MCAA Awards Exhibition In the Gallery August 11-28
Don’t miss it!
With current social distancing requirements we are still using our Gallery for some classes for a while. We are now starting a more normal Term 3 but still under Phase
4 COVID restrictions—see our “Atwell Roadmap” insert.
What’s on in the Gallery • Atwell Road Map out of COVID/Gallery
Programme/COVID Capers • Entry Forms—MCAA Awards / Junior
MCAA Awards
Still an uncertain environment! Hopefully the WA Govt will move to Phase 5 of their roadmap in the next few weeks which will assist our forward planning!
Hi everyone, Well, everybody seemed to have a great time in our shortened Term 2 programme and the school holiday activities were absolutely amazing. We’re delighted that many of you have signed up for Term 3 starting this week. So welcome back all our participants and a special hello to our new students.
As you will realise, the unfortunate situation with the rise in coronavirus cases in Victoria has meant that the WA Govt has delayed the start of phase 5 of their roadmap to recovery. Under phase 5 the “allow 2 square metre per person rule” would have been eased (and we were expecting that to have happened before term 3 started). So Social Distancing is still in force, room arrangements can be a bit different and will still have to use the Gallery for some classes but we are trying to run all our normal activities.
The initial pop-up in the gallery has now been replaced by COVID Capers, a showcase of what people have been up to during the lockdown. There is some amazing work up around the walls, so please come and have a look; it is so good to see how everybody has responded to the challenge of working alone. In one or two cases the teachers have proved inspirational and the results of joint projects are on display. We expect this exhibition to evolve over the next week and to include some community activity.
We are going ahead with the MCAA Awards in August however, because of continuing social distancing and the 2 square metre rule per person, we still don’t know if we will be able to have an awards night. (The Gallery is 76 sq m so the maximum number of people we can have at one time is still 38). If this eases at anytime during the exhibition, we will quickly arrange an awards presentation (even without a formal presentation, there will still be plenty of prizes). Until next time, stay well and
Enjoy your art … the Atwell Gnomes
MCAA AWARDS
We are really looking forward to an exciting exhibition
Adult Awards are open to financial members only Junior Awards are open to financial members or children
sponsored by financial members (eg grandchildren or other talented children you know)
Please check the conditions of entry carefully before signing your form
• Look out for size restrictions—please measure your work before bringing it in
• As there are prizes you can only enter you own original, unaided creative work, based on your own ideas and reference material.
• Work to be hung should have a secure cord (not bare wire). Photo frames are not suitable to display work on our hanging system and we don’t have a Velcro wall
It is frustrating and embarrassing for both you and out volunteers if we have to reject work when it doesn’t comply with the conditions that you have signed that you have read and understood. Also when we have to take work out of the gallery because someone points out that it was copied from a published source or created in a workshop/class situation.

It may seem that there has been very little activity at Atwell House during the recent lockdown months but behind the scenes the Potters have been campaigning relentlessly to bring to reality the dream of their new ceramics studio. There have been countless letters, emails, meetings with City of Melville councillors and even the Mayor has visited to see our plans and our current facilities. And at the beginning of July it all came together when the Council voted to fund the design and construction of the new studio to be built on the western end of the Atwell House site. This is the result of the hard work and determination of a dedicated sub-committee led by Barrie-Anne Morgan. We are most grateful the City of Melville and the MCAA for their support through the long process and to Federal, State and Local Government politicians who have listened patiently and supported us for several years as the project grew from a dream to a reality.
And to cap off a brilliant month, our new kiln has arrived and is already in action in the old kiln shed. It was purchased with the assistance of a grant from the Dept. of Industry, Innovations & Science through the office of local MP, Ben Morton. Thanks to all involved, especially Chris Rogers for dealing with all of the paperwork involved in the grant application.
Meanwhile the Potters are hard at work producing soup bowls to be donated to the 'Empty Bowls' project, a fundraising event in support of FoodBank. On Sunday August 30 at Christ Church Grammar School, visitors will purchase a bowl to keep and which will be filled with delicious soup and bread for a
warming lunch.
Anyone interested in joining the South of the River
Potters’ Club is welcome to drop in on a
Wednesday morning and chat to one of the
members. in Room 2/3 at Atwell House. You might
also find them hard at work in the ‘green shed’
behind the gallery. You can now find us at https://

Monthly Groups meeting at Atwell
Alfred Cove Art Society
last Thurs evening of the month
This & That …. There are a variety of groups that meet at Atwell House. Some are clubs or organisations in their own right, others are run by MCAA and you can just turn up and pay on the day. Come along and meet others with similar interests in a supportive environment. If you can think up a new activity for Atwell see Chris or Joy.
ATWELL HOUSE SPINNERS spinning/knitting/chatting
Well we still cannot use the kitchen but thank goodness the boiling water tank is operating in the old kitchen. We could not manage without our "cuppa"!
We were able to meet in Room 4 last week because our numbers were down and the weather was not right for the verandah. Keep coming. We all need the companionship.
Gail C. brought in a loom woven bed spread which is a work of art. Well done, Gail. Plenty of socks are still being knitted. Not many spinning wheels are brought along this weather.
We would like to hear from Heather. We cannot contact her by phone so Heather, if you get this message please ring one of us. We hope all is righting itself for you.
Get well wishes still go to Leonie and Dot's daughter, Alison and anyone else who is not feeling the best. Everybody keep warm and still watch where you put your feet!
Members are always welcome to join our friendly self-help spinning & knitting group. Every Tues from 12.30 to
3.30pm in Room 4, on the verandah or in the Gallery.
Alfred Cove Art Society have not been meeting for a few months but hope to restart in July.
See you all soon!

GalleryShop
Have you checked out the shop next to the Office recently?
Quite often we hear people say that they didn’t even realise we had a
shop at Atwell! However, since it has been to entrance to
the Office during COVID more people have seen it!
Stephanie Zuvela is currently restocking
the shop so please take a look soon. If you think you would like to be a new supplier contact the Office and we will
arrange for Stephanie to contact you.
ATWELL HOUSE HALLWAY GALLERY
We like to make the front hall of the house look inviting and arty so are once again calling for interested painters/drawers/printmakers etc to put their names on a new list in the Office.
No hanging fee, 25% Commission on sales.
Please be aware that this area is not under constant supervision and it does get pretty windy through there so works are placed there at your own risk. But many people do pass through this area and will see your work! New and experienced artists are welcome. This can be a good way to start exhibiting if you have not
done so before.
Works need to be small to medium in size, preferably on canvas with a secure hanging cord. Label back and front stating artist, title, medium and price. And provide a list for the Office.
