DON COLEMAN & FAMILY JULY 4TH GRAND MARSHAL

Long time resident and community leader, Don Coleman was well represented in the 2020 Independence Day Parade. Don led the parade, along with his entire family: Don's wife, Diane...his three Children, Don II, Darrell, and Dana, their spouses, and their children. Lake, but were able to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in Lake restoration damages. A major dredging program helped to save the integrity of the Lake. Don, again, helped lead the team to build the swim and dock area on C Point, which has become a very popular place for families and children to enjoy the lake. Don's wife, Diane, has been active in several clubs and was co-editor of the WL Newsletter in the 1990's. The Coleman children have all been strong supporters of volunteering, giving of their time and talents to make Weatherby Lake a better place for the rest of us. Don Coleman II has served for several years on the Board of Directors of WLIC and has chaired several committees, including the Rules & Regulations Committee. Darrell Coleman has led the WL Irish-American Club for many years. They organize and direct the St. Patrick's parade and festivities, raising thousands that is donated totally to the WL Police Department and used to purchase much needed supplies for the safety and security of our community. Dana was instrumental in founding the Jr. Sailing Program that has provided hundreds of young sailors the skills to enjoy this sport. Indeed, the Coleman family has contributed in numerous ways for half a century. No matter what direction you look, you see the footprint of a Coleman. When asked what words he had for the community, Don said that he hoped that the younger and newer residents would become more community minded and "not let him down". It's nice to join clubs, but, there is always a need for help in so many areas. Contact the WLIC for areas

and committees that could use assistance occasionally. We ALL need to do our part to make our community strong, safe, and fun. MANY THANKS TO DON COLEMAN AND FAMILY FOR UNCOUNTABLE AREAS OF HELP OVER 5 DECADES. CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING THE 2020 GRAND MARSHAL.

HOW DOES YOUR WLL NEWSLETTER WORK?

Your Weatherby Lake Living newsletter comes to you through the efforts of many. The final assembly is done by a two-volunteer team, Editor Pat Medill and Layout volunteer Beth Moraitis. Pat begins the process by gathering news from all clubs, committees, and other sources. Then Pat's job is to get the information into a readable format, check wording and accuracy, and if it meets the standards of WLL (no unkind accusations or negative political opinions). Beth then takes the edited information given and makes it fit in her template that is arranged for familiarity and efficiency. She strives to make everyone's space look great and hopefully informative. Accuracy checks are done on every piece of information that we receive, however...we don't assume the final authority for total accuracy. Each piece of information has it's own author and we make specific efforts to respect their personal style and not challenge their individual presentation. We are the messenger, but we don't know what we don't know, and occasionally errors or omissions do occur. We apologize. The finished copy is typically emailed to every resident on our receiving list, around the first of each month. The volume of news and/or the amount of

City Hall Office Hours Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Welcome to the ‘dog days of Summer’ Your City is still very much in the business of doing all the things we have always done and you have come to expect including, issuing building permits, dog and car tags, mowing right - of –ways, fixing streets and sewage pumps and our 24/7 Police Department is keeping the City safe. Our excellent city staff has persevered as all of you have during this Covid-19 Pandemic. The City Hall doors are open every weekday from 8 until 4, five days a week. We just ask that for now you please wear a mask into City Hall. Thanks to everyone for your patience. The 4th of July celebration has come and gone. Personally experiencing over 30 years of these celebrations here at Weatherby, it’s my belief that it was probably one of the very best! My personal thanks go out to Tanya Finn and her team for coordinating all of the events with the help of Rick Neece, WLIC President, and Police Chief Kevin Davis and his ‘all hands on deck’ crew. Our fireworks display was one of the best I have ever seen anywhere and we reached our 100% contribution goal….thanks to all that contributed! The parade route was slightly changed and it may stay that way in future years. C-Point and Venita access areas were well monitored and seemingly everyone had an awesome time, especially me and my crew! Congratulations go out to Parade Co-Grand Marshalls, Lucas Graham and Don Coleman Sr. In the last nearly 10 years Lucas has become ‘the lawn mowing young gentleman to go to’ around Weatherby Lake. Don Coleman Sr has become the ‘God Father’ of water quality of Weatherby Lake. His selfless efforts over the decades is legendary not only here at Weatherby Lake but the entire metropolitan area lakes communities. The Coleman Family has been very active in many facets of Weatherby’s lake life. Thank you Lucas and Don! As we transaction into fall and (dirty word warning) ‘election season’ please keep in mind sign regulations. Signs must be 15 feet from the streets pavement edge. A more complete list of rules can be found at the bottom of Chief Davis’ column. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. The Historical Committee that restored the Anders/Jacks Cemetery is looking for a volunteer to mow the cemetery periodically. For further information please contact Trina Henke 816 853-4094 Be safe and well and enjoy the lake in the remaining warm days of summer! Steve Clark Mayor

