YOUR HEALTH

November is National Caregivers Month, a time to recognize the 90 million family caregivers who are now caring for a loved one with a chronic condition, disability or the frailties of age. The number of family caregivers continues to increase; now nearly 39% of all adult Americans - up from 30% in 2010 - are caring for loved ones in their homes.

A number of factors are driving the increase:• Alzheimer’s – More than 15 million family caregivers are now

providing care to loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease.

• Children with Special Needs – The number of parents caring for children with special needs is increasing

• Wounded Veterans – As many as 1 million Americans are caring in their homes for service members from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who are suff ering from traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder or other wounds or illnesses.

While the largest percentage of family caregivers is still women age 60 or older, men are increasingly likely to help with caregiving, as are younger Americans between the ages of 18 and 29.

Family caregivers are the backbone of the nation’s long-term care system, now providing $450 billion of unpaid care each year. That’s more than total Medicaid funding, and twice as much as homecare and nursing home services combined. Almost half of family care-givers perform complex medical/ nursing tasks for their loved ones, such as managing multiple medications, providing wound care and operating specialized medical equipment.

Recognizing and Thanking Family CaregiversMartha Sitler

With all that is required of them, it is important that family care-givers are supported and take care of their own needs as well.

Here are 10 Tips for Family Caregivers from the Caregiver Ac-tion Network, a national non-profi t providing education, peer sup-port and resources to family caregivers. www.caregiveraction.org

1. Seek support from other caregivers. You are not alone!

2. Take care of your own health so that you can be strong enough to take care of your loved one.

3. Accept off ers of help and suggest specifi c things people can do to help you.

4. Learn how to communicate eff ectively with medical professionals.

5. Caregiving is hard work, so take respite breaks often.

6. Watch out for signs of depression and don’t delay getting profes-sional help when you need it.

7. Be open to new technologies that can help you care for your loved one.

8. Organize medical information so it’s up to date and easy to fi nd.

9. Make sure legal documents are in order.

10. Give yourself credit for doing the best you can in one of the toughest jobs there is!

ASK THE SHERIFF…

You’ve heard it before: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” yet many of us fi nd it hard to resist the temptations

of scammers and think being swindled won’t happen to us. Although it can happen to anyone, fi nancial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that the National Council on Aging reports that senior scams are considered “the crime of the 21st century.” I don’t talk to anyone on the phone I don’t personally know, isn’t that enough to protect me from scammers?

Con artists are smart, and they know how to prey on the vulnerabilities of older adults; they not only invade the homes of seniors through the telephone, but target seniors through the computer, mail, newspapers and magazines with the promise of miracle cures, fi nancial security and luxury prizes. They have even been known to telephone “Nana, Grammy, or Pop-Pop” posing as a grandchild in trouble to get a concerned grandparent to wire money to the fraudulent caller. How do I spot a scammer who comes to my door?

The best rule of thumb is to know who you’re dealing with. If you haven’t heard of the individual or company, check with the Better Business Bureau. Better yet, don’t give money or sign any document until you fully understand what you’re entering into.

For example, service providers advertising repairs to homes and automobiles following the recent hail damage storm should not expect payment until after the work is done. Before signing a contract for any repair, be sure to have someone you trust look over the contract to understand all costs associated with the service.

What steps can I take to make sure I’m never swindled?• Don’t buy anything promising dramatic cures• Never wire money to someone you don’t know. And in the

case of wiring money to someone you think you know, be sure to fi rst take some time to gather enough information to assure the legitimacy of the request

• Look closely at offers that come in the mail and know you are under no obligation to pay for anything you did not order

• Get second opinions on any repair work• Never give a caller fi nancial information of any kind and

never call a 900 number to “claim a prize” • Stay current on types of scams by calling the National Fraud

Information Center at 800-876-7060 or visit their web site at www.fraud.org for current fraud alerts

• Remember — you have the right, ability and power to say no• Report con games to the police, the consumer protection of-

fi ce, district attorney’s offi ce or consumer advocacy group

Pennsylvania is home to almost one million men and women who have served our country honorably and sacrifi ced a great deal to protect our nation. They are entitled to benefi ts and a quality of care worthy of their sacrifi ce. That is why I am committed to help-ing our veterans and their families so that when our troops return home, they receive the benefi ts they have earned.

