DONATE TO RELOCATE….THE RELOCATION QUEST

CONTINUES…

It seems that almost every day when I am out and about in our commu-

nity, someone stops to ask me “how are things going with The Senior

Center relocation project”. My answer continues to be that we are still look-

ing for a place that fits our needs, a lot that we can build on and we are still

accepting donations and planning fundraising activities. Although I keep

telling myself that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and that “all things come

together for those that wait”….I find it hard to be patient many days. I truly

believe that “our place” will become a reality as I look around and see all of

the other not for profit entities that have accomplished their goals. Our time

will come!!!

Speaking of fundraisers – please mark Friday evening, October 19th on

your calendar for the Senior Center’s Annual Event. This year’s theme will

be “An Evening with the Steuben STARS”. Once again we will return to the

beautiful Lake James Room at Potawatomi Inn for a showcase of local

musical talent that will provide an entertaining evening and raise funds

solely dedicated to our relocation efforts. You will not want to miss it!!

Most likely by now those of you who visit the Senior Center or attend the

Senior Center activities on a regular basis know that our Activities Director

Pam McLaughlin has resigned to pursue other interests. After having only

been with us less than a year, Pam has endeared herself to many of you

and had made many improvements to our senior offerings and comradery.

While we will all miss Pam’s smiling face, our senior activities will continue

as a new Activities Director is sought. If you know of someone who loves

mixing and mingling with the delightful seniors in our community, send them

over to the Council on Aging offices for more information.

As a reminder, although our board does not meet in the month of June,

you are always welcome to attend our board meetings, which are held on

the last Thursday of the month (except June and December). We welcome

SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

Use Sunscreen: Experts recommend that seniors use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or

higher, and one that’s easy to apply, such as a roll-on or spray. Also choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Since seniors have sen-sitive skin, they should avoid sunscreens with alcohol, fragrances or preservatives that can cause irritation.

Drink Plenty of Water: This is always sound advice, but even more so when the weather

gets hot. Dehydration is the prime cause of many heat-related health issues, so encourage seniors to drink plenty of water while spending time outside in the summer, even if they aren’t thirsty. Also, try to limit alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they can contribute to dehydration.

Wear Appropriate Clothing: No one likes to sit inside on a nice day, but it’s important to

make sure seniors have the right clothing before heading out for a fun summer outing. Light-colored, lightweight clothes and a wide-brimmed hat will help keep seniors cool and pro-tected from the sun.

Take Frequent Breaks: If you are out with a senior on a hot day, make sure to take fre-

quent breaks. Take things slow and find a cool, shady spot to sit and rest and have a glass of water now and then. Avoid any activity that is too strenuous when it's very hot.

Stay in Air-Conditioned Environments as Much as Possible: During extreme heat, sen-iors should have access to air conditioning, and fans should not be relied upon as a primary cooling device. Always have their air conditioning unit checked before hot weather arrives to make sure it works properly. If they do not have air conditioning, make sure he or she has a place to go in the event of extreme heat, like a local mall, library, or other public place. Local cooling centers are often set up in major cities during heat waves.

Know the Warning Signs of Heat Illnesses: During hot weather, if a loved one experienc-

Ideas for Outdoor Activities

Focus on hobbies and interests that you used to enjoy and get creative with new options you might find fun and rewarding.

1. Catch a sporting event. Attending a grandchild's soccer game or a professional baseball game can be

an action-packed way to get out and enjoy the summer.

2. Fish for fun. You can cast a rod from a dock, pier, or other location, even if someone has mobility prob-lems or uses a wheelchair. Check your state’s tourism or state park websites to see if they provide list-ings of accessible fishing locations. Many areas across the country have also started offering all-terrain wheelchairs for check out or rental that can help a loved one with mobility issues get closer to the water.

3. Be a tourist. If you live in a city, take an open-air bus or trolley tour to see the local sights. Another op-tion could be a boat tour, it gets you outside, but you don't necessarily have to be walking. A Sunday drive around town can also let you check out happenings in the community. This could be new construc-tion, blooming flowers and trees, or even festivals and community events.

4. Stroll around. If a walk is possible, start slow and work up to longer outings. Either keep the first few walks short, or bring along a walker or wheelchair in case your loved one gets tired and needs to rest along the way or requires help getting back.

5. Be an animal lover. This could be as simple as sitting outside and enjoying the sights and sounds of a birdhouse, bird feeder or bird bath in the yard, or could mean an outing to the zoo or local dog park. There are plenty of options for those who enjoy animals to get outside and either interact with or observe nature.

6. Go fly a kite. Head to a park or beach and get a kite soaring.

7. Picnic outdoors. Picnics can be in your own backyard or at the park, watch children run around and en-

joy the buzz of outdoor activity. Make sure to locate an area with comfortable seating and plenty of shade in advance, or remember to bring your own.

8. Attend community events. From Memorial Day concerts to Fourth of July parades and fireworks, there are plenty of community events during spring and summer that offer opportunities to get out and be part of the crowd. Many communities offer outdoor musical performances, art shows, car shows, flea markets and more. Peruse the events section of the local newspaper to find happenings that fit your in-terests and abilities.

9. Go out for a treat. Most people have a favorite snack or restaurant that picks their spirits right up.

Instead of limiting this indulgence to special occasions or the post-doctor’s appointment routine, make an outing out of it just because. This could consist of getting an ice cream cone from the local Dairy Queen, a coffee and pastry from a favorite breakfast spot, or a lunch special from the diner around the corner. If the weather is nice, enjoy your goodies at a patio table.

10. Go Shopping. Branch out and visit consignment shops, flea markets, and thrift stores where hidden treasures are just waiting to be found! These shopping adventures are low cost and you can
