Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite

a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.

More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Ash United. We hope you have an enjoyable stay and look forward to a competitive game played in the right spirit.

It’s certainly been a rollercoaster start to the season.

For the first time since 2013, the Chicks are back playing home games in the town. Our opening game here was a five-goal thriller, with the Chicks edging a 3-2 win. The second game last Saturday also had five goals – unfortunately they were all in our net!

The interesting thing about non-league football at this level is that everyone has their own idea of how to do it. There’s no one right way – you just have to find what’s right for your club. AC London, our visitors last week, have a very focused plan – it’s based on doing whatever is necessary to drive through the leagues as quickly as possible. We have a very different plan for Dorking FC – it’s about restoring the club as a central part of the local community and offering opportunities to local talented players to reach their potential while playing for their hometown club.

We’re putting the foundations in place to achieve

DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN

a welcome from the chairman

ALAN GOUT

04

that, and already more than half our team is from Dorking or the immediately surrounding villages. On top of that, we have a new manager in Danny Fox with a real track record of developing young players.

The enthusiasm there’s been in the town for our return from exile this year has been fantastic and tells us we’re on the right path for Dorking – both the club and the town. One disappointing result against a team likely to breeze through the division won’t deflect us from that plan. We’ll stay focused and achieve our objectives. We’re already ahead of schedule.

I’d like to thank you for your support – it means a lot and is really important as we all work to revitalize this great old club for the benefit of the whole town.

I would also like to thank our Dorking FC Matchmakers – the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble, giving spectators a warm welcome. The Matchmakers are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email [email protected].

My final thanks this week must go to Marc White,

Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and picturesque ground that they’ve built here available to us this season. Both clubs are working together to promote grassroots football in the local area with the utmost enthusiasm.

And the future is exceptionally bright.

Rebuilding work at our traditional ground at Meadowbank begins in September and we will return home next season, in a fantastic new stadium with a state-of-the-art artificial grass pitch. As well as once again being the home of the Chicks, the new Meadowbank will also be the home venue for Wanderers, a training facility for local youth clubs, and the headquarters of Surrey FA - putting Dorking FC at the heart of a new hub for football in the county and giving a real boost to the town centre.

So there’s plenty to look forward to. But, for the here and now, we hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.

Kind Regards

Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Tonight is our first social evening of the season – the Dorking FC Quiz Night. It’s open to everyone – just turn up and pay on the door. Full details are later in this match programme, You can come along as an individual, or put together your own team of any size.

The coaches and our players will be there and I’ve caught one or two swotting up throughout the week. It would have helped if the books they were reading were the right way up, but I’m looking forward to putting them – and hopefully you all - through the paces in a rather different manner to usual.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble. I’d particularly like to welcome the players,

management and officials of Ash United.

Much like ourselves, Ash are a club that fell on harder times in recent years but, since being taken over by a new management team, they appear to have worked hard and have ridden through their problems. They ended last season well and have already recorded a couple of good results against strong opponents this year, so I’m looking forward to a good contest this afternoon.

Today’s game is a chance for us to make amends for last week’s defeat to AC London. I have absolutely no doubt that AC London will be in a promotion slot at the end of the season, and the game served as a good learning curve for our new and youthful squad.

Despite the score line, I still thought we played some good football at times and the resilience we showed, even when the game was beyond us, was fantastic. It was a definite improvement on the attitude we saw in similar situations in pre-season.

I can assure you that the players have worked hard in training this week to put certain elements of our game right, and I’m sure we’ll play today with the same creativity that we saw in our first two

TOM DAY

It’s fair to say a few eyebrows were raised when the Chicks lined up in pre-season with a 16 year

old goalkeeper - a position more usually the preserve of age and experience.

But week-by-week, often against higher league opposition, Tom Day showed exactly why manager Danny Fox considered he was ready to make the step up to senior football - impressing with his shot stopping, his distribution and his coolness under pressure, which is more than a match for many considerably older keepers in the league.

“I’ve known Danny for some time,” says Tom, who speaks with the same confidence and maturity he shows on the pitch and belies his lack of years. “He scouted me for academy trials at Brighton and Palace and I trust him completely. So when he suggested I continue my development by coming to play senior football at Dorking, I didn’t need any persuading.”

Tom is combining his first team duties at Dorking

with continuing to play for the youth team at Vanarama National League club Sutton United.

“It’s an excellent standard in the Under 18s at Sutton,” he says, “but it’s good, real world experience to be playing first team football, where things can sometimes be less pretty and you have to show you can just grit your teeth and get on with the job.”

Tom came within minutes of keeping a clean sheet in his first competitive game for the Chicks at Farleigh and has shown that he’s not just good with his hands, but also comfortable with the ball at his feet - he likes to think of himself as a ‘sweeper keeper’.