That is the reason that I maintain a Veterans Service site in my District Offi ce at 210 George Street, Suite 201, in Muhlenberg Township. Every Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., VFW State Service Offi cer Audrey Bergstresser, a native of Berks County and Vietnam War veteran is available by appointment. I invite veter-

Honoring Veterans and Active Duty MilitaryState Senator Judith L. Schwank, 11th Senatorial District

ans and their family members who need assistance in applying for benefi ts to make an appointment with State Service Offi cer Berg-stresser by calling her at 717.234.7927 to make an appointment to meet with her at my District Offi ce to receive free information and assistance for government benefi ts including VA health care, compensation, pension, education and dependent benefi ts. Walk ins are welcome.

Surviving spouses also can meet with State Service Offi cer Berg-stresser to learn about their eligibility for VA benefi ts. She will visit veterans in their homes if disabilities prevent them from coming to the offi ce for appointments. Call her at 717.234.7927 to arrange for a visit.

As I am out and about in the community, I hear so many posi-tive comments about the outstanding help State Service Offi cer Bergstresser has provided to veterans who have come to my offi ce to seek her assistance. If you are a veteran or the family member of a veteran who is experiencing diffi culty with your claim or appeal with the Department of Veterans Affairs, I urge you come to my offi ce and meet with State Service Offi cer Bergstresser. She may be able to help you.

On Veterans Day, November 11, I encourage everyone to take a moment to honor and remember all of our veterans who have served in our military and the men and women on active duty that are serving honorably and proudly across the world to fi ght for the freedoms we have come to enjoy in the United States. God Bless America!

During the Medicare annual enrollment period, which runs until December 7, all Medicare benefi ciaries have the option to change their Medicare plans for the coming year to better match their needs. This includes anyone using original Medicare, Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plans. There are changes to Medicare plans this year so it is essential that you investigate your needs, review your current plans and evaluate the best fi t for you.

Do not assume that what you selected last year or the year before will remain the same. Plans come and go, especially when Medi-

READY! GET SET! GO!

For Medicare Annual Open Enrollmentcare makes changes to how they pay the plans. Be sure that your plan will be around in 2015. Insurers can change plan benefi ts, provider networks and what they charge you per month. They will send you an annual notice of change letter that tells you what is new or changed in premiums and annual deductibles, co-pays or co-insurance, out of pocket cost for drugs, and whether your doctor still participates in your plan.

Medicare recipients reaching the drug donut hole will benefi t from lower costs in 2015. The gap in prescription drug coverage starts when someone reaches the initial coverage limit, estimated at $2,960 in 2015. It ends when the total amount spent is $6,680 and the catastrophic cover begins. During the donut hole, individuals pay 65 percent for generic drugs and 45 percent for brand name drugs. It is anticipated that the donut hole will close by 2020.

If you want to make changes to your present plans, you can use the tools on www.Medicare.gov. or give APPRISE a call, at Berks Encore, for an individual appointment. Call 610-374-3195 x208 to schedule an appointment at any one of our centers or to speak with a counselor over the phone.

APPRISE is a free, unbiased, and confi dential counseling service of Pennsylvania’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). The Pennsylvania Department of Aging created APPRISE to help all Medicare benefi ciaries understand their Medicare op-tions. This unbiased, statewide network of trained volunteers helps people answer questions, evaluate plans, and even enroll into plans online. You can also stop at the APPRISE room at Senior Expo.

How You Can Give and Receive With a Charitable Gift AnnuitySteady lifetime payments, tax advantages and generosity are appealing to manyby Nikki Shingle, Charitable Services Representative at Everence

Security and generosity are fi nancial issues that many in retire-ment consider important, but what if the two could be addressed in a single way?

More people are learning about the advantages of a charitable gift annuity. It is an often overlooked but appealing option with a num-ber of features: a lifetime of fi xed regular payments, tax advantages, and the opportunity to support a favorite charity, such as Berks Encore and our mission.

