MOST PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED, FRIGHTENED OR ANGRY WHEN THEY ENTER A PROGRAM TO DEAL WITH THEIR ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS.

IF YOU HAVE FEELINGS THAT ARE UNCOMFORTABLE, RECOGNIZE THIS IS A NORMAL REACTION. MANY PEOPLE ENTERING A TREATMENT PROGRAM HAVE FELT SOME PAIN, ANXIETY AND FEAR AS A RESULT OF THEIR ACTIONS.

10 c2000evagregorycounselingonline

You may have even attempted to deal with your problems on your own without success. Be assured, very few people enter a program with the attitude of “GREAT! This is exactly where I want to be and how I want to spend my time.” Yet many people, someplace in the back of their minds, feel a sense of relief and believe that their lives need to change.

Whatever your own attitude is at this moment, be assured that change is possible for you. With your hard work you can make it happen.

11 c2000evagregorycounselingonline

This program is your program. What you put into it is what you will get out of it.

Just as you might be wondering about what got you here and about your uncomfortable feelings, you probably feel a bit anxious about what to expect in this program. Most people entering treatment have the same concern.

The purpose of treatment is to provide the information, strategies and support you need to make lasting and positive life changes. Your willingness to be open and honest will determine how much you will gain out of the program.

12 c2000evagregorycounselingonline

An important part of treatment is learning to feel comfortable with yourself and your situation.

Homework:

Describe in four to six sentences what you expect in treatment:

What do you hope to get out of this program? Please answer in four to six sentences.

13 c2000evagregorycounselingonline

I’m doing it for someone else. I can fool others along the way.

Just ‘til I get off Probation. I’ll be compliant, but not honest.

No one knows more about how You operate than you do.

14 c2000evagregorycounselingonline

How do you think you might be tempted to sabotage your own self-change? Self-talk statements can be a down fall in recovery. Be aware of the statements that you make to yourself.

Ways to sabotage your recovery:

Getting involved in a new intimate relationship.

Switching one destructive behavior for another.

Keeping your recovery a secret from people you care about and who wants to help you.

Getting overconfident with your recovery program.

HOMEWORK:

Please answer in four to six sentences.

What are three ways you might sabotage your recovery?

1. 2. 3.

When you look into a mirror, who do you see?

Look at what you see coming from the inside.

PHRASES THAT DESCRIBE YOU.

COMMENT

I MAKE FRIENDS EASILY.

I AM SELF-CENTERED.

I AM ASHAMED OF MANY THINGS I’VE DONE.

I LIE A LOT.

I AM MANIPULATIVE.

I OFTEN FEEL MISUNDERSTOOD.

I HAVE A STRONG SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG.

You will be going to monthly meetings with your Probation Officer. How will the Officer see you? It is not about who you are, what you have done, but the Probation Officer’s observational view of you after reading your chart and then seeing your initial appearance. This is the time that the Probation Officer will label you in their mind. That is who you will be throughout your probation period. Don’t be surprised if you “look like a criminal “ to the Probation Officer” and if you are treated like an ax murderer or a serial bank robber.

Look in the mirror.

Say “I’m a criminal’. Desensitize yourself.

Whatever your probation fees are monthly, make sure that you are up-to-date. Pick-up cans, mow lawns, wash cars, or pawn a valuable item, but have that fee up-to-date.

Your officer will hear any excuse as being non-compliant and “it must be a lie”.

Another hot topic is keeping up your community service hours. You are expected to do 8 or 10 hours per month. Do them unless you have time to take out for jail.

The type of lifestyle you live is a choice. It includes rewards and costs. In time you may recognize that you are giving up almost as much as you are gaining as a result of your choice. It is reality time. It is necessary to come out of your stinking thinking and view the world as you made it with your chaos.

YOU ARE UNIQUE! Everyone experiences some challenges in this program. You have personal assets and qualities that you are proud of and know you can rely on even when the going gets tough. Discover you innate abilities that will help you succeed.

Blocks in Your way can distract you from focusing on the program. Preferences about treatment are personal choices you would make if you could.

List two needs to address: 1. 2. List your preferences for the treatment

1. Learn the facts about your problem behavior.

2. GET INVOLVED. Look for people and places in your community that support and promote positive life change. Start attending AA or NA meetings.

3. Ask for Help. Recognize and seek the support of others who have experienced long term success in a life change. Look for people who are willing to be honest and direct with you about your problem behavior.
