FROM THE PRESIDENTLooks like another great year ahead for ARF! We have begun production of our next calendar; tickets for our 2018 ARF Raffle are on sale and selling fast at our stalls and from [email protected]; the date is set for our highly popular Trivia Night on 23 September at Belconnen Labor Club, and our Instagram which began in October last year already has 500 followers.

Thank you to all the teams handling these projects, in particular the stalls team which include many ARF members always willing to give their time for the doggies. As always, our remarkable assessment teams working at Canberra (Domestic Animal Services), Queanbeyan, Yass, and Goulburn pounds have ensured that many beautiful dogs have been brought into care and are finding their forever homes.

In the lead up to the festive season we had an avalanche of generous donations—both money and doggy gear—from around the region, and we would like to say a HUGE thank you to all our donors.

Our very popular ARF magazine ChinWag is going from strength to strength with excellent feedback coming in from throughout the community. In this issue we look at Dog DNA—what is it and how does it work, Puppy Pre-School and why it’s so important, and the story of ex‑ARFer Cassidy.

We have lots of events and stalls coming up over the next few months. If you would like to help out at the Old Bus Depot Markets, Collector Pumpkin Festival, or any of our other stalls, please contact [email protected] for more information.

Interestingly, and just to throw another spanner in the works, there can be more than one sire to a litter, so half the litter may look nothing like the other half.

Earlier this year nine six-week old puppies were found at West Queanbeyan Vet—left around the back in a cardboard box. Once the puppies (including Quinn – image top) had been checked out, ARF stepped up to the plate and took eight of them into care; one being kept by a vet nurse. As the pups grew older it became clear to their carers that they had no idea what breed they were, or even what mix

DOG DNA

of breeds, and all we could safely say in their description was that they were medium to large and that was about it!

Once adopted, the pups’ owners stayed in contact, and Quinn’s owner decided to DNA her pup. With much anticipation, plenty of discussion took place on what the results would be, from German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, Labrador and Golden Retriever, to Border Collie and even Maremma!

And finally, we knew Quinn’s background – varied!

What’s in your mixed breed dog?

By Aine Dowling

Most of the pups and dogs that come into ARF care are of mixed breed. Some

can be more easily identified as they look like a particular breed, so we’re fairly confident if we say Jack Russell Terrier X or Staffy mix that there’s plenty of JRT or Staffy in the dog. But in others it’s almost impossible to tell what they are. Hence our often random descriptors such as Queanbeyan Quirky, Gorgeous Goulburn Special, or Canberra Cutie—indicating the pound from whence the dog came, and advising that we truly have no idea of the breed!

So where, and how, do you get a DNA test, and what will it tell you?

There are a number of places online where you can arrange a DNA test, but Quinn’s owner used Advance at www.advancepet.com.au. You order your test kit online and send the sample back to their laboratory. The DNA is then put through a computer which checks and considers all pedigree trees over the last three generations. Using information from over 200 breeds, varieties, and types from the database, each of the millions of combinations are

considered and the computer gives each a score representing a selected combination of breeds that match your dog’s data, and reveals the breeds detected in the dog’s DNA.

It also includes checklists of physical and behavioural traits associated with these breeds.

So where does this leave Quinn?

With five breeds narrowed down to her parents, Quinn can look like, and behave like, anyone of those five. For example, she may have the looks and traits of a Golden Retriever; happy-go-lucky, generally friendly, likes swimming, and may be food motivated. Or, she may lean towards the Australian Cattle Dog being active, energetic, love activities such as flyball or agility, show a tendency towards herding, or need lots of socialisation. Alternatively, she may show also signs of the other three dogs in her parentage; the Rottweiler, Staffy, and Bull Terrier.

But that’s not all …

There are five more breed traces that show as far back as Quinn’s grandparents including the Australian Kelpie, Shih Tzu, Pekingese, Jack Russell Terrier and Parson Russell Terrier—which apparently are different … who knew?

The DNA result also shows a predicted weight for Quinn as she grows to an adult—putting her between 20 and 34kgs—so at least our medium to large descriptor was fairly close! The results also include a list of diseases/illnesses inherent in the various breeds that make up her DNA.

