A PERFECT MULTIPURPOSE CRANE SYSTEM: FOR CARGO HANDLING AND SHIP ASSEMBLY WORK.THE KONDOR:

THE EXPERIENCED CRANE.

The seaports of this world are the relaystations for the flows of goods which, in the age of global business operations, are continuing to grow rapidly. Shippingunits are becoming ever larger, turna-round times ever shorter and cargohandling operations ever greater. This is an enormous challenge for all thoseresponsible for the loading of goods, and for those who build the ships.

Cranes, as high-performance instru-ments, play a decisive role in this pro-cess. Cranes in dockyards and harboursmust always function correctly in all possible climatic zones and fulfil themost varied demands with regard tohandling capacity, geometry and groundpressure limits, etc.

Q INFO

What constitutes the best harbour and dockyard cranes?

What does it depend on?

Q Essentially, on:

– low operating costs

– high productivity rates

Q More precisely, on:

– efficient and safe handling of bulk goods, general cargo and containers

– precise, careful handling of materials and efficient assembly of

ship components in dockyards

– maximising the handling capacity and, consequently, short turnaround

times for the ships

– economical unloading and loading

– low costs for maintenance and operating materials

– long working life

The Kondor is a crane that has proved itself a thousand times.

It has all these features.

DOESN’T EVERY INVENTOR DREAM OF CREATING A NEW STANDARD?THE ARDELT DOUBLE JIB LEVEL

LUFFING PRINCIPLE.

As early as 1932, Ardelt had inventedthe double jib level luffing principle –and since then has implemented furtherdevelopments. The double jib systemcomprises four elements: A-frame, jibboom, tie-back and jib. The crucial pointabout this special geometry: it allows the desired horizontal load path to berealised by mechanical means withouthaving to expend energy through thehoisting gear. Characteristic of thisdesign is the downward-pointing jib: itdecisively shortens the length of thefree-swinging rope.

This means (above all, in comparison to single-jib cranes): the horizontal loadpath and the closeness of the jib to theload allow excellent productivity rates. Thanks to shorter free-swinging ropelengths, positioning becomes very simpleand precise, even in wind and bad weather conditions – a great advantagefor all types of operation.

In addition, the short free-swinginglengths make the articulated jib craneideal for semi-automatic operation, especially in the integrated bunker version.

Q INFO

Typical features of the Kondor

– extremely productive: short load paths, short rope

lengths and free-swinging lengths, improved centre of

gravity position: the double jib level luffing principle

– classic construction: block column and base-point bearing

– extremely low-maintenance: no special tools required

– very economical: recovery of braking energy

KONDOR

A further advantage of the Ardelt doublejib level luffing system: the jib cannotcrash to the ground, even in the event of failure of the luffing gear. It is heldabsolutely secure by the tie-back.

And: optimum guidance of the ropeminimises the bending load on the ropesand increases the working life of theropes – therefore reducing the operatingcosts.

The special double jib level luffing concept of the Kondor provides a coun-terweight balancing lever. The movablecounterweight ensures that, in everyposition, the centre of gravity of thewhole jib system remains close to theslewing axis. This minimises themoments of force acting on the slewingbearing and also reduces the luffingenergy required. In both cases, thismeans reduced wear and thereforelower costs.

Further characteristic features of the Kondor are the block column and thebase-point bearing. These ensure thatthe rotating part of the crane is sup-ported in the fixed part – which makesthe Kondor especially easy to transport. Also typical of the Kondor: maintenanceand repair work can be undertaken without the use of special tools. (And: allsteel structural parts and other compo-nents can be transported within theclearance gauge of the Russian railwaynetwork, since the Kondor was originallydeveloped for the Russian market.)

Moreover, the Kondor is an extremelyenergy-efficient crane. Its primary ener-gy consumption, already low, is furtherreduced by means of the latest convert -er technology. Through recovery of thebraking energy fed back into the powersupply system the Kondor exhibits asignificantly better energy balance thana comparable mobile harbour crane.

Precision work during general cargo handling

The Kondor is a classic in Ardelt’s pro-duct range. From the very beginning, we have constantly refined and improvedthis crane: together with its sister crane, the smaller Sokol, since 1950 we havedelivered it more than 1,600 times, to 4 continents – where it operates reliablyunder the most varied geographical and climatic conditions.

KONDOR

THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR CHOOSING THE KONDOR .THE MOST COMPELLING ARE:

01 THE JIB SY STEMDecades of experience pay off. Ardeltbuilds what is not only the most robust, but also the lightest double jib level luffing system in the world. The Kondoris manufactured in three size classes, each with specific characteristics relatedto the lifting capacity: Sokol 500,Kondor 1000, Grande Kondor 3000.

