The DollarCamp Goal
DollarCamp’s goal is to teach Future Professionals how to live in a manner that is financially sustainable and provide a foundation for building a life of passion and success.
The curriculum uses multiple intelligence games and exercises coupled with fun illustrations and edgy language to enroll young people in the belief that the fastest way for them to achieve their dreams is by taking control of their finances.
Hairstylists leave Paul Mitchell Schools with amazing technical skills, yet many may find their personal and professional success undermined by AVOIDABLE financial mistakes. It doesn’t have to be this way, schools can provide critical life management skills quickly and efficiently without sacrificing their core mission.
DollarCamp believes that schools can pursue the worthy goal of teaching critical financial skills to future professionals WHILE boosting the morale, profitability, and performance of each school.
Turnkey Financial Education
DollarCamp’s Introduction to Cash & Credit is a turnkey financial education program created specifically for use within the network of Paul Mitchell beauty and cosmetology schools.
The program covers financial basics such as how to set goals, visualize success, budget, manage spending, understand and build good credit, and plan for the future without sacrificing the fun that young adults expect to have today.
The program’s implementation was designed to be very flexible and can accommodate a range of options from a take home self-study course to incorporation into a school’s curriculum with workshops and activities, as is currently the case in Paul Mitchell Schools in Louisiana.

Program Overview
DollarCamp Results from Louisiana Schools
It is logical that school owners would expect strong positive outcomes for their students and schools when offering any new curriculum. According to reports from the beta test conducted by Mark Palermo at Paul Mitchell Schools in Louisiana, the program has positively affected his schools in a number of ways:
y Faculty and Staff: Very excited about the opportunity to expand their instructional capacity as well as the impact on their personal well-being.
y Admissions: Parents that were skeptical regarding “beauty school” had an immediate change in perception once DollarCamp was presented as part of the tour.
y Financial Aid: Financial Aid Leaders see DollarCamp as a loan default remedy and deterrent tool and believe NACCAS/DOE will find value in the initiative.
y Culture: Future Professionals have expressed apprecia-tion for the initiative, specifically for the schools care and concern for their personal well-being.
y Salon Community: After presenting to salon owners during the JPMS Spring Trend Tour (over 400 in attendance), salon owners overwhelmingly applauded the initiative… so much so that many are interested in taking the course.
Hi Stephen,
As we near the completion of
our Beta test I am excited to let
you know we intend to execute
Option-1:
1) The DC kit will be included in
our school kit.
2) Every newly enrolled Future
Professional will participate in
the workshop format.
3) Our Financial Aid Leaders will
facilitate the course over 2-3
half-day sessions during the
“Core” phase.
In short, our school leadership
team validated all anticipated
outcomes from the DC initia-
tive. Aside the admissions and
financial aid benefits, we are
convinced DC will accentuate our
career/life readiness offering to
VCC Future Professionals.
Moreover DC will differentiate
VCC by providing a vital resource
not available to others attending
beauty school within our trading
area. Our distributor customers
are so impressed by our initiative
that many are interested in com-
ing back to school just to get DC.
How cool is that?!!!!!
Thanks,
Mark Palermo

Pricing & Payment
In the DollarCamp beta test in Louisiana, the DollarCamp Introduction to Cash and Credit kit was offered to the students on a voluntary basis. Over 50% of students decided to purchase the program as an out-of-pocket expense. Going forward, the two Louisiana schools are making DollarCamp mandatory and includ-ing the cost of the course in student tuition payments. Other schools are planning to offer the course as an optional workshop where the kit cost is passed on to the students as a programming fee.
y Future professionals have shown a willingness to absorb the additional cost of the program
y Certain schools will charge students an optional programming fee while other schools will include DollarCamp in the cost of tuition
y Parents have been very enthusiastic about their kids participation and are happy that schools are offering this financial education resource to their kids

Program Implementation
The DollarCamp program was developed for flexible implementation, so that it can be facilitated by Learning Leaders with minimal training or used as a self-study course by Future Professionals.
There are two primary implementation options for DollarCamp’s Introduction to Cash & Credit course:
OPTION 1: Self StudyThis option is for schools that want to provide financial education to students, yet do not have the resources to offer workshops or classroom facilitation. The self-study option simply involves giving Future Professionals the kits and enrolling them in the online certification program. Students work through the exercises on their own, receive support from DollarCamp’s online forum, and earn a Dol-larCamp certification online that they can put on their resume.
OPTION 2: Self Study + Classroom WorkshopThe workshop implementation strategy is the self-study option plus two interactive workshops where Learning Leaders facilitate group discussions and walk Future Professionals through each of the chapters in the course. The workshops focus on interactive activities and exercises on a variety of financial topics.
Each of the two workshops can be offered in a 3-4 hour long period, preferably approximately 3 weeks apart. Learning Leaders will have a workshop les-son plan for each chapter, which clearly outline the chapter objectives and very closely follow the traditional Paul Mitchell lesson plan format.
Implementation Options
DollarCamp contributes 3% of the
gross proceeds from each school’s
order of DollarCamp units to that
schools’ charity of choice.