So now we know—more or less—where Quinn comes from, however, the same may not be said for all her siblings. As mentioned earlier, there may be more than one sire to the litter, so the only way to know for sure would be to have a DNA test on each individual pup.

BOOK REVIEWSBy Aine Dowling

In this issue we’re reviewing three books about dogs lost and dogs found—ones who lose their family and ones who have no family. Two children’s books provided by Carol Anderson are suitable for pre‑school to early primary readers. The third book is for older children or adults, and tells the story of a lost pup who manages to survive by himself through a cold northern winter before he finds his home.

MUTT DOGStephen Michael

Mutt Dog lives on the streets, owned by no‑one, finding food and shelter where he can, and looking every night for a new dry place to sleep. One evening he finds a half-way house, where people were looking for food and shelter—just like him. So he stayed for the night. Could the shelter help him as they helped the people? Will Mutt Dog find his home? This is a lovely little story with gorgeous water colour drawings and is ideal for pre or early readers.

Mutt Dog by Stephen Michael King, and published by Scholastic Australia 2004. Available from Amazon in paperback only.

POOKACarol Chataway

Pooka is found on a doorstep and everyone falls in love with her. But Grandad is not so sure… ‘Someone is missing her,’ he says. So they go looking for her family. Each day they looked and each day they fell more in love with Pooka and worried that one day someone would come to claim her. And one day—they did. This little book tells the story of love and loss, and then more love. Written by Carol Chataway with soft pencil and water colour illustrations by Nina Rycroft, this gentle book is perfect for early primary readers. Published by Working Title Press 2012 and available from Harper Collins.

THE DOGKerstin Ekman

In the heart of the Swedish countryside a young Husky pup leaves the warmth and comfort of the cabin to follow his mother and Master into the woods. Lost, cold and hungry, the book tells the story of the puppy’s survival through the winter; he must learn to fend for himself and outwit competitors and prey. To survive, the puppy himself becomes wild, trusting no human and fighting the hunting dogs entering his territory. One man, a hunter, is intrigued by the dog and endeavours to gain his trust by bringing him food, and rekindle memories of his once domesticated past.

With little dialogue, the story is told by the dog in the third person, and sensitively explores the lost relationship of trust and friendship between the dog and man.

Kerstin Ekman (Author); Linda Schenck (Translator), Sphere 2009. Available from Amazon in Kindle, Paperback, and Hard cover.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Compiled by Lauren Canellis

HAVE YOU ADOPTED AN ARFER? Where are they now? is about ex-ARFers who have been adopted into their forever homes. This is a regular inclusion in ChinWag and we would love to hear from ARF owners wherever you are—in Australia or overseas—to let us know how your new best friend is getting on. They could have been adopted last month or some years ago—we don’t mind! For more information contact [email protected]

CINDY FROM KATECindy is one very spoilt puppy. While I am at work she spends the day at Nanny and Poppy’s house with her sister, Lili, a Maltese Shih Tzu X. Cindy loves to sleep in, lie in the sun and have cuddles and kisses. She also loves sitting at the front door watching the dogs walk by and she enjoys going for walks, car rides and sitting at cafes. Cindy has been through her fair share of health problems. Late last year she was in and out of the vets but beat the odds and survived. A little fighter from day one! She is now 13 and half years old and celebrated her 13th birthday with a party and was showered with treats.

I am so lucky to have her—thank you ARF.

TASHA FROM CAITLINTasha, the English Setter, was adopted at the end of September 2027 and has been spoilt rotten ever since!

She loves running free, meeting other doggos, napping and playing with her favourite toy, Donk the donkey.

Tasha has been lots of fun to train and is a very fast learner. She has a great nose and is fantastic at finding and sniffing games.

We are so grateful to Tess and ARF for bringing Tasha into our lives. She is a real cuddle monster from the moment she wakes up to the time she falls asleep and loves nothing more than being carried like a baby in her Daddy's arms.

