Vials Introduction

Note: 1. Chemical resistance data are general guides only. Many factors such as temperature, chemical combinations, concentration, pressure, exposure time, etc. can influence or alter the resistance characteristics of a product. Always test your selection using your test conditions. As a general rule, as temperature increases, resistance to attack decreases. 2. Combination liner (Ex. PTFE/Silicone) has the resistance of the facing material (PTFE) prior to puncture. After puncture, a small portion of the other material is exposed and its sealing and resistance characteristics must then be considered. 3. Colored closures and liners are free of heavy metals to comply with CONEG standards.

How to Measure for Vial, Cap, and Liner Selection

Bottles and caps are described with a two part number system referred to as the Finish*. (Example: 13/425). The first number represents the neck size of the vial or cap in millimeters.

The vial is measured from the outside edge of the threads on one side to the outer edge of the threads on the opposite side (Figure 1). The cap is measured from one side of the inner wall to the opposite side of the inner wall (Figure 2).

Liner size can be determined by comparing liners or crimp seals to the measured circles (Figure 4).

Liner with SlitLiner with Starburst

With combination liners (Ex: PTFE/silicone, 5/55), the numbers represent the thickness of the individual components of the liner in mils. This same liner could be described as 0.060" or 60 mil.

Durometer or hardness of liner material is referred to as “shore” and is an important consideration in working with some autosamplers (45-60 shore is the typical range for autosampler liners). Liners with slits or molded starburst patterns (Figure 5) allow easier needle penetration which can prevent needles bending or jamming on the autosampler arm.

The second number describes the thread pattern and assures the bottle and cap will fit together (Figure 3).

For reproducible results, it’s very important that the headspace vials and caps form a tight seal. In headspace analysis, the sample is sealed into the vial and heated until the concentration in the gas phase (headspace) is in equilibrium with the concentration in the liquid phase. An aliquot from the headspace is then analyzed.

What’s Special About this Plate?

It’s a vial-holding device that can accommodate individual vials of different heights and volumes. It can be used with volatile solvents and maintains its position at the bottom of a water bath to permit uniform transfer of heat or cold to and from the vials. The cover and liner provide a seal for individual samples that prevents sample evaporation. Glass vials provide an inert environment for samples. Maximum height tolerance of your autosampler determines the maximum volume of samples for analyses.

The block heater has separate high and low thermostats and has an on-off switch and pilot light. The low setting is for ambient to 60°C, while the high setting covers the 50 to 130°C range. The heater measures 8" L x 5" W x 3" H (20.3cm L x 12.7cm W x 7.6cm H).

All of the blocks listed are 3-3/4" L x 2-15/16" W x 2" H (9.5cm L x 7.5cm W x 5.1cm H) and are interchangeable. Wells are 1.75" (44cm) deep with rounded bottoms.

Diazomethane is used to methylate acidic compounds for analysis by gas chromatography. It offers the advantages of clean and quantitative reactions but it is highly toxic and explosive. Instructions for use are included with each unit.

The Adjustable Crimper has an adjustable pressure block in the crimper head that allows crimping of liners with a thickness range of 0.25 to 3.0mm. The unit looks like the standard hand crimper but it is supplied with an allen wrench and special instructions for making adjustments.

Adjustable Crimper Instructions

The crimper has an adjustment feature which will allow it to be used with a variety of septa, discs, stoppers or lined caps. The user may adjust the stroke or movement for each application as needed.

What’s special about the adjustable hand crimpers?

The new design has an adjustable pressure block that corrects for differences in liner thickness and provides a tighter seal. Crimping is accomplished by placing the crimper head over the aluminum seal and squeezing the handle.

Adjustment Method:

1. Hold crimper with jaws up, notice hex socket screw.

2. Insert hex wrench into screw socket.

3. For looser septa, turn screw clockwise 1/8" turn. For tighter septa, turn screw counter clockwise 1/8" turn.

The Alltech Vial Crusher will process a mound of used glassware in a matter of minutes. The unit can crush a range of sizes from 5 x 30mm limited volume inserts up to a maximum size of 61 x 138mm (8oz) Boston round bottles. Just fi ll the hopper, set the aperature to optimize crushing, close the lid and start crushing. Within a few minutes you can rinse the crushed glass and send it for recycling. The waste liquid is transferred directly into your waste container for easy disposal.

Types of Vial Crushers Automated Vial Crusher, 110V or 220V

The Automated Vial Crusher is a heavy duty unit powered by a 110 volt, 0.5HP, single-phase motor with several built-in safety features. The stainless steel cabinet has a safety shut-off switch that prevents the unit from operating if the lid is not securely seated on the hopper. A reset switch prevents the motor from restarting automatically if a vial jam occurs in the crushing mechanism.

A 220 volt, 0.5HP version of the Automated Vial Crusher is also available. It has the same cabinet, crushing mechanism, and safety features as the 110 volt automated version. The 220 volt unit is not CE Marked.

Manual Vial Crusher

The Manual Vial Crusher uses the same heavy duty cabinet and crushing mechanism as the automated unit, but is powered by a hand crank. The gear ratio has been

selected to permit effi cient crushing with minimal effort. There are no safety switches to prevent turning the crank when the lid is open. The only set up required is attachment of the crank handle.

The Mini-Shop Vacuum

For quick, clean-up of dry glass use our Mini-Shop Vacuum. This unit is small. lightweight, and easy to handle. It has a 1 gallon tank and a 1HP motor. It’s also great for other small clean up chores in the lab.