WLIC As we approach fall, after a very unusual summer, we have been blessed with much volunteer support during these trying times. Adhoc committees have been formed to provide guidance with new lake activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking and remote control boats. A parent/youth group has also been meeting to provide leadership guidance and suggested fun activities on the lake. The WLIC supports these volunteer efforts. Our water patrol team will continue to monitor the lake access areas so please continue to wear your wristbands this fall. Recently, we completed the dock, boat and lake accessory sticker inspections. In a couple of weeks we will receive and install four new concrete docks that will be installed at C-Point to replace the older 4’x24’ WLIC docks.

1

A special thank you to all of those who helped support the Wildflower and Warm Grass project on Barry Road. We hope you enjoyed seeing the flowers this summer.

2

Finally, the WLIC has received a Platte County Storm Water Management Grant which will be used to improve the environmental friendly appearance of our property at the corner of Barry Road and Westside Drive. Stay tuned for further details.

Do you know the Weatherby Lake cove names? If not, you can look for the new signs we are putting out to help you identify where you are.

Hello fellow Weatherby Lakers. I hope that you have been able to find some form of levity in the midst of this pandemic. We live in the right place to do that. The Yacht Club has been holding our summer races with some adjustments to the schedule and also some modifications to our race committee….but all in all we are having fun.

The Light up the Lake event in June was a big hit and many of you participated. Everyone was amazed by the turnout and it was incredible to watch. Thank you all who participated.

Now for the next event and one that I am very excited to announce. On August 8th, the Yacht club along with Laura Welch will host Quixotic, a Kansas City based performing dance troupe that defines themselves as a “Contemporary Aerial and Circus Arts” act. They are a world renown team that finds themselves sitting at home while they would normally be performing someplace around the world. We are lucky to have them right here in our back yard. So, we are bringing them to Weatherby Lake to perform on the Lakeside lawn of the Castle and the event is open to all residents of Weatherby Lake. The generosity and enthusiasm of Laura Welch is making this happen. The audience will watch the event by boat anchored and rafted up along the shore of the Castle.

Details are being worked out as I type but the date is carved in stone. Quixotic is performing for tips as they call it. The WLYC will post on our Website a promotion advertisement that will be made out by Quixotic for the event where would be audience attendees will be able to donate to them. We ask if you plan to attend to please make a contribution. We will not be checking boats or anything like that. This is all up to the kindness of your heart. And there is no deadline to your contribution. Even after the event you may decide to send a little more.

See you there.

On Saturday of each month at 7:00 PM, thru May, volunteer Weatherby Lake residents rotate hosting a casual social gathering in their homes. There are two options for the gatherings each month, either a casual sit-down meal or a Happy Hour style gathering with just appetizers. A host determines the number of guests they have. Neither the host nor the guest knows the identity of the other guests ahead of time.

The focus for both styles of the small group gatherings is not on the food, but rather on meeting neighbors, getting to know one another and developing friendships.

As always, KNOW THY NEIGHBOR will take a summer break.

Please watch for news for the '20/'21 season later this fall.

HELPING N E I G H B O R S

NHN is a community program for all of us to help each other in times of need, such as illness or other circumstances that limit our abilities, the death of a loved one, shut-ins, or in any way that one might need simple short term assistance. We do not take the place of professions or replace family responsibilities. We are your next door neighbors who are willing to volunteer help where we can, and we need YOU to help be a part of watching out for one another.

The list of Weatherby residents who live alone is being

during this time when the well being and safety of our single seniors is more at

risk. This list will be kept confidential.

If you live alone, or know of a neighbor or resident who lives

alone, especially if they are a senior or elderly,

please contact us. Watching out for one another is just part of being a responsible

caring neighbor.

You’re right, Silver. We were just a bit ahead of our time, in those thrilling days

of yesteryear.

But now, my style is all the rage, again. Just look at all

the greenhorns following my lead and wearing masks

these days.

Shucks, it’s not that tough to do. Why, I haven’t taken off my mask since 1933!!

And look at what great shape I’m in.

Besides, I want to stay healthy and ready, in hopes that SAV is able to hold this year’s Oktoberfest at C-Point. Keep your hoovies

crossed.

Oh, and sorry, Big Fella – you’ll be bunkin’ in the barn that night, since I’ll be riding my favorite Seahorse to the party!

If you would like to make a contribution, please contact Pat Botbyl 816-326-8268

Thank you for your continuing generosity as SAV supports members of our Armed Forces