Here’s how it works. Let’s say you make a gift – using cash, stocks, bonds or other securities – to a charitable foundation, such as Mennonite Foundation, an affi liate of Everence. A gift annuity is a promise that you will receive, in exchange for the gift, fi xed payments for life. When you pass away, Berks Encore receives the remaining gift.

What’s more, the gift can mean a charitable deduction in the year the gift is made, and a portion of the annuity payments may be tax free. The payment rates are based on age, and many people fi nd the rates attractive.

GENEROSITY WITH A PLAN A gift annuity is often known as a “planned gift” and to charities

like ours, these kinds of gifts are increasingly important because they help fund our work and mission.

In fact, in 2013, charities across the country issued more than 8,000 annuities with a total face value of $262 million, according to a recent survey report by the American Council on Gift Annuities.

The applications are generally simple to complete and the contract is easy to understand. Plus, donors can choose between immediate or deferred annuity options.

A gift annuity may also be a component of a more extensive estate plan, so if you are interested, it may be a good idea to talk to your estate attorney or fi nancial advisor.

If you would like to see if a gift annuity may fi t your situation, simply contact Melissah Jablonski, Berks Encore Vice President of Marketing and Development, at (610) 374-3195, x223. You also can learn more about gift annuities at everence.com/gift-annuities.

Everence Charitable Services are administered by Mennonite Foundation and/or Everence Trust Company, affi liates of Everence. Gift annuity payments are dependent on the

fi nancial ability of the issuing entity to pay.

Paula Barron may be new to Berks Encore’s Board, but she is quite familiar with our agency and mission.

“Many years ago, through Ed Barrett I had the pleasure of working with LuAnn Oatman as she and Penny and Dennis from CrossRoads Studios were working on Berks Encore’s rebranding,”

explains Paula. “Prior to the rebranding I really didn’t understand what the role of the agency was in the community. My only knowledge was about the Meals on Wheels program. After the successful rebranding, LuAnn asked if I would serve on the marketing committee. I started to attend the annual community breakfasts, Senior Expo, and the volunteer recognition program. I was most impressed with the advocacy and educational component of the organization in supporting older adults.”

“One thing I am focused on is preventing elder fi nancial abuse,” she continues. “As a community banker, there are many occasions when customers come into the bank asking for our advice related to telemarketing scams, forging of a signature,

outright fraud or unscrupulous ‘professionals’ who overcharge for services to the elderly or use their position of trust to gain compliance. In my role as a board member I would like to continue to educate people about this. In addition, with 10,000 baby boomers retiring each day, over a 19-year period, the need to educate this population about Medicare, social security and retirement is a daunting task. I believe Berks Encore can and will play a key role in helping to educate this population. The staff can’t do it alone; that’s where volunteers come into play and I encourage individuals to donate a few hours of their time to help educate.”

Over the past few years, Paula has had the pleasure of serving on the United Way of Berks County Board of Directors and was instrumental, with a group of great women leaders, in launching Women2Women through the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce. These are two additional outstanding organizations that she is proud to be working with in helping our community be a better place to live and work.

Paula currently serves as the Chief Retail Banking Offi cer for Tompkins VIST Bank. She and her husband Bill have two beautiful daughters – Lauren and Kristen – and are dedicated Penn State football fans!

Berks Encore Board Member Renee’ Dietrich was recently named the Trustee of the Year for 20 14 by the Pennsylvania Library Association. Dietrich is President of the Reading Public Library Board of Trustees.

“There are about 4,000 public library trustees in PA so I was very pleased to receive this honor for the Reading Public Library,” says Dietrich. “It was for my leadership in 2013 during the anniversary year and during the renovation of the branches and the Main Library in 2013-2014. We have a clean, refurbished building that is part of the effort to renew the city. The Reading Public Library is proud of our facility.”

Frank Kasprowicz, Library Director, nominated Dietrich for the award. “Since joining the Board of Trustees in 2013, Reneé has been a tireless advocate and fundraiser for the Reading Public Library.”

In 2012 Dietrich was elected President of the Board of Trustees. During her presidency, she has assisted the library through extensive renovations to the Main Library, celebrated the 250th anniversary, and worked tirelessly to increase fi nancial support from the City, County and community at large. “Reneé stresses the importance of having a 21st century library in Berks County. She believes that the library is more than books, DVDs, and other materials but is also a community center for lifelong learning,” says Kasprowicz.