Stephen Epstein
Stephen Epstein is the founder and creator of DollarCamp, a company that teaches students and young professionals how to successfully navigate the confusing world of money and personal finance. To teach critical money lessons in a fun and relevant way, DollarCamp offers high-energy and high-impact educational materials, illustrated course books, audio series, budgeting software, and online learning and certification courses that appeal to young adults.
Stephen is also the author of The Financial Survival Guide for Students and host of DollarTalk Radio, a nationally syndicated radio show that teaches people how to get out of debt. He has appeared as a guest on Jean Chatzky’s show (Oprah’s money expert) and worked closely with the Charles Schwab Foundation for financial literacy.
Stephen’s commitment to getting the message out is nowhere more apparent than in his DollarCamp speaking engagements. Dressed in the diamond and gold encrusted hip-hop ensemble of his alter ego, Sir Blings-A-Lot, Stephen speaks at high schools and colleges to raise the level of financial awareness among young people. As part of his nonprofit lecture series, he gives many presentations at schools in communities spanning the socioeconomic spectrum.
During interviews Stephen is quick to point out the sobering statistic that half of all college-age students start their professional lives with high-interest credit card debt that creates financial and personal problems. DollarCamp believes financial problems can ruin health and personal relationships, destroy personal creativ-ity, and trap people in jobs that keep them from realizing their full potential. The opposite is also true: financial peace can enhance health and relationships, cause creativity to flourish, and allow people to freely and passionately pursue their dreams. DollarCamp teaches young adults how to create the financial peace that will serve as a solid foundation for a successful life.
DollarCamp relies on the help of parents, leaders, and teachers to raise the level of financial awareness among young people.

Dollar Camp Beta Test Report
As of: April 24, 2009 Prepared by: Mark T. Palermo, co-owner, Vanguard College of Cosmetology, A Paul Mitchell Partner School
Beta Test Results
Scope The Dollar Camp (DC) Beta Test is designed to assess the fea-sibility of offering a course on the fundamentals of managing personal finances at a pre-licensure level.
Background Mark and Lisa Palermo introduced Dollar Camp at the compa-ny’s annual stakeholders meeting in December 2008;
“We take great pride in going above and beyond cosmetology instruction. However, we are equally sensitive to not allowing curriculum enhancements impede on cosmetology instruction, our primary function. We are absolutely certain this ‘Life Pre-paredness’ initiative will better prepare our graduates for the pursuit of their personal American dream.” –Mark T. Palermo, December 15, 2008.
Mark and Lisa have been searching and evaluating personal development courses on this topic for years. None have met expectations to the extent of DC.
Objectives The following objectives were necessary prior to beta test execution:
1. Packaging: Professional, edgy, appealing to the mil-lennial Future Professional. The LL Instructional Guide should closely coincide with the course book.
2. Content: Connected to our community, i.e. “hair-dresser friendly”, and, great enhancement to the PM School Brand.
3. Multiple Intelligences: Contextual application of the MI’s, specifically B/K, Spatial, and Musical – the three dominate profiles of our industry.
4. Turn-Key: Easy to facilitate for staff and faculty. This is essential as we are continually looking for ways to empower our faculty as well as build their credibility as industry professionals.
5. Pricing: Reasonable on a per unit basis, not to exceed $129/unit. The purchase agreement must allow for smaller bundle purchases - 15-20 Future Pro-fessionals per class start.
6. Time efficient: Lesson plans should allow for a 60 minute session per chapter, total 9-10 hours.
Details Dollar Camp Collaboration Roundtable – Facilitated by Mark Palermo and Troy Kloewer.
On April 7th, VCC hosted a half day in-house train-the-trainer session with a focus on Dollar Camp. Following a brief opening by Mark, a 90-minute breakout session took place whereby the
assigned 2-person teams (per campus) collaborated in class-rooms set up as learning centers. The learning centers con-sisted of colorful posters and props that supported the message of the designated chapter. All faculty and staff were involved in the brainstorming session. Mark and Troy floated between breakout groups providing coaching and guidance. The level of interaction was exceptional. The outcome was amazing.
Following the collaboration session, each team conducted a 15 minute presentation on their chapter’s lesson plan to elicit feedback from the other participants, whose purpose was to be the “sounding board”.
TimelineOctober 08’ – January 09’: Worked directly with DC on kit (book), course, and LL instructional guide design. Presented prototype to VCC enrollment.
February: Gained commitment from approximately 50% of enrollment, who paid cash for the kit.
March 24-25: Official launch to faculty, staff, and enrollment.
April – August: Course facilitation
April 14th – Chapter 1 June 23rd – Chapter 6
April 28th – Chapter 2 July 14th – Chapter 7
May 5th – Chapter 3 August 11th – Chapter 8
May 19th – Chapter 4 August 18th – Chapter 9
June 16th – Chapter 5
Initial OutcomesBased the initial phase of the beta test, we have recognized the following:
1. Faculty and Staff: Very excited about the opportunity to expand their instructional capacity as well as the impact on their personal well-being.
2. Admissions: Skeptical parents had an immediate change in perception of “beauty school” once Dollar Camp is presented as part of the tour.
3. Financial Aid: The Financial Aid Leader sees this as a loan default remedy and deterrent tool. She also believes NACCAS/DOE will find value in the initiative.
4. Culture: Future Professionals have expressed appre-ciation for the initiative, specifically for our care and concern for their personal well-being.
5. Salon Community: After presenting to salon owners during the JPMS Spring Trend Tour (over 400 in at-tendance), salon owners overwhelmingly applauded the initiative. So much so that many are interested in taking the course.
