recently i took up the offer for a free home sustainability assessment report, generously paid for by the Federal Government. I had always considered myself to be energy and water conscious but figured there is always room for improvement. So I undertook the one hour assessment and waited for my report in the mail. Being involved in the window furnishings industry for a number of years now I have been well aware (and in fact spruiked myself) the energy saving abilities of window furnishings. However when I got my assessment back I was in for a shock. According to the report, by installing properly fitted blinds, lined curtains or internal shutters to better regulate the temperature in my home I could save $4,964. Almost five grand! Additionally if I was to modify my windows or shading to increase the amount of sunlight coming into my home during winter to reduce my heating requirements I could save an additional $3,225. How they arrived at such an exact figure aside, the numbers to me were staggering. What was more staggering was that the savings the report suggested I could make from installing insulation in my wall cavities, ceiling cavities and under the floor amounted to just $1377. For years the value of having insulation has been extolled upon us by that industry and even the government with various schemes and subsidies. Yet the savings offered by quality window furnishings, properly installed could (in my case) save more money than all the other suggested initiatives combined. It is not as though I have bare windows either, but my curtains lack pelmets, and my blinds have been poorly fitted and poorly chosen for the aspect of the house they adorn. Since I moved in a year ago it had been on my list to get Dollar Curtains and their expert team of decorators and fitters to improve not only the look of my new place, but the energy efficiency as well. It is now top of my list. I suggest to you also to take advantage of their expertise, as well and making your home green (however, the choice of colour is up to you!).

Texture is the new black when it comes to interior decorating. Try blending a variety of fabrics in the same colour; adding candles, mirrors and platters to match. Feeling more adventurous? Contrast with flourishes of colour in the form of cushions, wall art and furniture.

In a post-GFC landscape,

people are tending to stay closer

to heart and home, making colour

forecasters predict a resurgence

of ‘brights’ to uplift moods and

enliven the ever popular natural

shadings currently in style. For the

past ten years or so, Australian

design and architecture has been

dominated by the minimalist

movement. Most of the major

home magazines are full of

images of ceiling-to-floor windows

with nothing on them, while hard

surfaces (usually a shade of white)

have dominated the decorative

landscape. The good news for

lovers of soft furnishings and

colour is that there is a growing

backlash against this dominant

look. Textured (or structured

fabrics) are becoming more

and more prominent, not just in

drapery, but also blind fabrics.

Structured screen fabrics with

differing weave patterns and

yarn thickness offer a multitude

of looks, and flocked blockouts

offer an option for much needed

texture whilst maintaining a neutral

appearance. Prints and primary

colours are also becoming more

popular, particularly for communal

areas such as the kitchen and

lounge as well as for brightening

up children’s bedrooms.

Primary colours are also set to

feature in drapery almost like

what was seen in the 1980s, but

mixed with white and sometimes

black to give it a new modern

edge. A luxurious look will also

be prominent, but not for the

sake of show, more in the context

of quality workmanship. ‘eco-

luxury’ is another term bandied

about, putting a different bent on

the types of products coming to

market (think Aesop cosmetics).

lovers of the classics will be

heartened to see a baroque and

rococo revival; however, furniture

and decorative pieces will be

stretched in shape, or upholstered

in new modern fabrics to grab

attention.

Colour palettes to match include

deep berry and wine colours,

coppers, golds and petrol and

duck royal blues to give depth.

earthy beiges, caramel and forest

colours, well worn tones and

stylised folk will also hit trend

over the next 18 months. Another

throw back to the 1980s will see

pastels such as pinks and blues

making a strong play, but worked

in transparencies, and then used

with the same colours but in deep

transparency to make a contrast.

stores, including franchises up and down

Australia’s eastern seaboard.

“My father started the business in 1967,

ably assisted by my mum” says Peter. “They

chose to specialise in carpets, curtains

and wallpapers in their Boronia store, but

over the years, curtains became their real

strength. This was in the days before blinds

became an integral part of the business.”