Dietrich Named “Trustee of the Year”During her tenure Reneé has participated in many meetings,

events, and programs at and for RPL. She marched in the 2013 Holiday Parade in Reading in an 18th century costume to help announce our impending 250th anniversary with other Board members and library employees. She found a site on Penn Street for a temporary library while the Main Library was renovated. She wrote letters to Pennsylvania Representatives and Senators, the Governor, and the Offi ce of Commonwealth Libraries imploring all for support for libraries. She was and has been tireless in her advocacy for our libraries.

Meals on Wheels clients in the Birdsboro area have been enjoying a variety of fresh produce all thanks to the kindness of Annie Hasz and Sean Bonsall. Since June, the clients and cen-ter participants have received fresh produce including peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, beans, eggplant, onions, scallions, herbs and more courtesy of an innovative program run by Annie and Sean.

The couple leases 80 acres of land between Morgantown and Birdsboro, cultivating the farm on three of the acres. Here on Broad Wing Farm they developed a Community Shared Agri-culture program that provides funding for the donations.

What Annie found was that family members wanted to support their farming efforts, but were unable to pick up the produce each week since they lived too far away. She also real-ized that each week there was extra bounty that they could also share with others. It was then that she and Sean decided to reach out to a local group where they could donate the produce and where it would be valued.

After meeting with Birdsboro Center Manager Patty Barker, Annie realized this would be the perfect partnership.

“All the Meals on Wheels clients absolutely love all the pro-duce!” shares Birdsboro Center Manager Patty Barker. “I have received phone calls and notes saying thank you so much. One Meals on Wheels client told me that he loves making Smooth-ies with the fresh produce!”

Sharing Their Bounty“Today we dropped off potatoes, beets, onions, garlic, greens,

herbs and scallions,” Annie says. “We will have produce through Thanksgiving. This is still an abundant time of year for summer produce and the fall harvest is also coming in strong.”

“I think there is a way to make it work for your small business and make it benefi cial for the community,” Annie says of the concept of giving back to the community. “We let our members and friends of our farm chip in and pay for the share so we can donate and grow more. Some weeks we just have an excess of items, so they receive even more. It becomes a weekly routine and is supported by people who support our business. It makes us feel good about what we do, too.”

“It has been absolutely wonderful working along with Annie, and everyone from Broad Wing Farm,” Patty says. “They are so sweet and caring. This has been an awesome program, it would be so nice if more people knew that they could buy shares and donate them out to programs like ours.”

HOW YOU CAN SIGN UPThere are currently 28 members of the CSA program, but

Annie says there is room for more. Through the program, you can purchase one of two shares that include a box of chemical-free produce for 24 weeks:• The Fox Box is a smaller share and includes six to eight diff erent types of

produce and costs $440 for the year.

Another option is to register for CSA and ask that your pro-duce be donated to those in need.

Members can pick up their boxes at the farm each week. The boxes are fi lled with that week’s bounty and include a variety of items. If there is an item in your box that you don’t want, Annie says you can simply swap them out for others that are available. Members also receive weekly emails the night before the pickup that list the vegetables in the box as well as recipes for their use. Those who sign up later in the season receive a pro-rated share.

Annie and Sean also sell their produce at two farmers mar-kets: Eagleview in Chester County and Parkwood in Philadel-phia.

24 A WWII Combat Veteran Remembers

Objective Haigler Our “G” Company was to take Haigler. First, “E” and “F”

companies of our Battalion were to pass through our defensive positions and get ready to make a morning daylight attack. As “F” Company moved through our area, the Germans opened up with a barrage of mortars and artillery that caused some panic among their newly arrived raw replacements. We overhead one man ask his buddy, “How do you like this combat?” His answer, “I like that stuff that goes ‘whooshing’ out, but I don’t like to hear it come ‘whooshing’ in.” 1st and 3rd Battalions moved out, meeting some resistance, but soon reached their objective, Altenkirchen.

