A Note from our President

Digging in Dodge

Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858-1954) was a horticulturalist, botanist, educator, and co-founder of the American Society for Hor-ticultural Science. He is known as Ameri-ca’s “Father of Modern Horticulture” and worked to develop the Extension pro-gram at Cornell University in New York so that rural people could have access to natural studies. He once said, “A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy am-bitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.”

Dodge County Master Gardener Associ-ation is similar to the garden that Mr. Bai-ley describes. It requires patient labor and attention. It will not grow just to sat-isfy ambitions or fulfill good intentions, but will thrive because people expend effort on it. We have had to make some changes in the last few years, but all to move the organization forward so it can continue to grow and prosper.

This is the last note from me that you will receive as President. I have fulfilled the maximum number of terms allowed by our by-laws and must step aside. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve. I want to thank every member for their support and help. We are a great organ-ization that does mighty things. It is only going to get better.

I feel very confident in the newly elected Board. They are:

Diane Hemling, President. Diane has been a member for four years and has been active as the coordinator of various booths, educational presenter at schools,

and is also a Master Composter.

Lynn Stanton, Vice President. Lynn just completed the Level 1 training and is quite knowledgeable and ready to be-come actively involved in many aspects of the organization.

Jan Krause, Secretary. Jan continues in her second term as secretary. She has been a member for seven years. She has served on the Board in various ca-pacities, co-coordinates the annual bus trip, and has helped with many major projects.

Joan Loomis, Treasure. Joan has been a member for seven years. She works the plant sale, helps with educational presentations, and teaches young gar-deners as she helps at Rainbow Hos-pice.

Gae Bergmann, Record Keeper. Gae has been a member for seven years. She teaches gardening to low income housing residents, works booths, raises monarch butterflies, and is always a will-ing worker where there is a need.

Please join me in welcoming this out-standing group of people. Offer your support and help in every way you can. They will dedicate many hours to serving you and making this organization one of the best in the county if not the state.

Master Gardeners will be working on various projects in Dodge County this year. Projects are underway in Beaver Dam, Columbus, Fox Lake, Horicon, Hustisford, Juneau, Mayville, Reeseville, Watertown, and Wau-pun. Each project has a Master Gardener who coordinates the work. May 26 – Attracting and Raising Monarch Butterflies by Gae Bergmann. Gae Bergmann has been a

Master Gardener for nine years and has been raising Monarch butterflies for nearly all of that time. She has

raised more than 500 of these butterflies on her Fox Lake property. She has four varieties of milkweed plus

a variety of flowers planted to nourish them, which has resulted in her homestead being certified as a Mon-

arch Waystation. She will share the reasons it is essential to begin raising these beautiful insects, the life

stages of the butterfly, the procedures to follow for success, why it is necessary to plant milkweed, and how

each participant can become more involved.

June 23 – How Do I Manage Weeds in My Spaces by George Koepp. George Koepp, Columbia County UW-

Extension Agriculture Educator will discuss and share tips on dealing with weeds. He will help develop a plan

of attack to deal with weeds in the lawn, flower and vegetable gardens, and sidewalks and driveways.

George encourages people to use an integrated approach by using mechanical, biological, cultural/mulching,

and if all else fails, chemical weed control methods. George grew up on a farm and lived most of his life in

the eastern part of the Baraboo Bluffs, near Cascade Mountain in Portage. He taught High School Agriculture

and Biotechnology at Baraboo High School for 26 years and then joined the UW-Extension team in Columbia

County in August 2011.

July 28 – Tour of Kirschbaum Strawberry Acres, Beaver Dam by Stan Kirschbaum. Stan Kirschbaum owner/

operator of Kirschbaum Strawberry Acres (KSA) will give a tour of his farm. KSA started as a hobby farm on

County Road W between Beaver Dam and Juneau in 1980 with a 1/3 acre strawberry planting. It expanded

to its current location on Highway 151 with 15 acres of fruiting berries each year and about 40 acres of winter

rye for weed free berry mulch. What started as 99% u-pick has evolved into 50% u-pick and 50% already

picked strawberries, most which is sold as fresh production on the farm. Recently KSA joined with the only

licensed winery in Dodge County, Edwin Brix Vineyard in Juneau. The second bottling of Wild Stan’s Straw-

berry Wine was done August 24, 2015.

Stan is a 1970 graduate of Beaver Dam High School with a degree in Biology and a Chemistry Minor from

UW-Oshkosh. He is a member and past president of the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association and has

been growing strawberries since 1980.

Dodge County Master Gardener Associations Annual Bus Tour

This year’s bus tour is to Riverside International Friendship Gardens in La Crosse, WI.

A buffet lunch will be served on the La Crosse Queen Paddlewheel. More details and regis-

This conference will be set in the historically significant area of Wisconsin Dells, WI. Early explorers were

amazed at the majestic trees, narrow canyons, and stunning rock formations—still worth seeing today on a

boat trip or amphibious vehicle tour. Mid-September is the perfect time to visit—fall colors will be beautiful at

our conference headquarters, the Chula Vista Resort, located on the outskirts of Wisconsin Dells.

had to volunteer a minimum of 24 hours of volunteer service and complete at least 10 hours of continuing ed-

Dodge County Master Gardener Association has awarded two scholarships to two high school seniors who are planning a career in some area of horticulture. Nicole Wenzel from Mayville High School will receive a $1000.00 scholarship and Samantha Schmitt from Beaver Dam High School will receive a $500.00 scholar-ship for this coming school year.

These scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from any public high school, parochial high school or home school in Dodge County. The student must have applied to a two or four year accredited college or technical school that has a program leading to a degree or certification in the horticultural area. Careers may include, but are not limited to, teaching, plant pathology, agronomy, agricultural engineer, landscape contrac-tor, or landscape architect.

Being a Master Gardener is about becoming a VOLUNTEER with the University of Wisconsin-Extension to help educate the public about gardening and natural resources. It’s not about knowing everything about gardening. It’s about learning to ask the right questions and knowing how to look up infor-mation from appropriate resources. Being a Master Gardener is about helping deliver meaningful community programs to improve the well-being of individuals and communities, to protect natural resources, and to help keep fresh fruits and vegetables on the table. It’s about working in tandem with UW-Extension staff and other volunteers to make a difference in the places we live, learn, and work.
