French ImmersionSeventy countries in the world aremembers of the francophonecommunity.  The French languageopens doors worldwide.  Le françaisouvre des portes à travers le monde. At Don Valley JHS, French Immersionstudents receive 50% of theirinstruction in French in a variety of subjects.  By the time theyleave Don Valley, they are fluent in both of Canada's officiallanguages.  Grade 9 students have the possibility of gainingcommunity hour credit for peer tutoring in French.  Suivez votrepassion en français!

Special Support ProgramsFormal support is provided for students who have ESL, DD andHSP requirements.  These students experience specializedprograms in a small classroom setting with caring teachers andeducational assistants who provide individualized programmingdesigned to build upon their strengths.  In our Language Lab,students use various software to improve language skills.

TechnologyComputer labs dedicated to Grade 7 and 8 students enable them tolearn correct keyboarding technique as well as learn currentsoftware (e.g. Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel) in order tocomplete homework/assignments and prepare for the transition tosecondary education and the workplace. 

MusicStudents enjoy music in various forms at Don Valley.  VibrantStrings and Band programs are run by specialized teachers. Morning announcements play current music while students preparefor class.  If you enjoy singing, you can join our choir.  Music Nightsfeature Grade 7, 8 and 9 student performers.

AthleticsDon Valley JHS has received platinum recognition from the OntarioHealth and Physical Education Association for qualityprogramming.  Specialized Phys. Ed. teachers help studentsdevelop and improve their skills in a wide range of competitive andnon-competitive team sports.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Here at Don Valley, the fun student life begins even beforethe bell rings!  At half past 8, you can find friendly faceschatting in the halls, students studying in the library, orfriends grabbing a bite to eat in the cafeteria.  By 8:45 a.m.,students are already in their designated homerooms.  Afterthat, everyone heads out to their next two classes.  DVprovides its student body with a vast number of courses topick from so students have the opportunity to try out andexperience various subjects.  The teachers at DV also makethe students' journey more exciting by providing a finebalance between fun, challenging assignments, and variousinteresting teaching methods. At 10:33 we have "Break",which allows time for everyone to go to their lockers, gettheir books for the next class, and munch on some snacks. Lunch is from 12:23 to 1:23 p.m.  There are many activitiesat lunch to join.  After two more periods, the day comes toan end at 3:03.  Every day is an adventure with lots ofopportunities to learn new things, have fun, and build lastingfriendships.

What Sets Us Apart

In Grades 7 and 8, students are beginning to plan for theirfuture.  Grade 9 students have an opportunity to choosefrom various elective courses to determine their interestsand strengths.  Grade 9 elective courses offered: Business - Explore areas of Business: Marketing, Finance,Production, Human Resources, Accounting, andEntrepreneurship. Drama - Active and creative exploration of dramaticstorytelling through a variety of performances.  Students willparticipate in various school assemblies.Design & Technology -  Students will use technology andcomputer concepts to design, develop and build in aCAD/CAM design facility.Information Technology -  In a world of constantlychanging technology, this course will prepare you for a worldof business and communication that relies increasingly onelectronic technology.Music - Refine your technique and musicianship by takingeither Band or Strings courses. Visual Arts - Learn to visually express your thoughts andideas using unique materials and tools.