The next objective for our Company “G” was to be Haigler, a city about 25 miles east of our position. Our company h eadquarters had been set up in a rock farm house that looked very formidable – almost fort like. About 60 feet behind this house were a series of rock farm buildings that were on the same level as the basement of the farm house. The Headquarters personnel were having their breakfast when German 88mm artillery began fi ring. The group felt safe inside the building. A volley of a half dozen 88 shells cleared the farmhouse, hitting the buildings to our rear. The shell fragments came back at us through the windows and the door (like a pool shot ricochet). Nearly everyone in the room was hit, including KIA Captain Millinor. He was the second Captain we lost.

We moved out. Our Company “G” spearheaded the assault. We soon covered about fi ve miles, fi nding a few snipers and meeting very little artillery fi re. The 3rd Armored Division was moving well in their sector. We soon got word that trucks would be coming forward to move us on toward Haigler. While on the way, I was on a patrol to check out a stalled US truck sitting on a side road. These two men must have lost their way and got separated from the 3rd Armored. They were headed for the enemy. They came under artillery fi re and were hiding under their truck (which was no place to be). They were almost scared speechless and so glad to see us. Along the way, we took several small towns and villages. The civilians were not evacuated, but remained in their homes. (The German high command was losing control of their military force as well as the civilians.) We reached the outskirts of Haigler making a daylight attack, with “E” Company on the left and “G” Company on the right; “F” Company was in reserve. We met little opposition and soon the town was ours.

Bridge to the WorldA BERKS COUNTY WOMAN MAKES A DIFFERENCEBy Shirley J. Lutz, NESTA Certifi ed Personal Trainer, FITOUR Certifi ed Group Exercise Trainer

My parents always had hobbies. Even in their eighties with my mother experiencing some health issues, they continue to love and play bridge. No longer interested in becoming more than the Life Masters they are, they play for fun and to keep their minds sharp.

My journey has brought me to learn the game of Bridge. Sue Wessner, a lifelong Berks County resident, is a most notable teacher. Born in 1947, looking like a model for Chico’s, Sue is a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm. She has always lived in Hamburg, where her parents each served as mayor. This is where she and her two sons attended school, as now do her two grandchildren. Sue held many jobs in her lifetime; including being a church organist, an LPN and phlebotomist, working for a Berks County Judge, a nurse in a prison, and running her own gift shop…of course in Hamburg.

Sue began playing bridge in 2003. Four years later she became a bridge teacher and director. This woman who said “I was very home oriented, never really ventured far out of town,” recently returned from her world cruise visiting England, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia and Estonia, where she teaches bridge and sees the world. This opportunity fi rst began when she was invited to accompany Berks County Opera Singer and Conduc-tor, Brian Gibson, on the World Caribbean Concert, and direct

bridge for him. Playing contract bridge, well, necessitates a strong memory.

The game requires four players, paired off, with each player communicating their strategy by each card played. Being a good player demands that every card played is remembered.

Some researchers provide evidence that mental engagement — doing crossword puzzles, reading books — may delay demen-tia. Some presume social connections, including interaction with friends, may be very important. Being alone can cause a healthy human mind to go blank and quickly become disori-ented.

Sue reveals that working with the elderly is like a ministry for her. “Playing bridge has given them a life, a reason to get up for the next day, something to look at, material to study.” Her games, especially those held at the Highlands at Wyomissing, allow for residents and non-residents to learn and play together. She even goes the extra mile for those on the cruise ship she taught. If any of the over 500 people on her email list have questions about bridge concepts or conventions she answers each by email.

Maybe you should try something new like playing bridge. You never know where it can take you.

Hello Seniors! On Thursday, August 14, our group traveled to Ehrhardt’s

for Big Band Day. We had a full bus. The music brought back many memories. Some of our people danced and some just talked. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

Tuesday, September 9 was our mystery trip. We traveled to Lancaster. We learned a lot about the Amish. We also went to Kreiders’ Farm.

November 6 we will travel to American Music Theatre for their Christmas show, which is always beautiful.