As the business continued to grow and

succeed, further stores were opened in

Quiet achiever Dollar Curtains and Blinds has grown from humble beginnings into one of Australia’s leading window furnishing enterprises, something that makes owners Peter and Lyn Crosby very proud.

changes were taking place, Peter started to

take control of the family business.

“About 30 years ago, we changed the

name to Dollar Curtains and Blinds

because we wanted to go in a different

direction,” Peter explains.

“At that time, we were stocking and selling

fabric by the metre over the counter, as

well as providing a quality service of

custom- made work.”

“Following the name change we started

opening up more stores and soon

people were beginning to enquire about

franchising opportunities.”

Soon after, the first Dollar Curtains and

Blinds franchise opened in Bendigo

and before long, there was another in

Shepparton.

“The franchises are really important to us

because they give us strength as a group.”

“It is not just us; it is the franchises and

us,” lyn Crosby explains.

Both Dollar Curtains and Blinds franchises

and brand off-shoot DCB Designs supply a

wide range of window treatment products

for new residences, home renovations and

commercial properties, customising orders

to suit all needs including affordability.

“We also spend a lot of effort on store

locations, whereas others do business via

consultation.”

“We showcase a diverse range of window

solutions including eco friendly products,”

he says.

“We believe this works because seeing

the displayed products of what you are

intending to buy, instead of a picture of

how they might look, gives you more

concepts and confidence with your final

purchase.” “The staff spend time with

you so you know exactly what you are

ordering.”

“The samples can also be taken home to

see how they hang and look in the home

environment.”

Aside from the visual aspect of the stores,

Dollar Curtains and Blinds offers a free

measure and quote and also an interior

design consultancy service.

“our staff has a great deal of experience

and knowledge and keep up to date with

the latest looks and trends,” Peter says.

“We do it all, from in-house quotes,

workroom manufacture through to

installation; everything from start to finish.”

over the past five years, the company has

gone through a large period of growth.

During this time, the couple’s three sons

joined the business, invigorating and

helping drive the company through this

exciting period.

“This third generation decided they

wanted the business for their future, and

since then, they have been committed to

keeping up with continuing changes and

developments within the industry.”

“I was looking for a career change, when my

sister, who owned a Dollar Curtains and Blinds

franchise in Melton, suggested I look into purchasing

a store that was up for sale,” Martin says.

“So I organised a meeting with then director Frank

Crosby, along with Peter Crosby and arranged the

deal.

“With my background in trades, the industry was

totally foreign to me, but I went ahead and bought

the franchise.”

In those days Dollar Curtains and Blinds’ best-sellers

were drapes, sheers and holland blinds.

“Sometimes we’d also sell decorator rods, pelmets,

tie-backs and other accessories to enhance the

customer’s window coverings.”

As the Dollar Curtains chain continued to grow, the

headquarters and warehouse shifted next-door to the

manufacturing workroom.

This accelerated the production flow, with easier

access to fabrics and other hardware.

It was about this time that lyn and Peter Crosby

took over Dollar Curtains and Blinds, bringing in

new concepts, modern machinery and computer

technology.

“At that time vertical blinds were gaining popularity

as an inexpensive way to dress windows but trends

changed and new products became available that

further enhanced interior concepts,” Martin says.

However, with the introduction of these new products

to the Dollar Curtains range, a move to two larger

warehousing and manufacturing sites in Kilsyth was

necessary.

“This made it easier for franchises to do their

regular pickups and enabled the company to

operate training sessions on various new trends and

developments within the industry.”

Apart from being part of one of Australia’s leading

window furnishing teams, Martin says buying a

Dollar Curtains and Blinds franchise offered him the

satisfaction of being his own boss.

“For me, one of the benefits of owning a franchise is

the satisfaction of knowing that whatever you put into

your business you will get back.

“You also get to meet a diverse range of customers

and it has been pleasing to have many of them back

as return customers over the years.

“This obviously means that they have been happy

with their purchases and the service provided.”

