your entries online and receive your
scores by email at the completion of the contest.
Cash prizes and framed certificates are awarded to winning
individuals and groups. Also, each team member who is part of
a group entry is eligible for individual prizes.
Many of our colleagues use this contest to train dairy judging
teams during the winter months. It’s ideal for the classroom,
and students’ families will enjoy it, too. People may enter with
their chapter, club, college, co-op and also with their families.

Show Camp Cash!! The Meat Animal Sale Committee wishes to help support SIX
livestock project members in the growth of their project experi-
ences by offering $50 each toward the registration fee to attend
the annual Livestock Show Camp. The camp is traditionally on
Saturday & Sunday of the 3rd weekend in June at the WI State
Fair grounds and the cost has been $125.

2018 Wisconsin Junior Targhee
Sheep Association Starter Flock
The Wisconsin Junior Targhee Sheep
Association will again be giving away a
starter flock of three Targhee ewes in
2018 to a lucky Wisconsin youth.
Applicants must be aged 12 to 17 as of
January 1, 2018, must be a resident of
Wisconsin, and must not currently raise Targhee sheep. The win-
ner must also be eligible and agree to exhibit their animals at
both the 2018 Wisconsin State Fair open sheep show and Wis-
consin Junior State Fair sheep show.
The winner will receive a combination of ewe lambs, yearling
ewes and/or brood ewes, and take ownership of the animals be-
fore any 2018 State Fair entry deadlines.
Applications are available on-line at both the US Targhee Sheep
Association website (http://www.ustargheesheep.org/) and are
due no later than April 1, 2018.

New Testing Required for Swine Moving In & Out of WI
MADISON – Swine moving into and within Wisconsin will have
to meet new testing requirements beginning Feb. 1, State Veteri-
narian Dr. Paul McGraw announced.
The new requirements are intended to help control the spread of
two diseases: swine enteric corona virus disease, known as
SECD, and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, or
PRRS. Both have caused significant hardship in the swine indus-
try. Neither is a human health threat.
Like all animals, swine entering Wisconsin must be accompanied
by a certificate of veterinary inspection, or CVI, signed by a vet-
erinarian who has examined them in the past 30 days and found
them to be apparently healthy. In addition, the CVI must now
include:
A report showing that they came from a herd that has tested
negative for the two diseases in the past 90 days.
A veterinarian’s statement that the animals showed no signs
of either disease when they were examined.
A statement from the event veterinarian, if they came
through an out-of-state sale or exhibition where they were
mixed with swine from other herds, that all the herds tested
negative and that none showed signs of either disease.
Swine that don’t meet these requirements can enter Wisconsin
with a CVI and import permit from the Department of Agricul-
ture, Trade and Consumer Protection. However, they will be
quarantined until a Wisconsin veterinarian has developed a herd
plan addressing testing and biosecurity, and DATCP has ap-
proved the plan.
If the swine go directly to slaughter or to a veterinary clinic for
treatment, or if they are returning from an out-of-state veterinary
clinic, they do not need to be tested. Exhibitors who move swine
into and out of the state for fairs or other exhibitions must notify
DATCP. If their animals are potentially exposed to swine from
positive herds at the events, they will be quarantined on return
until they have a herd plan approved. They can get a herd plan
approved before leaving the state, which may avoid a quarantine.
Swine moving within Wisconsin must now also test negative for
PRRS and SECD within 90 days of movement, unless they’re
going to slaughter, either directly or after a terminal fair or
show.

NASCO to HOST Showing & Grooming Demonstrations Nasco will present its 32nd annual Showing & Grooming
Demonstrations on May 12, 2018. Industry Leaders will conduct
these educational demonstrations. Topics for discussion will in-
clude: animal selection, proper clipping techniques, choice of
grooming equipment and showmanship. Questions may be freely
asked during the demonstrations.
During each demonstration, door prizes will be given away and
each person attending will receive a valuable discount coupon,
which may be used at the Nasco Store.

