Why are we here?● Gratitude: I’m so grateful that you’re all here. We’re here for a reason
● We all make jokes about unicorns and horses; they’re the same.
o The more I heard, the more I felt that these stories of transformation is
as heroic as anything you’d hear from Google, etc.
o Can we? yes.
● Should we do it? Yes, the business value
● Inexorability: five years from now, there will be a community that
continually is fixated on how to create high performing tech orgs
o it’s not about DevOps is important
o It’s not just about code and technical practices; it’s not just about
dollars and profit; I think there’s another reason that brings most of us
to the table
o Must we? Are we obligated to?
● This stuff is ever more important
Why are we here?
● How large, complex orgs transform from low > high is not well-understood
● 18 months ago, I was talking with Erez Nir, CTO, Mitchell (who is here)
o Lamenting is that all the stories we hear about are the unicorns?
o What are enterprise organizations doing?
● What do we do when there’s already technology support?
o This isn’t a problem of unicorns vs. horses
● What leaders are going to look for is fuel: fuel is in the discontent in this monster that we’ve
created; century of command/control birthed during Taylorism;
● Injustice that is being ameliorated
● It isn’t just Nathan, you have your own stories that match his. And that’s why this matters.
o As a profession, we’ve created a system of work that has created far from ideal outcomes
o Better for the business, better for people;
o That’s why this matters.
Why are we here?
● Accelearte the rate of adoption
● Increase the likelihood of those transofmration succeeding
o where every conversation you have over the enxt 3 days are about goals about tings
important to you, and that you’re the help you need.
o I’ve asked every speaker to say, “XXX”
o You’re surrouned by 500 people of the best people int he game; that you’ll have 3 days of
interactions w/people who have the same goals are, and you’re getting the help you need
to get from here to there.
● Technology case - Can it be done?
○ How are enterprising transforming? I don’t know. I kept asking
○ The more I heard, the more I felt that these stories of transformation is as heroic as
anything you’d hear from Google, etc.
● Business case - Should we do this?
○ We love talking CI/CD, but often how to describe to the business case to others is more
elusive.
○ I am also certain that these stories you’ll hear today & in the next 3 days, you’ll hear how
people leading these transfortions KNEW where the org needed to go, and did everything
they could to get the org there, often putting themselves in jeopardy
○ Survey of practice results
○ cust sat, organization wins in the marketplace
○ b/c we’re having our asses handed to us

○ One of the biggest surprises and most rewarding things about the Phoenix Project is
hearing the why?
● In manufacturing, everyone knows that inventory levels and cycle time matter.
● 3-5 years from now, everyone will know about the business impact of those measures on the IT
value stream
● 4x the productivity
● as you hear about these amazing transformations, you’ll be increasing convinced that you can
make the business case when you go home,

How can we make it so?

There are no such thing as nameless, faceless bureaucracies. Runs on its own, full of people trying to
do the right thing.
They’re all trying to do the right thing.
Of course, we all know that there is no better example of an organization that inspires innovation and
freedom than the U.S. Dept of Homeland Security.