He says it is reassuring to know that he can rely on

the expertise and back-up from the head office staff

at any time.

“With in-house expertise, constant modernisation

of equipment and technology, improved training,

constant introduction of new products and the buying

power of such a large company, we can look forward

to a long and busy future.”

Crossing.

sales, office and manufacturing staff.“one of the advantages we have with our staff is that we are still a family business.”In the Crosbys’ opinion, nurturing a family atmosphere within the company helps motivate workers to get the most out of themselves. “We are working constantly with our staff and visit our stores on a regular basis.“It is an asset that we still manufacture in Australia – which is not easy to do at the moment with constant challenges from overseas.“We train all our staff ourselves and have been doing so for over 30 years.” With the continual expansion of the business, it was necessary for the head office to move to larger premises, which include better facilities for conducting more staff training on product knowledge, marketing strategies and further ideas to keep the business moving forward. “Due to the increased demand for blinds, it became necessary for us to move from eight separate locations to two sites totalling over 9000 square metres.“In doing this, it has allowed us to further expand our blind manufacturing and introduce new products to our range.”efficient staff, constant expansion, numerous showrooms and a thick spread of franchises means Dollar Curtains and Blinds is able to pass on savings to customers.“We have long standing business relationships and substantial buying power with our wholesalers,” Peter says. “We get price savings because we buy in bulk and can therefore pass these savings on to the public.”The company’s ability to offer competitive pricing, quality products and unbeatable service is central to Dollar Curtains and Blinds’ success.

DRAMAStaying true to a property’s character is important to Dollar Curtains and Blinds, particularly when it comes to period houses.

“In this case, the customer had high ceilings and ornate soft

furnishings,” the Chirnside store manager says.

“So we had to make the curtains fit in with this traditional look,

whilst still making a statement.

“It was important not to overdo the swags with too many trims or

frills, as the sheer size of the window meant any furnishings added

would have an impact.

“lastly, we used matching cushions to bring the whole look

together.”

Try to buy the best quality you

can afford, after all, your window

treatments will be a part of the

architectural form of your home and

the backdrop for living for many

years to come.

Apart from the aesthetic appeal,

window treatments are used to

control heat and either block or filter

light, frame a view, protect furniture

from the damaging and fading rays

of the sun, provide privacy from

neighbours, or the street and create

an appealing ambience in your

rooms. Your style of home will often

dictate the type and style of window

treatment too. A formal, traditional

home looks best with classic swags

and tails, finished with passementerie

like decorative trims, fringes, tassels

and tiebacks. often a combination

of blinds and curtains is an ideal

solution, where the blind does all the

hard work and the curtains dress the

window.

In a more contemporary home, you

may be happy with a simpler blind

solution. Blinds can be made in

many materials and styles. Pleated

roman, Bonded or Balloon styles rely

on fabric and look pretty in country

style or shabby chic style homes, but

more casual, or architectural looks

include matchstick and woven types,

and timber or slatted metal styles.

Flat fabric drops that slide on runners

at the top of the window and overlap

each other when fully closed are

another modern take on window

dressing. The individual drops need

not match, creating an opportunity

for your personality and individuality

to shine through in fabric choice.

In cold areas you may need a

thermal lining for your curtains and

bedrooms benefit from varying

“Have you ever stopped to think about how much time you

spend pulling on cords or chains, opening and closing your blinds

and curtains every day?” asks Alistair Grice, marketing manager

for Somfy in Australia and new Zealand. “Wouldn’t you much

rather just push a button and have all your blinds automatically

move to the exact position you want?” If the answer is yes, then

read on.

Based in the French Alps close to Geneva and the home of

precision manufacturing normally associated with Swiss watches,

Somfy offers a wide range of solutions for stunning remote control,

internal and external window coverings. The electric motors are

hidden away inside the blind or behind the curtain and are very

discreet. You don’t even notice they are there.

Just imagine for a moment; you are running out the door to get

the children to school and go to work, and with the press of one

button, conveniently located by the front door, all of your blinds

close to keep the house cool on a scorching hot summer’s day.