We have a few members who are battling some sort of illness. We ask everyone to pray for them. With God’s help we know they will be fi ne. We have one trip left this year and have four seats available. Anyone interested should contact Nancy Has-sler at (610) 777-5988. The December 3 trip is to Longwood Gardens and the price is $83. Hello Senior Citizens!Happy Thanksgiving to all! Can you believe the holidays are

almost upon us? Attendance for the September 10 meeting was 65. Shirley

Frazer will start collecting the dues for 2015, which will remain the same at $5. Refreshment committee members were: Lynda Shenk, Jay and Jeanette Burkert, Mary Boeshore, Jane Folk, and Dee Eastland.

Immediately following the business meeting, Sylvia J, Knouse introduced our entertainment for the day: Yolanda Spohn. Yolanda provided music on her guitar as well as sang along with her beautiful voice that came from her heart and soul. There was also some foot-tapping and hand clapping as she played songs from the Beatles and Elvis Presley era as well as some inspirational hymns, and you guessed it, polkas! Very nice, Yolanda!

On Saturday, September 20, 47 seniors departed from the parking lot and headed with coach driver Ron to New Orleans, LA. First stop was an overnight stay in Wytheville, VA. The next night was in Birmingham, AL and then the four nights in New Orleans, LA. We fi nished with one night in Atlanta, GA. The weather could not have been more beautiful and there was so much to see. What a wonderful trip it was for everyone! Thank you to everyone, outside of the Blandon Seniors, that went along on our trip. Without them, it would not have been possible!

The luncheon venue, Glen Rock Mill Inn, was built in 1832 as a saw mill. Over the years, the Mill has transitioned into an upscale restaurant in a unique, historical setting. The charm and cuisine made this a delightful midday stop.

DANA PARISH RETIREES

Is this going to be the month that you — as a Parish retiree/former employee — are going to attend our luncheon meet-ing for the fi rst time? Or has it just been awhile? If so, saddle up, hitch the buckboard, jump on your pogo stick or whatever, and mosey on over to Wegman’s Family Restaurant on Thurs-day, November 6. The restaurant is located at 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading. The private meeting/dining area is located on the lower level. Please use the rear entry. Ample parking is available. When you return to the fold you will be greeted with open arms. Steel-toed shoes are optional.

All persons attending will be indulged with a hot meal served buffet-style at noon. November’s repast will include an entrée of savory roast beef, creamy-smooth mashed potatoes, succulent carrots, delectable apple sauce, and fresh rolls/butter. For dessert, something different will be available — three fl avors of heav-enly ice cream...and you get to chisel it out yourself!

Nomination of offi cers for all board positions will also be ac-cepted at the November meeting. The election will be held in December and installation will be conducted in January. These offi ces are for two-year commitments. If anyone is interested, contact someone on the Retirees Board. Your input is always welcomed and taken into consideration.

Monthly meetings are always held on the fi rst Thursday of each month, September through June. Social gatherings com-mence at 11 a.m. — or earlier, if you so choose — and conclude

at approximately 1:30 p.m. All former employees from the Dana-Parish plant (management and union) are invited and encouraged to attend. Bring your hearing aids. What did you say?

To all tow-motor operators: Whoever attempted to drive through the Lewis Building service entry while the doors were still in the down position, please report to the personnel offi ce for further orientation.

REMINDER: Next year’s annual picnic will be held at Maier’s Grove in beautiful downtown Blandon. If you are unable to fi nd the grove, stop at the Blandon Tourist Information Center for directions. It is really only a hop, skip and jump the way the crow fl ies from the Shriners’ picnic grove. You’re going to love it there!

There were two speakers at our September 8 meeting. Meri-dith Mensinger, a registered dietitian from Redner’s Warehouse Markets gave a slide presentation. She shared information that will help us select foods that will keep us healthy.

The second speaker was from Keystone Villa at Fleetwood. She described information about living in their apartments. They have meals, activities, free washer and driers for those do-ing their own laundry. Shuffl eboard and a pool table are avail-able for fun. Transportation for appointments and short trips is also available. For people living in the community, invitations are issued for free exercise classes, informational sessions and free entertainment.

The chefs for our September meeting served a really good macaroni and hamburger casserole with a salad and bread. Chefs were Carol Lopresto, Carol and Charles Stoudt, Linda Glassmire, Donna and Alan Wenrich, and the Seligs.

