A&M Department To Host National Vet Medicine Meet
Texas A&M will host the fourth Symposium on Veterinary Medical Education next month, a time when educators will present their views on graduate veterinary education in the U. S.
With veterinary medicine no longer restricted to ‘doctoring’ farm animals, but rather a profession which has grown into many facets to meet man’s needs, the symposium will be strictly academic.
The first symposium in 1964 was held at Michigan State University where curriculums and teaching techniques were discussed. Clinical education was debated in the second symposium at the University of Georgia a year later.
In 1966, the meeting returned to Michigan State where educators looked at preprofessional veterinary education.
GAINING IN stature, this year’s symposium is cooperatively sponsored by nine veterinary organizations. They include the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, AVMA Council on Education, AVMA Council on Research, the American Board of Veterinary Public Health, the American Board of Veterinary Radiology, the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology, The American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, and the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Sessions are set in the Memorial Student Center March 24-25. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m., said coordinator Dr. William W. Bay.
KEYNOTER for the two-day meeting is Dr. Hilliard Jason, director, Office of Medical Education, Research and Develop
ment, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University.
Other major speakers and their topics are Dr. Vincent E. Price, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Md., “Extrapolations from Medical Education to Veterinary Medical Education;” Dr. Ivan L. Bennett, Science and
Technology, Executive Office of the President, Washington, D. C., “Postdoctoral Medical Education in the Future,” and Dr. George Christensen, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Iowa State University, “The Future of Postdoctoral Education in Veterinary Medical Education.”
Grad Lectures Slated For Science Topics
Three graduate lectures, all scientific, are scheduled this week.
The Physics Department will host a Wednesday lecture entitled “The Hanlee Effect In 2’P Helium” by Dr. Edward Fry, physics professor at the University of Michigan. The talk is set for 4 p.m. in Room 146 of the Physics Building.
Dr. Garland Ross Marshall, assistant professor of Physiology and biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday in Room 114, Herman Heep Building. Topic for the program, sponsored by the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department, is “Confirmation of Peptide Hormones: New Approaches.”
“Avian Cytogenetics” is the subject for a 4 p.m. Friday lecture by Dr. R. N. Shoffer, professor of animal sciences at the University of Minnesota. The lecture, sponsored by the Poultry Science Department, will be conducted in Room 104, Agricultural Building.
