Nick Stewartand the Big Brush


My name is Nick Stewart and I createartwork using Quink ink and Domestosbleach.

This bizarre process epitomises the ethos of ‘less is more’ and not only demonstrateshow much one can achieve using a verylimited palette but also emphasises the factthat great outcomes can often come fromthe most unexpected of sources. It is also aprocess that is very much serendipity ledand the beauty of the final outcomes areoften dictated by this.

The finished artwork exudes a magical neon vibrancy that most people appear tobe naturally drawn to and when told how itis created are often left pleasantlydumbfounded.

This document features a diverse range ofartwork created purely with Domestos andQuink and nothing else!

As LOWE OPEN are the account holders for the Domestos brand, I want to show youthat this product is a creative agent as wellas hygiene solution.

INTRODUCTION



With over 20 years of experimentation, mymost successful artworks have beenachieved using Quink black and red inks withDomestos bleach. I have tried many otherinks and agents but Domestos, and Quinkachieve the most visually impactive results

Writing inks are different to traditional artinks in that they do not contain a shellac orvarnish. They contain a small quantity ofsolvent that not only cleans a nib as it writesbut allows the ink to be more easilyabsorbed into the paper and dry moreefficiently. They also possess anotherpeculiar visual quality which occurs whenthe fluids come into contact – a brilliantneon gold colour – a weird kind of alchemy.

Outside of an art college environment, thismedium is almost unheard of. As you cansee, it is a very different way of creating artand intrigues all who engage with it.

THE MEDIUM




I completed a BA(Hons) degree in GraphicDesign and Illustration at Brighton University,where I was tutored by the renownedcalligrapher Miriam Stribley,

After graduating I spent many years in London,producing specialist lettering for some of theworld's biggest and best known brands at theleading edge visualising studios of HelicopterGrafix, Storyboards Harpers and latterly ThreeBlind Mice/Jelly London.

I continue to take on a diverse range of typeprojects from fine tweaking existing artwork tothe creation of brand identities, types and scripts for publishing, marketing andadvertising campaigns.

I am also an elected Member of LetterExchange – an internationally recognisedgroup of skilled lettering professionals based atthe Art Workers Guild, Queen Square, London.

ABOUT THE ARTIST






Where possible I run workshops on behalfof the University of Creative Arts. Thestudents find the Quink ink and Domestosbleach process and the serendipityoutcomes achieved both inspirational andmotivational.

In 2011 I worked with sixth form artstudents from various schools across NorthKent to produce an art show celebratingthe 400th year of the King James Bible.The key aim of the project was to inspirethe students to produce work that wouldengage an audience of their own peers.Circa 3,000 people came to see the showat Rochester Cathedral, with positive local,regional and national media coverage.www.facebook.com/pages/KJV400/256256614393655

Brush Marks, featuring the Big Brush, was a one day event aimed at taking art into thecommunity. The event was staged at theMaidstone Museum. Using the Quink inkand Domestos bleach process on a hugescale, circa 1,200 people came to see theshow and partake in the workshops withpositive local and regional media coverage.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS


From hand drawn lettering and illustration topainting and abstract interior art, this mediumhas a unique creative magic about it. Not onlydoes this process produce beautiful art buteven more importantly it inspires andcaptivates all who engage with it.