His assured performances so far have been impressive, and he’s clear about his ambitions for the season, “Clean sheets, improve my talking and controlling of the game - and win as much as possible!”

Manager Danny Fox won’t be too disheartened by this defeat, despite seeing

his youthful side outclassed by a team tipped to notch up many big wins this season.

Indeed, league newcomers AC London arrived at Westhumble on the back of an 8-0 midweek victory, having assembled a team of strong players not just from throughout London, but internationally, with the intention of marching through the non-league divisions to semi-professional status as swiftly as possible.

But for the first fifteen minutes, the Chicks matched their visitors, playing entertaining passing football from back to front, in the style the new boss Danny Fox was brought in to achieve.

It was Dorking who had the ball in the net first when the keeper failed to get enough clearance punching away a Darrell Mothee free kick. Kieran Lunn nodded the ball into an empty net, only for the referee’s assistant to flag for offside.

Just minutes later, AC London took the lead as they broke away following another Dorking free kick with Sado Djalo coolly sliding the ball past keeper Tom Day in a one-on-one.

The goal gave the visitors confidence and they used their pace and power to dominate the Chicks in midfield. After weathering a storm, Dorking began to recover composure and came close to equalising through excellent strikes by Lunn and Mothee.

But just as the Chicks were getting back into the game, AC London scored a second. A fierce free kick

from the edge of the box was parried upwards by Day, but it was AC London’s Ray Oliviera who was first to the loose ball to bundle it into the net.

Any hopes of a Dorking recovery following the half time team talk were quickly scotched as a defensive mix-up gifted the visitors a third just two minutes in to the second half.

A free kick and a deft chip completed the scoring but, despite the scoreline, the Chicks kept playing football with fifteen minutes to go and will also take encouragement from the performance of 17 year old Brandon Watts who was excellent at centre back, against surely one of the strongest attacks in the league.

Dorking FC: Day, Wisbey, Mothee, Boukhari, Watts, Finn, R Lunn, Russell, Davies (Gough 55), K Lunn (Longhurst 82), Hunte (Vasishta 70).

Report by Roger Mahony

“Brandon Watts, 17, showed excellent form faced with one of the league’s strongest strike forces.”

DORKING FC

LADIESINVESTING IN THE WOMEN’S GAME

The Ladies team will kick off their second season as a fully integrated part of

Dorking FC with a brand new sponsor.

Moorad Choudhry Financial Limited is investing in our club to support the development of Ladies football in Mole Valley.

The highly respected, Surrey-based investment banker and academic Professor Moorad Choudhry is well known for his local sporting passion, supporting AFC Wimbledon and Surrey County Cricket Club, and we’re delighted to have him as a sponsor of Dorking FC as we reconnect the club to the local community.

Moorad is also a big fan of Dorking FC Ladies coach Matt Dilger, having played alongside him at his previous club Priory Old Boys FC.

Dorking FC’s Chief Executive, Jason Rabbetts says, “We’re very grateful to Moorad for his generous sponsorship of our Ladies section. His support will go a long way to funding the facilities needed and keep subscription costs low, so we can make the game accessible at a high standard, to the widest possible range of female participants.”

It’s been quite a journey for the Ladies since joining up with Dorking FC to wear the cockerel

colours at the start of last season.

From struggling to field a full team and being on the wrong side of some rather large scorelines the year before, new recruits and regular training meant the squad started steadily to improve, not just in terms of results, but also in attitude and morale.

By the end of the year, Dorking FC Ladies were recording some excellent wins and finished the season at fifth place in the league.

So they go into the 2016-17 season with high expectations.

With a squad of over 20 players, the team is getting stronger throughout pre-season. In keeping with Dorking FC’s vision for the men’s first team, the Ladies combines talented local teenagers with some more experienced players coming in from nearby clubs such as Crawley Wasps, Carshalton and the Chelsea academy.

The successful development of Dorking FC Ladies is in no small part to the tireless work and enthusiasm of up and coming local coach, Matt Dilger.

Matt set the course to lift the Ladies out of their previous troubled times, building loyalty by

21

encouraging and improving the players both as individuals and as a team. And now the squad is taking a lead in the promotion of Ladies football in Surrey and attracting high calibre local players.

“The new players coming in will help us push on to the next level,” says Matt. “It means the girls have to work harder and earn their positions, creating a strong, competitive squad with high levels of talent and ability.”

Matt Dilger’s abilities have been recognised by Dorking’s new manager Danny Fox, who wasted no time offering him a coaching role as part of his first team staff.

