Generations Speaker Series and PotluckOn Friday, May 24, Charlie Wallace, retired chaplain at Willamette University, will join us for the Generations potluck luncheon held in the church dining room. Charlie will talk to us about his experiences dealing with students at Willamette during his time as chaplain there. We hope you can join us at noon to enjoy the fellowship, food and Charlie’s stories. Our May luncheon will be the last one until September and it looks like 2013-14 possibilities for speakers are outstanding.
Changing the World, One Life at a Time Peace with Justice Sunday, May 26, 2013All local church offering dollars are forwarded to your annual conference which retains half of the proceeds and forwards the other half to the General Council on Finance and Administration. Every annual conference has a Peace with Justice Coordinator chosen by the conference and the committee headed up by that coordinator determines how the conference money will be used. Many conferences give grants to local churches and other United Methodist programs that promote peace with justice; others use the money for training in conflict resolution or other education initiatives within the conference.United Methodists in Columbus, Ohio’s Hilltop community are using a 2012 Peace with Justice Grant to help change the culture of conflict and violence that plagues their neighborhood. The Greater Hilltop Shalom Zone is using its $3,000 grant to begin volunteer-run, community-focused mediation and peacemaking programs.Shalom Zones are centers for Christ-centered spiritual awakening, peacemaking, and economic and community vitalization. The Hilltop Shalom Zone is a collaborative ministry initiated by eight United Methodist congregations, joined by social service agencies, educational institutions, law enforcement, and local business and social service organizations.First UMC is receiving our Peace with Justice special offering May 26, 2013. Please mark any giving you would like to go to this offering “Peace with Justice” or use the special envelope that will be in your bulletin that Sunday. (continued on page 2)

CHPIn 2012 the needs of CHP clients were great. The donations they received were generous yet many individuals left their offices with information and referrals only. Needs totaling $185,994 were presented on their intake forms but only $45,807 was distributed… 25% of the ask total. As their clients have multiple needs, closer to 50% of their clients were helped. Rent and utilities remain the greatest needs and grants have been submitted to help bridge that gap during the coming year.

This is an awesome retreat for area youth grades 6-12, sponsored by Salem First UMC Youth Ministries. It is a fun-filled weekend of music, worship, friends, prayer, service and, most of all, FUN!This year it’s all about Discovering Your Passion! The excitement kicks off Friday evening at 7 p.m. with games, music and worship. On Saturday, we jump into high gear to discover what ‘sparks’ your world and then put it into practice at the Saturday of Service. After a hard day of work, we will want some serious playtime, so we are heading up to Bullwinkle’s Family Fun Center for an evening of laser tag, games, go-karts and pizza. Then Sunday morning we rock worship together led by LifeSong and the youth of Salem First at the annual Youth Sunday service! Following fellowship time after service with the congregation, we will close the retreat and depart for home.Event details and registration forms can be found on the youth website at <www.salemfirstumcyouthorg/praystrong>. Cost for the retreat is $30 per person registered before MAY 5, which includes admission to Bullwinkle’s. After May 5, the cost is $40.(Youth are encouraged to register through their local church, but all youth are welcome, whether a member of a local church or not. Youth will not be able to drive themselves to Wilsonville for liability reasons.)

Food bank collectionSo far for 2013 we have collected over 34,308 lbs. of food for the Jason Lee Food Bank! A special thanks goes to the generous donors who have given to the Phil Hanni memorial fund. Our goal for this year (by Dec. 31) is to reach over 60,000 lbs. of donations for feeding the hungry. Might we possibly pass this goal?
Dinner honors Cambodia missionaryOn Saturday, May 4, at 5: 30 p.m. United Methodist Missionary Katherine Parker will be honored at a dinner at Doris Bennett’s home (5115 Cherie Court SE in Salem). Second generation sensationsSome families produce notable offspring—remember the Barrymores, the Gandhis, and the Windsors? On the flip side there are second generations that did not impress—like the daughters of Howard Hughes and Marie Antoinette, or the sons of Leif Ericson and King Tut.* Closer to home, you’ve got to think highly about the second generation of bakers who serve as volunteers for the Mission Café. These are young people who roll up their sleeves at various times and whip up tasty treats for Café customers, but only on Sundays, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Combine these goodies with big time beverages and snappy service and you set the stage for a congregation with stars in their eyes. Although the Mission Café boasts a roster of a few men, the great majority of our inventory is provided by the ladies of the church. Due to attrition, we would welcome adding five new names to our volunteer lists at this time. Thank you.
— Submitted by Art Tidey* A free cookie to The Spire readers who are incredibly smart and knew King Tut had no heirs. He was a PWC: Pharaoh Without Children.

Thank you…Many thanks to the people of this congregation for your expressions of care and concern during Phil’s year and a half of declining health. Your thoughtfulness was a ray of hope and comfort for both of us.Special thanks to all who helped make the memorial service for Phil a grand celebration of his life. I am sure Phil enjoyed and appreciated it.Many thanks to Katie Carpenter, Pastor Dan, and Sue Cridge and “crew” for their invaluable and patient help in numerous ways. Also—our appreciation to those who gave so generously to the Jason Lee Food Bank in Phil’s name. Again—Phil is pleased!Shalom, Erin and Carl Hanni