“Whilst remote control blinds are a little more expensive than

manual blinds, consider them as an investment for your home and

your lifestyle,” says Alistair. “Make your window treatments work for

you.” A simple addition is a timer or sun sensor, and is a real time

and energy saver that can automatically open or close your blinds.

In this day and age, there are more and more options available for

motorisation. But, as Alistair says, it is important to make sure you

are getting value for money. “Somfy has an investment in Australia

and worldwide that is second to none. We have been in Australia

for over 20 years and offer support and back-up to our customers

that surpasses our 5 year warranty.”

Sensitivity towards customers’ personal taste is of utmost importance to the team at Dollar Curtains and Blinds, whose furnishing solutions can be matched to suit any style.

“For this project, we needed to incorporate the customer’s gilded mirrors and French ornamental vases to

Modern architecture called for a fresh take on window furnishings at this stunning beach front house.

The first step was to decide on a

colour scheme, Dollar Curtains and Blinds’

Batemans Bay store manager says.

“Customers’ personal colour preferences

are really important to us, as they’ll be the

ones living at the house; not our staff.”

Following that first step, the building’s

vast array of large curved windows and

its vista across the water were taken into

consideration.

“other than aesthetics, things considered

for this project included insulation,

light control, uv protection and the

maintenance of million dollar sea views.

“We decided to use sunscreen roller

blinds for their ability to maintain views

whilst insulating the house and providing

protection from the sun.

“likewise, timber shutter covered all the

requirements, so we used them in the

bedrooms.”

Modern houses dictate clean lines and contemporary window furnishings.

The minimalist architectural influence has seen a rise in the use of

shutters, roman blinds and roller blinds.

Major builders are going for clean, modern, square settings and these

three types of window furnishings are perfect for that.

As a result, looks in drapery have also modernised. Swags, tie backs and

pelmets don’t have to be confined to period homes. They can be given a

modern edge with linear and curved linear lines.

When it comes to creating a clean, contemporary atmosphere at home,

consultants at Dollar Curtains and Blinds suggest choosing streamlined

window furnishings in ageless colours, particularly white and cream. Taupes

and earthy colours have also proven popular over the last 18 months.

The Dollar Curtains team knew it was on the money when a customer returned wanting the same crisp white furnishings for a second property.

"One customer was so happy with our work, she later

returned asking us to repeat the process on another of her

properties," the Canberra store manager says.

To recreate the look of the customer's original home, the team

used white roller blinds with sheer curtains on top.

"The customer liked the idea of eyelets to create even ripples in

the heading but didn't want to see the blinds behind the curtains.

"That's when we came up with the idea to add a thick band at

the top.

"We achieved a really beautiful look; crisp and soft at the same

Low maintenance window shutters are a favoured form of furnishing and Dollar Curtains and Blinds has all window types covered.

Shutters at Dollar Curtains and Blinds come

in three main varieties: sliding, hinged and

bi-fold.

Hinged shutters are by far the most popular

because they are cheaper than the other styles

and they suit most windows.

Shutters’ popularity has almost doubled over

the past five years, largely due to improved

marketing, but convenience is another driving

factor behind their success.

They’re low maintenance and when the blades

are angled, there’s the ability to distort light.

They look good from the outside as well

as from indoors. Staff at Dollar Curtains

recommend them for modern houses or any

room where customers want a streamlined

look.

Hoad has been one of Dollar Curtains and Blinds’ main suppliers

for more than 40 years, and in the years since, the partnership has

gone from strength to strength.

Hoad national sales manager Sue Stuckey says the two companies

share business values as well as an understanding of the market to

which they sell.

“Hoad tunes into what Dollar Curtains customers are buying and

supplies a quality product at an affordable price,” Stuckey says.

She says popular ranges at the moment include sheers, traditional and

contemporary jacquards, textured plains and neutrals.