To support Matt as he divides his time between his two roles, the Ladies have recruited Ben Smythe as a coach. Ben is highly experienced, having played with clubs including both Watford and Southend, before injury meant he turned his attention to coaching,

Matt says, “I’m delighted to have a coach with the experience of Ben joining us as part of the Ladies, His expertise is bound to ensure the players have every opportunity to develop even further this year.”

You can keep up to date with the progress of the Ladies in the matchday programme throughout the season.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC

Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.

An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.

On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.

Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a

stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.

In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.

On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.

We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority

on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council

for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.

Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY

ASH UNITED FC

Ash United Football Club was founded in 1911 and recently celebrated 100 years

of football. Ash started playing their first competitive matches at Ash Common. Ash United soon became well established in the Surrey Intermediate League, winning every honour possible.

After the Second World War Ash United restructured and in the 1947/48 seasons they had the most successful season in their short history, winning the League Championship and four-cup competitions. Ash United had to wait almost twenty years for their next successful campaign. During the 1966/67 seasons Ash United dominated the Surrey Intermediate Premier “A” League, winning the title with only two points being dropped out of a possible fifty-two. As the points suggest, Ash United’s achievements included a long unbeaten record with 121 goals for and only 19 against.

Not to be outdone, the reserve team also had a terrific season. They won the Division “A” title and scored an amazing 137 goals in only 26 games, an average of 5 per game and some incredible scores. With the first team and the reserves doing well this gave the club a good squad of players, all competing for first team places.

In 1968 Ash United won promotion to the Surrey Senior League, and in their first season they finished runners up, and also finished as runners-up in the cup. This successful start in the Surrey Senior League

came to an abrupt end in 1971 when Ash United were forced to change grounds, this meant they lost their senior status. However, the club managed to find a new permanent home with the co-operation of the local council at Shawfield Road, which remains their home to date. Having a permanent home meant that Ash United regained senior status and were re-admitted to the Surrey Senior League. During the late ‘70s Ash United had several successful seasons, in the 1977/78 season Ash United won the Charity Cup defeating Dorking 2-1 in the final, the following season Ash United finish runners-up in the newly named Combined Counties League as well as reaching the finals of the Philips Football Floodlighting Competition. It took Ash United several years before they managed to win the Combined Counties League, which they eventually won in the 1981/82 season; Ash United also finished runners-up in the Concours Trophy and the George Allen Trophy during that year.

The 1984/85 season saw Ash United getting through to the quarterfinals of the Surrey Senior Cup as well as being runners-up in the Concours Trophy again. During the 1985/86 season Ash United had a creditable run in the FA Vase, followed by a great league performance in 1986/87. Ash United won the League for the second time under the management of Chris Penny.

Ash United produced their best run in the FA Vase in 1993/94 by reaching the second

round only failing to go further by losing to Littlehampton in a replay. The 1996/1997 season saw improvements in the facilities at Shawfield Road, most notably was the installation of floodlights and further improvements to the changing rooms, dugouts, and fencing.

The 1997/98 season was Ash United’s best for several years, with the new manager Jamie Horton bringing his considerable experience to good effect. He brought together a squad of players that won the Challenge Cup and the Fair Play Trophy in his first season as player/manager. The team also created a new league and club record with 29 games unbeaten in league and cup, which included a run of 21 straight wins. The following season Jamie formed a side that took the League title by a massive 13 points. His team also won the Aldershot Senior Cup beating Fleet Town and reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to the Holders & winners Tiverton Town in front of a record crowd at Shawfield Road. Jamie Horton had a second stint as manager during the 2001/2002. He then took Ash United to their highest points total for a season when they reached 100 but it still wasn’t good enough to take the title and they finished runners-up to AFC Wallingford.

They however did regain the Aldershot Senior Cup beating 3 RSME Regiment and also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase before losing to Tow Law Town. There was more silverware for the club as the Reserves won the Division One Title. The 2004 to 2006 seasons saw ex Aldershot Town player Stuart Udal take

charge of the team. Great progress was made with Ash United finishing 3rd in the League. The Reserve team won the Reserve Premier Cup beating Sandhurst Town. After 18 years’ service as a player with Ash United Paul Bonner took over the manager’s position in the 2008-09 season with Mattie Everard ably assisting him. Although not winning silverware, Paul’s team produced some good entertaining football team. Paul resigned from his position at the end of the 2012-2013 campaign. Alan Reed was appointed Manager for the 2013/2014 season and after a disappointing season in 2013/2014, the club was relegated into Division 1 of the Combined Counties League. Alan Reed continued to be manager until the end of December 2014, when he was replaced by Daniel Bishop. The club finished mid table in the 2014/2015 Division 1 season. Bringing things right up-to-date, Ash United currently also have a fledgling ladies team, an U16’s, U10’s, U9’s 2 Men’s Sunday teams and our Saturday first and Reserve teams all playing under the Ash United FC banner.
