One of the hallmarks of our school of excellence has been the high percentage of students choosing to enroll in honors and Advanced Placement courses, and we encourage our Titans to challenge themselves again during the upcoming school year. As the Titans select their courses for next year, we invite parents to join their students and teachers during Titan Time on Monday, March 30 th and Tuesday, March 31 st to review course selections together. Financial Aid for College You may find the following information helpful to you in the financial aid process: 1. Complete the 2009-10 FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid no later than March 1, 2009. You limit the sources of aid available if the application is received after the deadline. The deadline is the day the FAFSA is received, not postmarked.

2. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can submit a paper FAFSA, but it takes longer to process and you are more likely to make errors. Paper FAFSAs can be requested from the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243 and will take about two weeks to receive. 3. The FAFSA does not have to be completed after your federal income taxes are filed, but it does make the process much easier. The FAFSA instructions will ask you to report information from specific lines in your tax return. 4. You can sign your FAFSA electronically with a PIN number or you can print a signature page and mail it in. If your student is classified as dependent, both you and your student need to sign the FAFSA, and you both need your own PINs. You can request one here: www.pin.ed.gov.

Top 10 Scholarship Application Do’s 1. Understand the scholarship’s mission – To get the money, you have to know why they’re giving it out. In other words, read the description of the award to see why the organization is sponsoring it. Appreciating the purpose of the award will help you create an application that complements it. 2. Remember who your audience is – Think about who the judges are likely to be. You need to address animal rights activists and retired dentists differently! 3. Show how you fit with the scholarship’s mission – You’re not going to win unless you have what the selection committee wants! 4. Be proud of your accomplishments – Make your contributions known, effectively.

5. Make your application stand out – Set yours apart with unique accomplishments. 6. Focus on leadership and contributions – Make your contributions known. 7. Practice to make sure everything fits – Use your spare copies of the application for practice. 8. Get editors – They’ll help you create the best, error-free applications you can. 9. Include a resume – Whether they ask for it or not, make sure you include a tailored scholarship resume. 10. Make copies of your finished applications for reference – Save them for future reference.

* *Applications for scholarships can be found in the Career Center or on the DHS website.

Reminders to Juniors Tis the season to visit college campuses. There are many Open Houses in the spring. Check out the college website under Admissions and look for the “visit schedule” to register. Your spring break is an excellent time to check out a campus while they are in session. Make an appointment to see a professor or director in an area you are interested in. For example, if you want to be a teacher, take time to speak with the Director of Elementary or Secondary Education. Go online to the DHS website, under Guidance/College Career Center to download a copy of “questions to ask a college representative”. Take this with you as you visit colleges. Be sure you are working on your resume and update it regularly. Go online to Ms. Norton’s page and download an example. Now is a good time to register for an SAT or ACT. Be sure to take the ACT with writing. More and more colleges accept the ACT. Register at www.collegeboard.com or www.act.org Apr. 4 ACT BRHS or HHS

ATLAS PTO UPDATES ATLAS is the nonprofit PTO whose mission is to support Dominion High School (DHS) through volunteering and fundraising. ATLAS supports all of the school’s curricular and extra-curricular activities. Your involvement and support helps sustain the excellent education that all students receive at Dominion. This article provides an overview of our activities, and how you can help. First, thanks to everyone who has already taken part in any of our programs, events, or activities; your participation is greatly appreciated and it has made a difference in our school. ATLAS transferred over $48,000 to DHS between September and February this school year, and this funding has helped every department and activity. Our goal is to transfer over $100,000 to DHS every year. Fundraising: If you or your group would like to sponsor a fundraising activity, please complete a fundraising proposal from the template located on the DHS web site, under “PTO: ATLAS” and then under “Fundraising Policy and Guidance.” You can simply submit the document as an email attachment to [email protected]. The ATLAS Fundraising Oversight Committee, chaired by the ATLAS Vice President, reviews and approves all proposed fundraisers just prior to the monthly ATLAS meetings. Sponsors will be notified upon approval of a proposed fundraiser. Help Wanted: There are many current and upcoming opportunities to get involved and help our Titans. These include:

• Concessions: An adult is needed to open the stand for the Treasury Team during the spring season. • Hospitality: Assist with arrangements for special events next year. • Nominating Committee: Help develop and present a slate of candidates to serve on the ATLAS Board of Directors (BOD)

for next year. The election is held at the May ATLAS meeting. • Titan Classic Golf Tournament: This annual event is held in May at the Lowes Island Country Club. Another co-chair is

needed to assist Dave Ledwell in organizing the event, and volunteers are needed to help with many other aspects. • Project Graduation: This is an all-night event held in June for Dominion seniors to celebrate their graduation from high

school. Suzanne Cooper and Cindy Donahue are co-chairing this event. Volunteers are needed to help with entertainment, refreshments, decorations, prizes, ticket sales and promotion, and security.

• ATLAS Scholarships: Help solicit applications from graduating seniors who are candidates for the award, and determine the recipients.

• Titan Varsity Club: This committee supports the various athletic programs at Dominion. ATLAS Information: For more information, please join us at an ATLAS meeting or go to the DHS ATLAS PTO website found on www.dominionhigh.com. For events/activities, visit our events website at www.DHSATLAS.myevent.com. The ATLAS meetings are held in the DHS Media Center and begin at 7:30 PM on the dates listed below. The theme for this year is “Making Responsible Choices” and we have planned some special presentations for your benefit:

• April 20: The Chalk Guy, a nationally renowned speaker will give a visual presentation about making responsible choices. He will also give a presentation to students earlier in the day.

• May 18: There will be a Volunteer Appreciation Reception and the election of the ATLAS Board of Directors (BOD). • June 15: This meeting will focus on committees to wrap up business for the year.