“Fabrics that enhance a relaxed lifestyle such as the new Coast-to-

Coast range and the Australian-made neutral Territory range have

been very popular.”

Hoad’s new Axiom range, a classic modern stripe in a range of up-to-

date colours, suits both contemporary and traditional homes.

For some time now, taupe has been the most popular neutral colour,

but new neutrals including sand and grey-toned off-white (which works

well with charcoal and black) are coming through.

“This colour palette is clearly visible in all of Hoad’s newer ranges,”

Stuckey says.

She indicates that marked trends for 2010 include the return of colour,

particularly in the form of purple, acid green and tribal brights.

“The new colour palettes will add vibrancy to any decorating scheme.

“Metallics and lurex are bigger than ever and can be seen in many

designs and colour styles.

“Fabrics with lustre continue to be featured in european design shows.

“The latest design trends show interesting and varied textures such as

crinkle finishes, plains mimicking animal skins and textures symbolic of

those found naturally.”

Baroque design is still very strong and stripes are as popular as they

have ever been.

Function-wise, Stuckey says sheer curtains continue to dominate the

popularity stakes. www.hoad.com.au

Maurice Kain general manager Michelle West says her company

delivers product to the market on trend and on time.

“As one of the largest textile converters in Australasia, we are able to

offer affordable style for decorating the home,” West says.

A seamless transition into the Basford Brands family of Filigree laces

and Sheers, Sekers, Claremont and Filigree Blinds has been underway

since the 2006 acquisition of Maurice Kain.

“The size of the group gives Maurice Kain the strength to research and

develop new products and stabilise the supply chain, ” West says.

She believes that Maurice Kain’s use of technology has increased the

brand’s speed to market substantially.

“We dreamed about being in this position five years ago and now we

are part of a global market, with access to a range of products and

designs.”

other positive side effects of the Basford Brands–Maurice Kain

merger include improved communications and technical treatment

developments.

“There are exciting developments in the area of new yarn types, which

add texture and vibrancy to different base cloths,” West tells WFA.

Maurice Kain also has an in-house quality assurance department, to

ensure the highest textile standards are met.

“not only do we develop product that looks great, we also ensure it

performs to consumers’ expectations.

“The latest statistics show consumers change their windows every

seven years, which means they can have confidence their Maurice

Kain purchases will go the distance.”

A huge amount of work goes into all Maurice Kain products before

they reach the market; colourfastness and everything from design to

counter samples and technical testing is accounted for.

“We spend about 100 man hours on each product before it reaches

the shop floor.

“We look forward to bringing through more colours and textures and

used to create additional outdoor living areas and

to provide protection from the elements, Dollar

Curtains consultants will tell you external window

furnishings are a must for every home. They’re

very durable and they save you money in terms of

which work by creating an air pocket between the

outside elements and the window’s glass pane.

The laws of heat transfer then ensure that the

This direct supply chain ensures that Pasaya’s cut-length and

roll-stock product is fully stocked and delivered within seven working

days Australia-wide.

Pasaya launches approximately 50 new ranges each year under its

three banners: Pasaya Blue Pin, Pasaya Contract and Pasaya enzen.

The ranges are showcased twice annually at Maison et objet, Paris

and in the company’s Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and

Brisbane showrooms. Pasaya’s aim is to bring to market a value-for-

money proposition, excellent design and quality at highly competitive

pricing. every single product is constructed to its optimum weight

and density and, as a result, Pasaya fabrics consistently outperform

similarly priced products in the market.

With the capacity to weave and warehouse its own product in one

central location, Pasaya does not rely on outsourcing product. This

ensures all manufacturing processes are delivered within international

best practice quality parameters.

Pasaya systematically inspects product at five separate points along

its production process, making sure all products meet market-leading

standards. every batch is tested for colourfastness (to light, rubbing

and washing), dimensional stability, shrinkage, abrasion (Martindale)

and seam slippage. Colours are carefully developed in Pasaya’s r&D

division, and colour tolerance is tracked within the company’s fully

equipped lab.