request form with payment to WLIC. Make sure DNA and required paperwork is returned to WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair
identification postmark deadlines listed above.
How much will DNA and RFID identification cost? $15 per animal identified for required DNA and RFID tag identification. If
your animal has an existing 840 RFID ear tag you can purchase and submit a DNA envelope separately for $10. Be sure to list the
existing RFID ear tag number on the paperwork and DNA submission.
Will my County DNA and RFID tag qualify for Wisconsin State Fair? Wisconsin State Fair will accept all DNA and RFID sam-
ples submitted through WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark. Samples received after the Wisconsin
State Fair identification deadline postmark will be accepted; however, the animal associated with the samples will have limited State
Fair eligibility. Visit the WLIC website (www.wiid.org) to verify which counties are participating in the statewide DNA and RFID
identification program.
Should I notify Wisconsin State Fair that my animal has been DNA and RFID identified? You DO NOT have to notify Wis-
consin State Fair at time of identification. Wisconsin State Fair will receive all animal identification documentation from WLIC after
the Wisconsin State Fair DNA and RFID identification postmark deadlines. Potential exhibitors are required to submit their Fair en-
tries (online or paper) prior to the June entry deadlines by entering directly with Wisconsin State Fair. DNA and RFID identification
is NOT your entry to the Fair.
What if my County is not participating in the statewide DNA and RFID program? No problem! Request Wisconsin State Fair

and you compare to other countries in language, food,
religion, school, energy use, and other daily activities.
What can we learn from people in other countries?
Mary Crave has been involved with 4-H international pro-
grams for almost 40 years starting as a 4-H exchange par-
ticipant to Sri Lanka, as a group leader to several countries
with both 4-H members and volunteers, as a volunteer lead-
er, and now working with 4-H in Africa. Since her first ex-
change, she's been to more than 40 countries on several
continents and has traveled to
Africa almost 50 times!
Mary was an Extension agent
and specialist in Wisconsin for
40 years, has worked with
USDA programs in Africa, and
now works for extension inter-
national programs in other
states. She lives in Madison
when she's not running around

Advanced Cake Decorating (Session 4) Fee $6. Limit 15. Khandra Henderson and Noel Weber-Eedy. Participants will
learn how to make flowers and some advanced decorating techniques. Each participant will receive 3 tips and a flower
nail to take home. Children under 8 years old need an adult to accompany them.
Attracting Hummingbirds (Session 1) Fee $2. Limit 15. Chris Jacobs and Carol Shirk. Hummingbirds are a treat to
have in the garden. They play an important role as pollinators and are entertaining to watch. They can be quite feisty
when protecting their territory, are very acrobatic as they hover and dart up and down and even backwards, and can be
very vocal with their squeaky chirps and twitters. Hummingbirds are creatures of habit, they return about the same time
each year and will return to the same spot. Give them a reason to return to your garden year after year. Participants will
be able to make a hummingbird feeder to take home.
Bovine Genetics (Session 1) Dennis Gunst. What are the best bulls to use on your cows? Learn to interpret available
data from the sire summaries and bull stud catalogs. Dennis will cover dairy genetics and beef genetics. Counts for 1
point on Dairy Project or Livestock Project Member Activity Card.
Burlap Wreath (Session 4) Fee $4. Limit 10. Kris Rennhack. Learn how to make a Christmas or spring burlap wreath.
Kris will show you how to put the wreath together and how to add decorations using your choice of ribbon.
Cake Decorating Basics (session 3) Fee $6. Limit 15. Noel Weber-Eedy. Learn different techniques to cover cakes and
how to stabilize a layered and tiered cake. Each participant will receive their own Styrofoam mold to decorate and a dec-
orating bag with coupler, tip and icing scraper. Children under 8 years old need an adult to accompany.
Careers in Agriculture (Session 2) Char les Crave. “Let’s take a look at careers in agr iculture and how to get
there.” Counts for 1 point on Dairy Project or Livestock Project Member Activity Card.
Chocolate: From Cocoa Bean to Chocolate Bar (Session 3) Limit 25. Russell Tietz, Director of Technical Sales for
Clasen Quality Chocolate, Madison. Come and learn about the science of processing, manufacturing and application of
Chocolate. Learning and tasting are done in this session.
Cloverbud/Exploring Activity (Session 1) Jan Zander . Make a sock puppet. If you have a colorful, fun sock you
want to use bring it along or use one that will be provided.
Composition/Intro to Photography (Session 3) Anne Rosenau. Join the fun while learning some fundamental skills
that will help you become a photographer. For all ages and experience levels. Please bring your camera, even if it is your
phone or tablet! (Camera not required for attendance.)
Country Sign (Session 1) Fee $1 Limit 15. Rae Geb. Make a country sign to hang in your favorite room. Paint on a
piece of wood and spray with varnish. Younger members will need to have an adult with them.
Crime, Cops and Clues (Session 1, 2) Mike Beisbier , Detective Water town Police Dept. The Science behind police
investigations. Detective Beisbier from Watertown PD will discuss current evidence collection and processing trends,
and how investigation duties differ from uniformed officers’ duties.
Dog Safety (Session 2) Limit 25. Veronica Richards and Maria Richards. This is an interactive class. There will be a
dog safety presentation describing how to act around friendly dogs and what protective behaviors to use around strange
dogs. Participants will have the opportunity to practice with Badgerland Animal Reading and Comfort Companions
(BARCC) trained animal therapy teams. Participants younger than Cloverbuds need parent supervision.
Doves and Pigeons (Session 2) Chr is Krenke and Don Schwandt. Whether performing, showing or utility there’s a
bird for everyone. Bring your questions for answers. Counts for 1 point on your Small Animal Project cards.
Fun with Dairy Promotion (Session 3) Brenda Conley. Have you herd there is a new Dairy Ambassador for the
county? Do you promote dairy through your club or would like to know how you can do to promote dairy? Then this is

