SETTING: About one block south of Highway 38 bordered by the Umpqua River. This area is surrounded by mountains with largedouglas fir, maple, and oak trees.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS IF NECESSARY): The builder of this house was August E. Ozouf, apioneer tanner and teacher in Scottsburg. French by birth, Ozouf, who married a women named Isabelle Wade, had an adopted daughternamed Hazel. In about 1900, Ozouf moved his tannery to Gardiner.
This house was long the residence of Roscoe and Minnie Fryer. Roscoe Fryer, a logger, also operated a garage in Scottsburg. As ayoung man he worked in the Hedden Store.
John Fryer, another owner of the house and his brother Henry are great grandsons of Cyrus Hedden and great great grandsons of JohnJacob Sawyers, early settlers in the Umpqua River Valley.
