EVENTS AT DORCHESTER’S ANCIENT HENGE,MAUMBURY RINGS - COME AND JOIN THE FIESTA!

Hello and welcome to the 6th Dorchester Festival - a celebration ofHispanic culture alongside national and local artists. 26 performancesare free and happening in Maumbury Rings, our main festival venuefor 2006.

We have a big white tent in the Rings, where large scale events takeplace. We have the huge southwest based Show of Hands, from theCameroon, members of the Baka tribe, with Baka Beyond and fromHonduras a fantastic salsa band Duende. We have formed our ownFestival Samba Band with Magic Drum, which will be leading theprocession.

This Festival links up with the Fair Trade Foundation, with a talk by itspatron George Alagiah, and sponsorship from Respect Organics, whohave also organised the Soil Association exhibition at a new venuePoundbury Gardens.

The Dorchester Festival is supported by grants from Arts CouncilSouthwest Heritage Lottery Fund, Dorchester Town Council, DorsetCounty Council for the Youth Arts activities and West Dorset DistrictCouncil. This funding enables us to provide free events makingDorchester come alive with the festival buzz.

Watch out for the unusual, be stunned by the passion of flamenco,taste the bananas, come to our Strictly Latino tea dance - there’ssomething for everyone.

The Festival Finale performance by world music group Baka Beyondjoined by five Baka people from the rain forest of Cameroon. Eightmusicians have worked with Baka Beyond from Senegal, Sierra Leone,Ghana, Britain and Brittany, to create this afro-celt sound. Drawn fromthe sounds of the Cameroon, the music combines the rhythm andenergy of these different cultures. The Baka are a hunter-gatherercommunity, facing changes through deforestation. Baka Beyond collectroyalties from their music and reinvests them in the rain forest people.For the rain forest pygmies’ music is part of everyday life and everydaylife is a communal effort with the forest.