the session for you! Meet the new ambassador and learn different ways to promote dairy within your club or communi-
ty. Any club can do it even if you don't have anyone in the dairy project. Also learn about the funding that is available
to help your club with promoting dairy. (This session is a requirement if you want to request funds). We will also be
playing a fun dairy promoting game that you can use after the session with your club. If you have a smartphone or Ipad/
tablet you are encouraged to bring it to this session.
Go International with 4-H (Session 1) Mary T. Crave. This session will give an overview of 4-H international pro-
grams in Wisconsin from activities you can do at club meetings to how you can travel to other countries or host boys
and girls in your home and 4-H club.
Identifying Wisconsin Trees (Session 4) Steve Ziobro. Steve has 35 years of exper ience as a nurseryman and will
give a Power Point presentation on "How to Identify Wisconsin Trees." He will also have samples of leaves and twigs
and seeds to pass around, as well as a handout with a dichotomous key that he made to aid in tree identification.
Introduction to Martial Arts (Session 1, 2) Scott Krenz. This class is designed to offer a fun look into the wor ld of
martial arts training. The focus will be on building confidence, focus and discipline. Students will learn age appropriate
basic kicking, blocking, striking and self-defense skills in a fun safe environment. No experience necessary. Classes will
be taught by Black Belt Instructors from Martial Arts America.

Come to this class to learn healthy and fun snacks you can prep on the weekends to always have something to pack in
lunches and on the go. Snacks will be available to take home. Counts for 1 point on Dairy Project Activity Card.
Mystery of Meat, (Session 2) Amanda Young. Undress the Mystery of Meat. Learn about the types of beef, pork,
and lamb meat cuts and products. Calculate dressing percentages and see if your taste buds can tell the difference be-
tween meat types. Counts for 1 point on Livestock Activity Card.
Native American Artifacts (Session 4) Bob Krueger Rock River Archeological Society (RRAS). Native American
history will come alive when Bob shares his knowledge of Native American Indians and talk about the artifacts that he
has collected.
Plant Slant Cooking (Session 4) Fee $2. Limit 15. Janelle Wiebelhaus-Finger. Have you heard of Blue Zones Project?
This well-being initiative in Dodge County encourages you to eat more plants to help you live longer, better. Make tasty
and healthy plant-based dishes from soups to snacks and taste them too.
Play Ball! (Session 3 or 4) Mark Case and Jeff McKean. Join Mark and Jeff as they look forward to another ex-
citing season of baseball. They will share their love of the National Pastime with stories of nostalgia, memorabilia and
trivia. Bring your own ballpark memories to share along with the group.
PVC Fun Craft (Session 2) Fee $4. Jan Zander . Build a lounge chair for an 18 inch doll or small dog or cat.
Rabbits (Session 1) Bill Meyer . Learn about anatomy, body par ts and animal care with the Rabbit project.