TED (FORMERLY LUI) FROM LOUISETed joined our family in November 2017. He’s a laid back guy who loves nothing more than a good play session and a lot of naps—your typical puppy! His favourite activity is definitely swimming; he’s now a regular at Lake Ginninderra, and Uriarra Crossing, and just had his first visit to the coast.

Ted recently graduated from Puppy Preschool where he did an exceptional job of promoting rescue by charming every human there with his sweet nature. Those floofy ears didn’t hurt either… He’s now attending Doggy Daycare twice a week and loves hanging out with the team at Pups4Fun. He’s also become best friends with one of our rescue cats, Frank.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity we’ve been given to be Ted’s family. We wouldn’t be without him now, the cat included!

*Ted is also one of the nine puppies from West Queanbeyan Pound—see Quinn DNA

KATY FROM LIZKaty joined us in July last year, and from the very first day, everyone felt that she was meant to be with us, although it took Katy a couple of days to feel the same way. With gentle encouragement, lots of love and patience, Katy settled in well and now has us all trained to her liking.

One of the first things we noticed about Katy on her ARF profile was how much she loved to go for a walk. This has not changed! Katy’s excitement leading up to her walk, truly knows no bounds – between dancing on her back legs and bouncing off the furniture, she can barely stand still long enough to have her harness fitted! It’s hard to believe that she is 11 years old.

Her favourite spot during the day is on top of the lounge in the front window where she can keep an eye on the neighbourhood, but at night she can often be found under the doona with her 15 year old human brother. Katy has become great friends with her neighbour’s dog, Charlie, who shares her passion for neighbourhood watching, squeaky toys and digging.

We would like to thank ARF, especially Narida, for bringing Katy into our lives. We love her so much, and it feels like she has always been a part of their family.

MATILDA FROM JACKIEWe first saw Matilda (Tilly for short) on the ARF Facebook page. She was left in the front pen of the Queanbeyan pound and her previous owner was not contactable. Therefore nobody knew much about her history. When we went to see her she was very distressed at the pound and was barking a lot, although very friendly, and when we took Tilly for a short walk out of the pound we instantly knew Tilly was the one. She was very sweet and just wanted someone to love her. The first six months were very difficult and a lot of work. Tilly wasn’t desexed so that was the first thing that was sorted out. She also wasn’t toilet/house‑trained, didn’t know how to walk on the lead, barked for attention constantly, would pace around the house and not settle until it was bed-time; she was aggressive towards other dogs and was a very scared and anxious little girl. We took her to obedience training for a few months, and she passed beginners level as she was very easy to train but she still remained quite aggressive and distressed around other dogs.Twenty months later, and now two

Little Pandi is doing so well. He’s really happy and spends all day wagging his tail around the house being cute. He and Zig, his fur sibling, are getting on fine too. Panda visited friends recently with his new family and by the end of the visit he was accepting little pats from them!

He makes his us so very happy and he continues to be such a silly little sausage.

years old, Tilly is a very different dog—happy with other dogs, house trained, and no barking!

Tilly is really settled now and enjoys watching TV with us on her comfortable dog bed. She has been on her first trip to the beach and loved jumping through the waves. Her favourite game is catching the tennis ball; she can’t get enough of it and does the most amazing flips in the air to catch it. But all in all Tilly is very loyal, intelligent, cheeky and a loving companion and we are so happy to have rescued her.

PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL 101SOCIALISATION

Congratulations! You’ve got your new puppy. Where to now …

The majority of dogs coming into ARF care are from local and regional pounds, and

it’s often sad to see some of the gorgeous dogs, who, with just a bit of training, need not necessarily be labelled ‘uncontrollable’, ‘anti-social’, or just ‘a bad dog’. Few dogs are inherently ‘bad’; granted, time spent in a pound may exacerbate underlying anxiety and present as fear and nervousness in the dog. But, generally, the majority of dogs, once out of the pound environment, will thrive with the correct training and socialisation.

