ROLE OF ARCHIVES IN CULTURAL MEMORY: CONCEPTS, THEORIES AND
METHODS OF PRESERVATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY
Abstract
Archives are institutions of cultural memory par excellence,
social constructions whose origin
is in social values and needs for information of individuals and
organizations. As such,
archives have a great social power that is reflected in the
position of control what we know
about past and presence; power of management of memory and
forgetfulness.
As a collective and archives, individual documents are not only
carriers of history, they
reflects the wishes of its creators; they have a purpose,
different contexts, the audience using
them; and the initial intervention and ongoing mediation
archivists have serious consequences
on the administrative responsibility of individual and
collective memory.
PhD thesis, which follows deals with archives and archival
science from several angles: as an
institution of cultural memory and one of the foundations of
national identity; underrated as a
scientific discipline that is ignored by the scientific public,
deals with herself without much
success; as an institution that requires a serious academic
education, faced with increasing
demands and growing mass of documents and objects that require
processing, storage and
accessibility to the public.
From all this it inevitably follows that it is necessary to
establish an appropriate archival
policy, have elaborate archival legislation and be sure to
include all the reference sections of
society in the joint action. Use properly defined, modern models
and archiving concepts
(archival studies, archival services) can be no confusion and
ideological limiting access to
cultural heritage. With this assumption ensures that archival
material is stored, processed and
used under conditions and in a manner that will ensure its
authenticity, authenticity,
uniqueness and user-friendliness.
