Designed primarily as a central storage location for personal and media files, the My Book World Edition comes with the choice of either a 1TB to 4TB drive. If you should need more space, a USB 2.0 utility port on the rear of the drive allows for the addition of an extra external drive to create an instant storage network.

Compatible with both Mac and Windows files, the My Book can connect to multiple PC’s on your home or office network via an Ethernet connection that plugs straight into your router. Inbuilt software automatically backs up files as you use them, ensuring that nothing is ever lost in the event that you forget to do a manual backup. This applies to all the computers on your network.

A built-in media server makes streaming music, photos and movies to any DLNA multimedia device possible. This month we take a look inside the Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB to see what’s inside a state-of-the-art, high-capacity hard drive.

1 WD Caviar Green Hard Drive cover plate which acts as a dust cover and seals the drive. If removed, the drive is destroyed.2 1 TB, 32MB Cache, SATA

3Gbit/s WD Caviar Green Hard Drive which utilises a reduced power consumption feature.3 Insulating foam for the

hard drives power board and connectors.4 Rubberised drive mounts

that also act as minor shock absorbers. There are 4 in total between case and board.

5 Hard Drive power board and connections.6 Drive mount with rubber

feet for connection to outer case.7 Mainboard with Ethernet

b ƒCTUƒTOR COIL MOTOR Varying the current in these copper coils causes their electromagnetic field to interact with the magnetic fields of the rare-earth magnets surrounding them. This allows the actuator arm to move rapidly across the platters.