We Couldn’t Do It Without You!!! The DHS Breakfast Club would like to thank our current corporate sponsors: Atlanta Bread Company Ashburn Bagel Shop The Corner Bakery Chick-Fil-A A special thank you as well to Bloom. Their weekly donations of butter and juice have been much appreciated over the years. It is with regret that the local store informed us that their corporate office will no longer allow donations. Even with the above-mentioned support DHS Breakfast Club is in need of just about everything: juice, cream cheese, butter, jelly, napkins, coffee, hot chocolate packets, Costco gift cards The DHS staff and students are always so appreciative of any and all donations provided by our wonderful community. It is a privilege and a pleasure to provide them with not only breakfast but a place that they can come to socialize and study. Not a bad way to start the day! We would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest volunteer, Michelle Ladd! If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please email Catherine Lyddon at [email protected] or call her at 703-433-1193.

Music Man

April 30 - May 3 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30, Sunday at 3 PM.

Come see Harold Hill, a con-man traveling salesman posing as a band leader, arrive in River City planning to set up a boys’ band and rip off all the parents in town for the money for band uniforms and instruments, and then plan to skip town before they arrive. But in this all-American classic broadway musical set in 1912, optimism, high hopes for the future, and moral responsibility win out. Things don’t work out as he planned when Hill finds himself falling for the town’s librarian and develops personal relationships with many of the River City citizens. When the mayor discovers his identity, he tries to run Hill out own town. One by one the townspeople begin to realize that he has brought much joy to the town since he arrived. Although Marian discovers he’s a fake, she ultimately defends him and wins his heart. You’ll go out humming all the terrific broadway tunes and find yourself singing along with the band as you enjoy this classic American musical!

Many fun activities will be provided throughout the evening including music, dancing, carnival games, casino games, etc. We will also provide food and beverages. Attention: Project Graduation Dominion High School 21326 Augusta Drive Sterling, VA 20164

Your child will not be required to present a ticket at the door for entry. We will have the signed agreement on-site to validate their entry into the event. Tickets will not be available at the door the evening of the event. Seniors from the class of 2009 that attended the event last year had a fantastic time. We intend to make this year's event even more exciting, building on the great work done by last year's planning committee. Volunteers are needed for all committees as well as chaperones to attend the event on the evening of June 20th. If you are the type of person that has ideas and wants to be involved in the execution of one of your child's most memorable high school experiences, please contact our volunteer coordinator Suzanne Cooper at [email protected]. We'd love to have you on board. In the meantime, please look for details and further updates in upcoming newsletters or other channels. Keep this event in mind as you plan your own graduation celebrations and please talk positively to your senior about this celebration and urge him or her to attend. Our goal is to get as many of the graduating seniors to attend the event as possible. We want this to be an enduring tradition at Dominion High Schoo.

Titan “T” Market Contract

Thank you for participating in the 3rd annual Dominion High School Titan “T” Market!

This sale is modeled after England’s hugely popular “car boot sale” where vendors sell new or unwanted items right out of the trunk or “boot” of their car! You will have a parking space for your car and a second space behind or beside your vehicle to display your items for sale. In order to have a safe and enjoyable event, all vendors must comply with the following sales rules and conditions:

1. Per Loudoun County Public School policy: The following items are prohibited and/or not allowed to be sold at the event:

a. Fireworks, flammable goods or anything that could cause a fire. b. ANY type of weapon, gun or sword (even replica or ornament) c. Any counterfeit goods (such as copies of music, dvds, etc.) d. Any stolen goods e. Out of date foods f. Cigarettes /Tobacco or Alcohol g. Pornographic Material h. Living creatures i. No refreshments, drinks or baked goods may be sold. (Dominion High School Band reserves all rights to sales of these items.)

2. Vendor’s vehicles must be in place by 7:30 am at the latest, to allow adequate time for set-up of merchandise, which will continue until 8am. The market will officially open to buyers at 8am.

3. For the safety of the buyers and pedestrians, all vendor vehicles must remain in their allotted space for the duration of the event.

4. All merchandise, display and packing materials must be removed by the vendor prior to leaving the event.

5. Vendors are responsible for any and all transactions that take place during the event and all sales are final. Claims made with regard to the condition of any items sold are solely the responsible of the vendor. Dominion High School is not responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen items or for any transaction between a buyer and a seller. The event coordinators reserve the right to remove, for the remainder of the event, any vendor who violates the regulations listed above.

6. This event will be held, rain or shine. Please plan accordingly.

I, _____________________________________as a vendor at the Dominion High School “T”market sale, agree to the conditions as stated above. Attention ALL “Fightin’ Titans” Football Fans

Hello, I hope this letter finds everyone doing well. Thanks for a fantastic Fall 2008 season. I believe we made great strides in getting our program on the map and into playoff contention. Our schedule has changed and we have upgraded our scrimmages to include North Stafford High School and Stone Bridge High School. I want to get everyone up to date on the progress for our 2009 football season. Our 2009 play-off push began November 10, 2008. We meet to lift & condition EVERY day except FRIDAY from 8:00 AM until 8:45 AM. Also, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM. We have had some encouraging numbers over the months, however, we need to take the next step in order to be successful. I am asking our parents, players, and coaches to work together and make this a priority. We are also in the process of getting our football website up and running so our lines of communication are always open. Players are encouraged to attend our morning sessions and bring a towel to shower before school. We lift and run in the morning in order to help all of our athletes no matter their sport. This will only enhance their overall performance over the seasons. In order for us to be successful… it is essential that we come together as a team for each morning session and build camaraderie. We are in the process of assessing our strength, speed, and quickness that will carry us to the next level.