The day after the meeting members went on a mystery trip. A really good one, too! Thanks to a great guide with knowledge of Havre de Grace , there was a lot to see. Ice cream for break-fast and a stop at Bon Boy Candy Store for chocolate brownies started the day. The evening meal was at a restaurant with a view of the bay. Marilyn Daniels should be thanked for all the work she puts into planning trips.

Marilyn has the 2015 schedule of trips ready for us. She has fun trips planned to see interesting and entertaining places to visit next year.Leah Eckenroth, Secretary/Publicity

TUCKERTON NIFTY FIFTY CLUBOur next trip will take place on November 11, when we

travel to Spring Grove for a Victorian tea, ride on a steam train and follow the route that President Lincoln took on his way to Gettysburg to deliver his famous speech. Then, we will stop at a nursery for some holiday shopping. There is a waiting list; please call, as there may be a last minute cancellation.

On December 3, we will go to Hunterdon Hills Playhouse to have lunch and see its Christmas show. There are still some seats available. If interested in any of these trips, call Marian Freet at (610) 777-9741.

We would like to welcome new members that joined during the year: Judy Bressler, Mary Wooddell, Dorothy Folk, Bon-nie and Steve Szajek, Joanne Moll, Lewis Ramsey, Bonnie and Robert Keller, Jeannette Dunkelberger, and George and Carol Schaeffer. Mary and Richard Schmeck joined during our Sep-tember meeting.

There will not be a November meeting. Our upcoming program is Holiday Bingo on December 10. Items are to be Christmas-related and wrapped as a gift.

Meetings are held on the second fourth Wednesday of the month. The exception is November and December. Meetings start at 10 a.m. If you enjoy playing bingo, bring your lunch and join us. Guests are always welcome. Susan Messer, Secretary

ITY Mother Nature gave 59 seniors a very comfortable day at the

September meeting. It’s hard to believe that we are approach-ing the fall months. I just realized that the Senior Berners celebrated their 12th anniversary. Time does fl y when you’re having fun!

President Smith opened the meeting and Pastor Roper gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Smith added a bit of humor as he read several “se-nior jokes.” We do love to laugh at ourselves.

We extended birthday greetings to members with September birthdays and honored two couples with September wedding anniversaries. Congratulations, all!

Doris Schlappich, program chairlady, has lined up several interesting programs for the rest of the year. In October, we will anxiously welcome back Sam Faranda’s group “Just Us.” No-vember will be an organ presentation by Charles Beaver, and we will have our annual Christmas party in December.

Travel chairman, Grant Hatt has openings available for the December 10 Christmas show at American Music Theater and meal at Hershey Farms Restaurant. The cost is $84. Call Grant at (610) 562-3417 for reservations.

Dr. Katherine Hu, comprehensive ophthalmologist with Eye Consultants of PA, was the speaker at the September meeting. Her topic was aging eyes. As part of her program, she used a slide presentation to inform us of the many problems associated with aging eyes, some of them being dry eyes; cataracts; fl ashes

SENIOR BERNERSand fl oaters; glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. She described treatments associated with the various problems.

A wonderful aroma wafted through the social hall: yummy meatball sandwiches were the entrée with sides, salads and des-serts galore. Thanks to the many volunteers and cleaner-uppers that prepared and served the goodies.

We also say thank you to the parish nurses for doing blood pressure checks prior to the meeting. Faye Beissel

The Golden Muhls meet on the fourth Monday of each month at the Recreation Building at 3025 River Road in Muhlenberg Township from 10 a.m. to noon. All seniors over the age of 55 are welcome. You do not need to live in Muhlen-berg Township to participate. Yearly dues are just $5 per person and $2 for each meeting you attend.

To fi nish out the year with the Golden Muhls, we have two great programs. The fi rst is Richard Biehl on November 24. He will be with us to talk about his experiences in World War II on the beaches of Normandy. The Invasion of Normandy was the largest amphibious invasion to ever to take place. On Decem-ber 9, the Golden Muhls will have its Holiday Luncheon at Crossroads from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Come join us at one of our meetings. We are a friendly group that likes to have some fun!