All batches are required to fall within the 0.8 to 1.2 measurement

on the Delta e scale for colour matching. This, in addition to visual

checks on each batch, ensures colour continuity and allows retail

customers to complete one job from any number of batches.

Pasaya selects premium dyestuffs and ensures that all of its fabrics are

dyed without the application of heavy metal dyes or formaldehyde,

which are both environmentally damaging and would interfere with

the company’s carefully monitored closed water system.

This is a crucial part of Pasaya’s environmental management system,

especially when consideration is given to the factory location in a

rural district with rice and fresh water fish farms both within the mill’s

boundaries and adjacent to the facility.

In fact, Pasaya’s final water storage facility — on which the staff

canteen is built — is so heavily stocked with freshwater carp that

farming neighbours are invited in for an annual fishing day.

Hunter Douglas group product manager, natasha Croft, says one of Hunter Douglas’s most technologically

advanced products is novascreen Sunscreen.

“novascreen Sunscreen fabric features enduris glass core technology, making this one of Hunter Douglas’s most

technically advanced solar shading fabrics,” Croft says.

“By controlling the amount of heat entering a home, it can reduce the load on air-conditioners, which saves money

and reduces carbon emissions.”

novascreen Sunscreen is a double-sided fabric; the dark side offers glare reduction and excellent visibility through the

fabric and the light side provides heat control.

For applications in modern homes where windows are oversized, extraview Plus and ecoview Plus sunscreen fabrics

are available in 3m widths.

The broad colour palette features 18 colours for ecoview Plus and 20 colours for extraview Plus.

Hunter Douglas also has it covered when it comes to external fabrics. everview screen fabric, which features strong,

stable mesh construction, is designed to maintain outward visibility and eliminate uv rays, heat and glare.

“This external fabric is available in a metallic yarn, as well as a mixture of natural and bright colours to ensure there is

a colour for all decors.”

Apart from colour and design, it is also important to choose durable fabrics.

Two new Australian-made fabrics, Baltic and Carnaby, have been treated with Sanitized antimicrobial protection and

Duraguard fabric protector.

“Fabrics treated with Sanitized antimicrobial protection effectively reduce the development of bacteria, odour and

mildew.”

Fabrics treated with Duraguard effectively repel most stain-causing agents. Fabrics treated with Sanitized antimicrobial

At Lifestyle, it is felt that the best shutters are created through

meticulous manufacturing processes. every stage — from raw

materials sourcing, to handcrafting, to labour-intensive sanding and

finishing — is carried out with three words in mind: value for money.

unbeatable quality, durability and long-term value is the name of the

game for all custom lifestyle shutters.

According to the experts at lifestyle, well-crafted shutters close solidly,

do not have unsightly gaps and stay that way year-round. each part of

the shutter must resist twisting, bowing, cupping and all other forms of

instability inherent to natural wood. According to lifestyle’s Australian

sales manager, David Morris, compounding the challenge is the fact

that many shutters require pieces of wood that must span over six feet.

“We are the only shutter manufacturer to compensate for wood’s

tendency to deform,” Morris says.

“To fix the problem, we use reinforced engineered wood stiles.”

The company employs a costly and time-consuming procedure that

bonds multiple layers of wood together with pressure, heat and

chemicals.

This method affords the stiles’ cores intense durability and results in

robust support systems for all shutter panels.

Wood shrinking and swelling is another main cause of misalignment

and lifestyle’s patented wood drying technique is used to combat the

phenomenon.

However, the real secret to lifestyle’s attractive shutters is in the

finishing. Multiple sequences of sanding — with progressively finer

sandpaper — are performed to open the wood’s pores for coating

and smoothing of surfaces. every lifestyle shutter is then painted or

stained numerous times, assuring a silken and lustrous finish.

“It’s the care taken during manufacturing that sets us apart,” Morris

says.

“our attention to detail and the assurance of longevity are [the best]

bar none.

“We have been in this industry a long time and have established a

reputation as the world’s leading shutter brand.”
