Your Action Plan

1. Your first step should be listening to some greatrecordings and different interpretations of thisamazing jazz standard. I should add that I want youto be able to sing along with the tune of the songbefore even attempting to play it. Trust me. This is afantastic way of really learning songs!

Here are three different versions you should listen to. All can be found on YouTube.

• Jaco Pastorius• Charlie Parker• Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry and Niels-

Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

2. Now it's time to learn the tune of the song. Split it upinto small learnable sections as I discuss within thevideo tutorial. Make sure you can play each part ofthe tune cleanly before moving onto the next. Speedis not what you're looking for here. To play it up tospeed is going to take a serious investment of yourtime. To start with, just aim to play it cleanly with thecorrect fingering and muting. Once you can do that,then start cranking up the speed.

3. When you have learned the tune and can play it frommemory that is the time to start using themetronome exercises. Again, take it slowly. Theseexercises are hard, but in the long run they're worththe effort you'll have to put into them. Work througheach metronome exercise one at a time.

4. Try using this same system on another jazz standard.There's plenty to choose from but here's a few I haveused.