Socialisation is not just your dog being social with dogs and people. Correct socialisation is critical in determining how your puppy will cope with new and novel situations as an adult. Dogs that have received sound socialisation between 6 – 16 weeks are usually well adjusted and less likely to experience behaviour problems and anxiety. Young pups are keen to learn, and basic training during this critical period is usually retained permanently. It’s therefore important that you provide as many

positive experiences, including new people, sights and sounds, as soon as possible, and in a comforting, controlled, and non-threatening environment. Care should be taken with socialisation until your puppy is fully vaccinated.

There are a number of specific things you should look at when socialising your new pup including: The VET—we’ve put this first, bold and in upper case because you would be amazed how many dogs are freaked out by a vet visit. If your pup visits the vet on a regular basis (between treatments) for a weigh-in, pats and treats, they will learn to enjoy their visits in the future, and be less ‘freaked’ by the poking and prodding that comes later.

Other good places you can take your pup to include markets, cafés, and shopping centres. Many cafés in Canberra are now dog friendly and you can do some mat training with your pup at the same time. Remember, until your pup has received its second vaccination, outdoor areas should be avoided unless the pup is held or placed on their mat. Short visits are best in the early days. Once your puppy is fully vaccinated, slow and controlled introduction to other pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, livestock etc., can take place. Socialisation does not mean a free-for-all at the dog park!

There are a number of Puppy Beginner Training Classes and day care centres in Canberra that offer puppy pre‑school type training including socialisation, and introduction to open umbrellas, bikes, skateboards and prams, and

range of different people and dogs. They also teach loose lead walking, walking on different surfaces such as tiles, gravel, planks and crates, and bridges, and playing in the ball pit! As well as loud noises such as hair-dryers, lawnmowers, power tools etc.

Always reward your puppy for positive behaviour. The reward doesn’t have to be food based. You can encourage calmness and good behaviour by pats and gentle handling, by which you can also introduce them to gentle massages to calm them down if they do become somewhat exuberant from time to time.

All ARF puppies come with ongoing training by professional trainers. Older dogs adopted from ARF may also receive trial training sessions if necessary. The following Canberra trainers and centres regularly assist ARFers and ex-ARFers to become good canine citizens.

When a local dog-loving couple contacted ARF late on a Monday evening in

January last year, desperate for help after they rescued two young female Ridgeback crossbreed pups from an unregistered breeder, the ARF community sprang into action.

Alarmed by the post offering the pups for free in a Facebook Buy, Swap and Sell Group, and with concerns for the health of the pups from the images shared, the couple arranged to take both the pups and get them the care they so desperately needed.

When they arrived, it was clear that the pups' condition was far worse than they feared, and they would need more specialised care beyond what they could provide. After a trip to the vets, they were told the prognosis was poor.

With time of the essence, ARF agreed to take the pups and by 9pm they had arrived with their ARF temporary foster carer. Dehydrated, malnourished and with vomiting and diarrhoea, the first hours and days were critical. They required round the clock attention, and the weaker of the

Cassidy’s TaleBy Lauren Quaglio and Ruth Underwood

two (Cassidy) spent four days on a feeding tube in veterinary care. Given her emaciated condition, the vets did not expect her to last the night. Meanwhile, Cassidy’s sister was well enough to go into foster care.

After four days in the vet hospital, Cassidy was well enough to be taken home by her foster carer to begin her recovery. Still very weak, it took Cassidy a few days to show some interest in her new home and foster siblings. As she put on weight she began to play and explore her surroundings, nervously at first but with confidence as time progressed.

A quick learner, Cassidy soon picked up lots of new things and was particularly clever at doing tricks. But most of all, she enjoyed playing with her foster sister and enticing lots of pats and affection from her foster carers.

Much to the delight of the ARF community, who were cheering on the girls’ progress, slowly but surely Cassidy’s condition improved. After a few months in foster care, she was ready to be placed into her new home.

THERE’S ONE IN EVERY BOX …Gorgeous Border Collie, Caelan, was so loved by his foster

carers that they adopted him. As you can see, his foster siblings Joey and Alkai, are thrilled!

Caelan came into ARF care on 12 October 2017 and was adopted on 17 January 2018.
