There is Beauty in the City: Bilbao has been a wonderful project, born of the collaboration bet-ween the on line art gallery PhotoArte Komite in Bilbao and There is Beauty in the City in theUnited Kingdom (thank you so much Glenn and Anna); a project which has managed that nearly200 people (including participants, collaborators and organizers) had been involved in this nonto profit project to perform a relational experience, a journey through the beauty of the city thathas led to the creation of a choral art work and, above all, of a very special map of the beautyof Bilbao, made up of 141 photographs of many other interventions, and 41 interviews collectedin video.More than 150 points of Bilbao which have been intervened by its citizens, reassessed to showthe immense beauty the city hoarded; all this, only armed with a magnet and a camera. Thus,we have had the chance to discover many other faces of Bilbao, some less well known, others,sadly, in the process of disappearing and which, thanks to the citizens of Bilbao, will no longerbe forgotten. An art work of incalculable value, as the contributions of the participants in theproject are priceless.

And also a big effort, the one made by the organization to carry out an exhibition that not onlywould reward the efforts of everyone participating in the project, but could be enjoyed by all thecitizens of Bilbao and all the people who came to Sala Rekalde, a great art gallery committedto contemporary art in the heart of the city. Thank you very much Alicia (managing director ofSala rekalde).The visits to the exhibition did nothing but increase the success of the project and its impactamong the citizens of Bilbao. A huge success also due to the private firm Onkai for the logisticsupport and the work of communication made by the department of culture of the city councilof Bilbao, who contributed so much to disseminate the project.

But the trip of There is beauty in the city: Bilbao did not end after the exhibition at Sala Rekalde.Such was the interest generated by the project that the organization decided to extend the jour-ney of There is Beauty in the City: Bilbao.In this new adventure, we had the invaluable help ofZiortza Etxabe, responsible of Eutokia, Oihane Korres, responsible of ZAWP, and Manu Gómezfrom hAcería. What is more, as a wonderful finale to the project, There is Beauty in the City: Bil-bao was exhibited at the Bilbao Museum of Art Reproductions, thanks to the invaluable colla-boration of Saioa Barrenetxea and Itziar Markija (the ones in charge of the Bilbao Museum ofArtistic Reproductions).

From the 17th July onwards, There is Beauty in the City: Bilbao left the city, the three photographsproduced to show the process of transformation in which the city is immersed were delivered toits only possible owners: Elena, Rodrigo, and Erika, who intervened these urban areas and sho-wed us the beauty they contained; and all the graphics, maps, pictures and other items thathave been part of the exhibition were removed.

However, this will not be the last journey of There is Beauty in the City: Bilbao. The video madeup with all the submitted photographs of the 141 interventions will continue surfing the Internetto the more distant places we could imagine. And most importantly, we sincerely hope thatThere is Beauty in the City: Bilbao had contributed to add many people from Bilbao to the list ofcollaborators in the overall project of There Beauty in the City, so that they continue finding, in-tervening, showing and spreading the beauty armed with a camera and a magnet.Farewell.

La galería de arte PhotoArte Komite puso en marcha durante la primavera de 2011 el proyectode arte colaborativo “There is beauty in the city” (una iniciativa sin ánimo de lucro creada enReino Unido por Anna Francis y un colectivo de artistas). Con la presentación del catálogo Dos-sier-Bilbao queremos documentar y mostrar el proceso de desarrollo de “There is beauty in thecity” en Bilbao.

“There is beauty in the city: Bilbao” ha sido posible gracias a la implicación del Departamentode Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, en especial gracias a Justo Ezenarro e Iñaki López deAguileta, que puso a disposición del proyecto los canales de comunicación del Ayto. de Bilbao.A Alicia Fernández, directora de la Sala Rekalde, que cedió la sala y los servicios del espacio ex-positivo. Y a Onkai. Estudios y Proyectos, cuyo aporte logístico fue fundamental para hacer frentea un proyecto que crecía día a día en expectación y participación.

Así se ha llevado a cabo este proyecto: utilizando financiación privada, con apoyo de recursospúblicos para organizar una actuación que aportara valor al proyecto común de nuestra ciudad.PhotoArte Komite actúa como espacio de dinamización cultural desde el que se gestan diversasactuaciones de impacto positivo en la comunidad; centrando nuestro ámbito de trabajo en pro-yectos en los que la creatividad, la participación abierta y el desarrollo en red son sus elementossignificativos.

El equipo de la galería PhotoArte Komite quiso traer a Bilbao este proyecto de “arte colaborativo”e impregnarlo de nuestra peculiar idiosincrasia. En la puesta en marcha del proyecto, nuestrosobjetivos se centraron en:

- primar la narración de la experiencia, por encima de objetivos estéticos. - poner en valor los espacios cotidianos por los que discurre nuestra vida. Cada fotografía visibiliza un pequeño rincón de la ciudad con el que el sujeto mantiene una relación emo-cional.- dar a conocer a nivel global una cartografía que nos permite realizar un originalísimomapa de belleza de la ciudad en el que son los propios ciudadanos los que muestran alresto de conciudadanos dónde hay belleza en la ciudad.-Documentar los cambios en el paisaje urbano de Bilbao, ya que la obra final se puedeentender como un trabajo de archivo que plasma la “belleza” actual de la ciudad.-Fomentar la participación ciudadana para la creación de obras comunales. Proponiendouna intervención en sus espacios cotidianos para que sean los propios sujetos que lo ha-bitan los que se conviertan en co-creadores de una construcción colectiva.-Desarrollar entre los ciudadanos de la villa una experiencia relacional a través de unaactuación colaborativa. -Contribuir al desarrollo de la fotografía como expresión artística.

El resultado ha sido inmejorable, más de 60.000 visitas en red en apenas tres meses; presenciaen radios, televisiones y prensa escrita, y un itinerario de exposiciones que comenzó en la SalaRekalde, pasó por Eutokia y ZAWP, para finalizar en el Museo de Reproducciones de Bilbao.

Gracias a todas y cada una de las personas que han hecho suyas las directrices estratégicasque han guiado el desempeño del proyecto y se han involucrado en su desarrollo. Gracias atod@s por vuestro indispensable apoyo, y hasta pronto.

Cuando las ciudades comienzan a crecer en altura, gracias al desarrollo de la tecnologíay a la utilización de acero y cristal, la mirada de los habitantes de las ciudades descubrenuevas perspectivas inéditas hasta el momento. Esta nueva forma de mirar modificatambién la geografía mental de los sujetos.En nuestras ciudades son los edificios los que se convierten en tótem organizador del es-pacio, y es la función que la Torre Iberdrola cumple en nuestra ciudad.Visible desde todos los ángulos posibles de la villa, hace que nuestra manera de organizarel espacio de la ciudad se modifique. radio El 16 de mayo el equipo de Onda Vasca radió una entre-vista a Susana Martínez Ximénez (parte del equipo deThere is beauty in the city: Bilbao). Además de Susana,Rodrigo Fuentealba (cuya foto-grafía del Edificio RAG repre-sentó la Transformación de laciudad en el estado de"Limbo") entró también en an-tena.

A Iker Arrastio y todo elequipo de Boulevard Biz-kaia queremos agradecer-les el seguimiento querealizaron a There is beautyin the city: Bilbao. Ya en elmes de abril, Boulevard Biz-kaia contactaba con nos-otros para informar sobre elinicio del proyecto. En elprograma del 18 de mayo,Iker contactó de nuevo con la organización de There is beauty( Iker desde la radio, nosotros desde la magnífica Sala Rekalde) para charlar sobre la inauguración del Mapa de la Belleza.