02 THE HOISTING GEARWe have optimised our hoisting gearthrough decades of development, so thatwe are able to guarantee highest perfor-mance and best availability. Equipped as standard with compact, high-perfor-mance planetary gears of modular construction. In this way we achieveweight and cost savings.

03 THE MACHINERY HOUSE LAYOUTThe compact, modular and low-main -tenance machinery house of the Kondoris designed on the principle of a rucksack. There is typically good access to all thecomponents. For the rope entry point in the machinery house roof: this is pro -vided with excellent protection againstrain or spray water by means of floatingguide rollers (with reliable sealing).

06 THE TRAVELLING GEARFor the Kondor travelling gear we use only tried and tested components fromwell-known suppliers, because we be -lieve that reliability is a cardinal virtue.Travelling gear from Ardelt characteristi-cally has an extremely robust construc -tion with one very special feature: the driving dogs between drive and driveshaft have involute toothing. This makesit possible to easily replace the driveunits. Ardelt travelling gear units aremodular in design and – as modules –can be combined on travelling gearrockers. In this way they can easily meetall the requirements that the infrastruc-ture of the respective installation sitedemands. Moreover: in comparison torubber-tyred travelling gear, rail mountedtravelling gear is much cheaper to pur-chase and maintain, because the highcost of tyres is eliminated.

04 THE LUFFING GEARThe Kondor luffing gear has proveditself a thousand times and is extremelysafe, easy to maintain and independentof climatic conditions. Depending on sizeclass, we install either single toothedrack luffing gear or double toothed rackluffing gear. This provides much loweroperating costs in comparison tohydraulic or spindle drive luffing gear.

05 THE SLEWING GEARFrom its use in thousands of cranes, the slewing gear fitted to the Kondor hasshown itself to be a compact and low-maintenance system. It consists of a driveunit with planetary gears. Special techni-cal features are a) the supporting ring forthe swivel roller rockers and b) the base-point bearing which supports the wholeblock column. Accessibility to all compo-nents of the slewing gear is guaranteed.

08 THE ELECTROCONTAINERWe only install first-class components in the modular-designed Kondor electro-container. We manufacture the controlcabinets, for example, in Eberswalde, install them completely, test them meti-culously and then deliver them as a com-pact unit together with the operator cab.

The benefits:– well-arranged structure thanks

to the modular design– high-quality components and

functional testing– low freight costs thanks to reduced

dimensions– less installation work during assembly.

09 THE OPERATOR CABINArdelt operator cabins are individuallymanufactured to specially developed, standardised designs. We design andbuild the cabs to order, or to suit the relevant on-site operating conditions.

10 THE PORTALSThe block column cranes stand onmade-to-measure star or crown portals, which – depending on customer require-ments – are available in all sizes of gantry gauge. We have already producedcranes with special hook heights of up to 60m with corresponding portalheights of up to 50m.

07 THE CONTROL SYSTEMArdelt is the only manufacturer of double jib level luffing cranes able torefer to an established and integratedknowledge chain: right from the electri-cal design stage through to program-ming and as far as manufacture andtesting. Something which – apart fromagreeable operation of the crane – alsogives the customer the satisfaction ofalways having state-of-the-art equip-ment. Whether this concerns the compo-nents or forward-looking functions suchas remote maintenance.

O Clear and ergonomically comfortable arrangement of operational elements in the driver’s cabin

O Portals from Ardelt are perfectly designed for unique requirements

O Visualisation of crane data via Crane Management System

O

Great engineering performances: “Queen Mary II” and Ardelt Cranes

The Kondor is at home in any locationwhere there are loads to be moved.

This is a very economical machine forhandling operations in ports and, amongother things, ideal for bulk cargo hand-ling. In the so-called “kangaroo operation”it achieves peak handling capacities. With this method, besides the short loadpaths and swing lengths arising from thedouble jib level luffing design principle, there is a second decisive benefit: thehandling operation is carried out essen-tially by the luffing movement. The slew -

ing movement therefore becomessecondary and the effects of brakingand acceleration processes which nor-mally occur during the trolley travelmovements of ship unloaders are elimi-nated. One of the reasons crane driverssimply love the Kondor.

It is highly regarded in the dockyards for the assembly of ship components. This is due to the short rope lengths, the short load swings and the ability to make very fine and precisely-control-led movements.
