ACES Cat Shelf—CRS-1—21”x12”x12” Effectively increase the size of any cat cage by inserting this clever cat resting shelf. Large lounging perch, an area for the litter pan and a “cuddle area.” Made from ABS plastic so animals stay warm. Easy cleaning and disinfecting. Helps quiet stainless cages. The cost of shipping the cat shelves is very high. This could be a great fundraiser or group donation. Funds can be raised to purchase as many shelves as possible, including shipping, or a group could go in to purchase several shelves with one person in the group donating the shipping. http://www.animal-care.com/cage_accessories.aspx Purchase the shelves through the website and have them shipped to Anchorage Animal Care and Control, 4711 Elmore Road, Anchorage, AK 99507.

Materials list: Cardboard (a great way to reuse cardboard boxes!) Scissors or Exact-o knife Twine of any sort Directions: Cut the cardboard into 1.5 inch strips. Punch holes (using scissors or knife) about 2 inches from the top and bottom of each cardboard strip. Stack the cardboard strips so that the holes you punched line up. Stack enough strips to make the scratcher at least 5 inches wide. As you stack the cardboard strips, thread the twine through the holes on the top and bottom of each strip. Once you have

Example of a great home made dog toy:

stacked enough cardboard strips, tie the twine as tightly as possible so that the cardboard strips are held together firmly. Leave enough extra twine on each end to tie the scratcher to the kennel, and leave some twine dangling to attract the cat to the scratcher. Here is an example of the final product!

Materials list: Sock Paper, cotton balls, or another sock for stuffing Catnip Directions: Place catnip into the middle of a small piece of paper or another sock. Crumple up the paper or fabric, keeping catnip in the center, then place into toe of the main sock (don't overfill to the point that the sock is no longer soft). Fill main sock with cotton balls, pa-per, or fabric around the catnip bundle. Sew or tie off top of main sock. If you plan to decorate the sock us-ing markers, make sure the ink is non-toxic.

More DIY Cat Toys 1. “Mouse” Toy Materials List: thread-less spool, shoelace (leather is best) cut to size Directions: Tie shoelace to spool, cut to size. Let cat roll around and play with! 2. Polar Ribbon Materials List: old polar fleece jacket or top, one chopstick, one thick rubber band (like the ones used for broccoli), scissors Directions: Cut a 1-inch-wide lengthwise strip from the polar fleece top. Continue cutting strips until they add up to 50-70 inches in length. Tie the strips together with double knots to form a very long ribbon. Tie a knot at one end of the ribbon, and tie the other end of the ribbon around the elastic band. Wrap the band around the wide end of the chopstick un-til it is secure. 3. Cat Rattle Materials list: Cardboard toilet paper roll, beads or small bells, scissors Directions: Take the roll left over from the toilet paper, put a couple of beads (or bells if you have them) inside and tape both ends se-curely. As it rolls across the floor it will make a noise that no cat can resist. ALWAYS supervise your cat when it is play-ing with toys, homemade or otherwise, that have string, strips of fabric, or ribbon. Some cats will eat string, which can strangulate or obstruct their bowels. This can be fatal and the cure is a VERY expensive surgery. Store the toys in an attractive, covered basket, or other container, until ready for use. Avoid items that your cat may want to eat or that have the potential to cause injury. When in doubt, just leave it out.

These easy to make biscuits are a wonderful treat for that special pooch in your life. Don’ t be surprised if you catch her begging for more!

Directions

1. Make sure there’s an adult to supervise and read the entire recipe before you begin baking.

2. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. 3. Dissolve yeast in ¼ cup warm water. Add to vegetable or chicken stock. Next,

combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl; add stock mixture. 4. Knead mixture on a floured surface for about 3 minutes, working into a stiff

dough. Roll out to a thickness of ¼ inch. You can cut them into bars or use a dog-bone cookie cutter.

5. Beat 1 egg with 1-tablespoon milk. Brush each biscuit with a little of the egg/milk mixture and place on cookie sheets. Bake for about 45 minutes.

6. Turn off the heat, but leave biscuits in the oven overnight. This makes them hard and crunchy.

7. Give biscuit to dog and watch your dog munch away! Makes 4 to 5 dozen dog biscuits For more recipes, visit http://soar.berkeley.edu.recipes/dog/