Recycled Crafts (Session 4) Fee $1. Limit 10. Connie Alderden. Recycling is good for the environment and if you’re a
dedicated crafter, it can also save you money. Explore some ways to recycle common items that you have at home.
There will be examples for inspiration and we’ll also do a couple of make and takes. Bring a sharp paper cutting scissors
and have an apron or paint shirt handy for this workshop.
RoboSumo (Session 3 or 4) Limit 16, 3rd grade and up. Brian Lerwick and the Beaver Dam RoboHackerz Robotics
Team. Customize a robot to compete in a battle with another robot to see which robot can push the other out of the com-

petition ring. Participants will be introduced to the LEGO MindStorm platform and gain a basic understanding of robot
construction and programming.
Safe Bicycling Skills (Session 3) Dale Oestreich & Deb Vomhof. Dale and Deb from Water town Share the Road
will discuss Wisconsin bicycle laws, the importance of a proper bicycle ‘fit’ and bicycle safety; including proper attire,
lights and techniques. They will also discuss basic bicycle maintenance, different categories of bicycling, and infor-
mation about safe, fun trails and routes throughout Dodge County and surrounding area.
Sheep (Session 2) Jan Phillips and Josh Voigt. This is a discussion for new sheep members and will cover the
basic information needed to make this a successful year, and to be able to show at the Dodge County Fair. It is for all of
those questions the new exhibitor doesn't realize they need to ask. Counts for 1 point on Livestock Project Member Ac-
tivity Card.
Shoulder Bag (Double Session 1-2) Limit 10. Anna and Tara Schultz. We want to help you on your journey into suc-
cessful sewing! Want a quick fun bag that is safe to hold all your treasures with its zipper closure? This class is for
you. Learn basic sewing skills as you create a bag that will make you proud. Bring the following supplies: ½ yard den-
im, 1-yard cotton or nylon webbing for shoulder strap, 2- 12” zippers, thread, scissors, pins, cutting supplies, and your
sewing machine in good working order.
Smartphone Movie Making (Session 4) Karen Huismann and Jourdan Westenberg. Lights! Camera! Action! The
professional staff from Watertown TV will show you how to make a movie on your smartphone. From basic film mak-
ing techniques to special tips and shortcuts. Come to this hands-on workshop and you will walk out ready to direct your
own movie!
Stenciled Sign (Session 3) Fee $5. Limit 10. Connie Alderden. Wood signs are very popular and are a wonderful
way to add a rustic touch to your home. However, they can be expensive. In this workshop we’ll take a look at some
methods for creating your own wood signs and will stencil a project that you can use for your home. Bring an apron or
paint shirt for this workshop.
Swine Project for Beginners (Double Session 1-2) Eric Salmi. This is a beginner’s swine class. We will cover all the
required tools and material for showing. Along with the required paper work – start to finish. We will talk about pulling
DNA samples, ear tagging, taking pictures and suppling the county with the information they need. Also what to expect
at the fair – what happens play by play on each day. Counts for 1 point on Livestock Project Member Activity Card.
Tack It Up (Session 2) Bethany Cameron, Leslie Schreier and Kathryn Witzel. Cleaning, care and different kinds of
horse tack will be covered. This session counts as a meeting requirement for the Horse Project.
Trapping (Session 3) Ken Tietz. Ken will have his fur collection of all the different animals and a couple pictures
of some unique versions of a couple animals he has caught. He will also show many of different styles of traps and
what they are used for and how they are used. Also showing somewhat where and how you would place the different
traps. Ken will address any questions you have.
Trick Photography (Session 4) Minimum 8. Anne Rosenau. Have you ever wanted to bench press your buddies?
Nosh on a neighbor? Stomp on your sister? Sounds weird, right? You can learn how to make it LOOK like you’re doing
all that and more by attending Trick Photography. Use your creativity to fool the eye. So come scale a wall, be as limber
as a pretzel, and perform feats of strength you never thought possible. (Cameras recommended but not necessary.)
YQCA (Double Session 3-4) Fee $3 Amanda Young. Youth for the Quality Care of Animals replaces MAQA. For
all livestock members to learn about caring for their animal projects and insuring a quality food product. Required for
youth showing Beef, Dairy, Sheep, Swine, Goats, Rabbits or Poultry at the State Fair. Required for county fair swine
project members. Will additionally need to enroll for certification at http://yqca.org/ ($3 cost for in person training paid
to YQCA upon class enrollment). Counts for 1 point on Dairy, Livestock or Small Animal Project Member Activity
