DOGWOOD RECEIVES NO TAX MONEY FOR ITS FUNDING. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN—MOSES AND MANY OTHERS ARE DEPENDING ON IT!

Moses was near death when a young woman (she must have looked like an angel of mercy to him) picked him up and brought him to Dogwood for help.

We’ll never know the circumstances that led him to be in such terrible condition, but he had clearly been in misery for a very long time. His skin was raw and in-fected, the pads on his feet swollen and sore, his nose and eyes full of mucous. He was literally starving, and almost too weak to stand on his own.

At first, he seemed a bit uneasy when Dogwood’s workers began to treat him. It didn’t take him long, though, to realize that he was being helped. He began to relax then, and sort of melted into the hands of the worker as she washed his eyes and face with cool water.

Within a few days, Moses got up and greeted people who came to talk to him—still a bit wobbly, but with a wagging tail and a happy expression on his face!

Most of the dogs and cats that come to Dogwood are not as bad off as Moses was, but many of them do need medical attention and/or behavioral rehabilitation. There’s no magic cure for these problems. It takes consistent, deliberate, caring work to help them become the wonderful adoptable friends they’re meant to be.

No magic, but maybe a bit of a miracle can be seen when these dogs and cats begin to understand that someone cares about them. That understanding seems to be a powerful first step toward their recovery. Moses is a heartwarming example of that!

Black dogs and cats are more likely to be passed by for adoption than those of other colors. It’s no different at Dogwood Animal Shelter. We ask ourselves how it is that such beautiful, intelligent animals can be so easily overlooked. The sad fact is that, on average, they spend a much longer time

waiting for a home than others. Above are pictured a few of the beautiful black pets waiting at Dogwood for their luck to change.

DOGWOOD ANIMAL SELTER HOLDS ITS FIRSTAKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST

On June 26, Dogwood Animal Shelter was pleased to host it’s first American Kenel Club CANINE GOOD CITIZEN test, otherwise known as a CGC. The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in public.

This nationally recognized program stresses responsible dog owner-ship for owners and basic training and good manners for dogs. Dogs who pass the ten step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. Dogs who are registered with the AKC may receive a title. Ten dogs who had taken DAS obedience classes par-ticipated in the test; all ten success-fully passed. Seven of the ten were shelter/rescue dogs; five of them had been adopted from Dogwood. Two dogs were AKC registered pure-

breds. Congratulations to Enzo, Laila, Lillie, Mollie, Ramsay, Riko, Rusty, Topper, Trevor & Zena and their han-dlers. We are very proud of you.

The test was administered by AKC Approved CGC Evaluator Marteen Nolan who generously donated all fees received to the shelter.

In the future, we hope to hold a CGC test following all advanced classes.Diane K & Hank Z, DAS obedience Instructors
